It’s a mystery that’s lasted for 50 years and lingers still: What happened on the summer night in 1969 when a car driven by Sen. Ted Kennedy plunged off the Dike Bridge into the waters off of Martha’s Vineyard, killing his 28-year-old passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne? On July 18, 1969, Kopechne, who had worked on Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 presidential bid, attended a reunion party with five of her fellow campaign workers, known as the “Boiler Room girls,” so named for their windowless office. The party, held at a rental cottage on the island of Chappaquiddick in Massachusetts

Esther "Lobster" Newberg, the literary super-agent and a former Boiler Room Girl, was one of the attendees at the beach party that night, and to this day I don't recall ever hearing a peep out of her about what transpired.

Anonymous sources again. Anonymous sources can say any damned thing they want, make up any story,..you can never question them! And I wonder why now remain anonymous at this late date with the Senator-murderer long dead? I have absolutely no feeling of credibility in this BS story. Ted was a cowardly, lying POS his whole life. The political consequences of this terrible tragedy were off the charts and so the BS cover-up had to carry-on to success or fail. Anyone with a lick of sense about reality knew full well the Senator's story was made-up by his lawyers. There was no reason at all for his actions that night except to hide his responsibility and a likely resulting manslaughter charge. The sycophantic media and the Kennedy clan all circled the wagons around the young Senator. We might have known full well what actually happened...but a lot of good it could do in that atmospehre of media lies and political cover-up.

This is too stupid to be true. If this had happened, Ted would have only looked better - He would have played it to the max. "I didn't know, blah, blah, blah.." Total nonsense.

No it's not. The POS Teddy drove off that bridge and left a girl to die while he tried to get someone to take the rap for him. What's a mystery is how he kept getting re-elected in spite of what he had done.

Jay Leno once called People Magazine the Bible of the illiterate.
I think we all know what happened. The most important fact is that Mary Jo did not drown. She ran out of air and slowly suffocated.

Why would anyone hide facts that would tend to make Kennedy look like an unwitting victim of bad luck, every Kennedy's favorite go-to excuse? If this were true, The Lyin' of the Senate would have shouted it from the rooftops.

Expect to hear that RFK Jr. was not piloting the plane that crashed killing him, his wife and sister in law. There are no limits of folks willing to write stories or be guest on talk shows defending the reputation of this rotten clan.

#15 - Thank You! I have been watching Drudge turning the corner into full-fledged TDS for a while. I am a Rush 24/7 'scriber and am about ready to send my very first terse note to Rush for having the Drudge Report front and center on his monitor. Yeah, there are fairly new stories (occasionally) on that page, but reduce the size of the window so I don't get physically ill while watching Rush's show.
Attila - happily, an LDotter since 1999.

The post-Chappaquiddick careers of the surviving "Boiler Room Girls," three went to law school, one became a literary agent, and one became a D.C. lobbyist. No one talked. Makes you wonder why......

it’s plausible but I can’t figure out why any
Of them, after realizing what had happened, would not tell. Why keep it a secret? If he didn't know she was in the back seat, that’s better than deliberately not rescuing her. Because he had gone for a drive with another woman? Why is that worse than allowing the story that he had gone for a drive with Mary jo? So I don’t believe it.

So we are to believe that two adults got into the front seat of a sedan, with and adult female sitting or laying on the back seat, and she wasn't noticed? To anyone who'd believe that...I've got a railroad for sale. I take PayPal.

If this were true, the Kennedy/Demo machine would have pushed it to the max (with slight modifications to protect the guilty). This is something some modern dudes came up with while sitting around drinking beer, playing "What if?",

Anybody placed in a rear seat without seat belt should land in the front seat upon impact. I guess when that happened, Ted didn't know what that Unidentified Flying Object was at the time.

Ms. Kopechne did not drown. She was trapped in an air pocket and suffocated while waiting hopefully for Teddy to rescue her. It must have eventually dawned on her that he had fled the scene. By the time she died, she realized that the dashing scion of the Kennedy dynasty was a POS.

This is no revelation or explanation, it's old news. That theory went around almost right from the start and was designed to make Ted look good. The name of the girl who rode in the front seat was also named at the time, and she didn't have to hide behind the pseudonym Betty.

Teddy was a coward that left a helpless woman in a car filled with water and ran away! Then he faked a neck brace for sympathy! I have tremendous respect for Jack and his brother Bobby...listen to their speeches...but Teddy was a sissy womanizing boorish dick!

FTA - "It was only that next morning, after the upside-down car had been spied in Poucha Pond by two fishermen, that Ted went to the local police station to report the accident"
Total hogwash - Teddy NEVER reported the accident and NEVER went to the police station. Police had to call HIM at his hotel (where he was busy drinking his breakfast).

This story has been around for a while. Nothing new here. Never in my life have I been driving a car and not know who was in it with me. Teddy's problem was once his handlers cooked up the narrative he had to stick with it no matter what. If he changed it he could have been prosecuted for perjury. No autopsy was performed on Mary Jo. The Kennedy Clan got a high Catholic Church official to tell her parents that an autopsy would be a mortal sin. An autopsy could have determined if she drowned, suffocated, or was pregnant.

In the end, Ted is responsible for the death of a young woman, not his wife, that he had in his car while driving drunk. Had this been anyone else, they would have been convicted of DUI, heavily fined and hopefully spent some time in prison. Seems to me that if you are a politician, mostly democrat, sometimes republican, you can get away with just about any CRIME.

I have heard this before. It is, shall we say, baseless. For one thing, Teddy would have checked out to make sure the backseat was clear before he headed out in the car with his "lady friend."
