The Washington National Cathedral disputed President Trump´s claim that he had to "approve" the funeral of the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). "Washington National Cathedral was honored to host the funeral service for Senator John McCain. All funerals and memorial services at the Cathedral are organized by the family of the deceased; only a state funeral for a former president involves consultation with government officials," a cathedral spokesperson said in a statement to The Hill on Thursday. "No funeral at the Cathedral requires the approval of the president or any other government official," he added.

Oh good, there´s a Democrat working at the Cathedral. I´m guessing Pres. Trump was speaking about the larger logistics.

Nobody listens! He didn´t say anything about approval. He offered Air Force Two for their needs. And that he had no intention of attending the funeral. (The Rotunda area has its own Staff, so ask them who signs off on funeral requests.) We are midway through Year Three of the media´s Presidential Excoriation.
Trump is not some hypocrite Democrat!

sorry for the double post but, The federal government paid for Air Force II which transported the remains from AZ to DC as well as the military flyover, both needed to be approved by Trump. That’s what Trump
Was referring to, not the funeral at the cathedral itself.

Trump´s approval had nothing to do with the location.
McCain campaigned on repealing and replacing Obamacare. He lied and voted with the opposition in a lame attempt to hurt Trump. All he managed to do was prove what a vindictive and vain politician he had become and in the process threw everyone who voted for him under the bus.

Trump had to give approval to transport McCain´s body on an airforce jet, etc. I don´t think he ever said he had to approve the Cathedral funeral.

I concur that Senator McCain was the worst GOP member of the upper chamber in my memory. I do wish the President would leave that tar-baby alone, though - minimal upside potential. The choir already knows the tune.
Sorry to hear about your stint in the joint but glad to hear that you apparently made it out.
Best wishes.

Thanks to #4. It was the many amenities provided for the McCain family that the President authorized NOT the use of that “church.” Yes, I use the term “church” cautiously when describing what the National Cathedral has become!

The National Cathedral is uninformed, and presumptuous. Trump gave approval and assistance for transport, military attendances, and I suspect a lot of other matters. Why the snark? Try being nice and appreciative of other people, and it will get you a lot farther in life.

Trump also gave approval for various honors that a Senator is usually not entitled to. The flag at half mast is not an honor given to a POW, or a Senator. This is typical fake news. Start with a falsehood and keep harping it. The National Cathedral was never even a question.

The "cathedral spokesperson" is once again lying with the literal truth.
"No funeral at the Cathedral requires the approval of the president or any other government official." That´s undoubtedly true. But, McCain wasn´t some guy in a pine box with no mourners happy to just have words said over him.
What the spokesperson ignores, and which makes the literal truth a lie as presented in this story, is that the trappings of McCain´s funeral certainly needed approval by the President of someone of great authority acting on his behalf. Trump apparently did nothing to interfere or detract by withholding "approval" for any government participation.
I hope this doesn´t start some sort of silly Twitter war with a church...

McCain´s funeral was a state funeral -- of the type only afforded to dead presidents and dead Kennedys. The logistics of such an endeavor go far beyond wheteher the church was available. This is what passes for journalistic "fact-checking" (oximoron alert) these days?

Yep, how like democrats to twist the truth around. It wasn´t the service you numpties, it was the logistics and extras like security that were provided by the government that Trump had to approve. But never waste a chance to lie when the truth would serve much better.
That overblown circus may as well have been a state funeral, for the media sure treated it as such. So did McCain when he planned it.

As many have already noted, this pompous, presumptuous representative of the pompous, very Liberal, so-called “National Cathedral” is quite wrong. It was not their holding the service, but all the other “state funeral” accoutrements that surrounded it. The funeral was a funeral. Wellstone-ish, but a funeral. Could have been anywhere.
That said, if that wasn’t “organized” like a state funeral for a former president, you could have fooled me...

The National Cathedral is not a Roman Catholic Church, it is an Episcopal Church.
Clearly President Trump was not talking about the religious aspects of the funeral that took place inside the Cathedral, but was talking about all the US Government provided aspects of transporting McCain’s body to and from Washington, DC and the like for about a week.
So this article amounts to another misrepresentation of Trump’s rhetorical intent when he made a off the cuff comment relating to McCain and his family in response to a question from the media.

The National Cathedral isn’t Catholic.
The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington, commonly known as Washington National Cathedral, is an American cathedral of the Episcopal Church.

It should never have been called the “National Cathedral”. We don’t have a state religion or a national religion. All that did was made their heads swell...

And one more thing. I want my coffin to be of the purish gold, and I want my image engraved on it in the dresh whites of a Flag Admiral, and you should embalm me with the besh Giza cotton [like Mike Lindell uses], and I want my coffin resting on top of Lincoln´s catafalque. Because I want people to get it. thash why. And I want lots of missing man formations, where the jet peels off. And after that you should bury at Annapolis like John Paul Jones, but in a shrine. So that no man could, you know, urinate on me without being shot to peeshes. And I want a national holiday. I think I deserve a national holiday, and not in August, more like the day after Thanksgiving. And if there is a god, I want to sit at his right hand. Jush kidding my friend.

McCain was a mess and he left a mess in his wake. I´m glad he´s gone. He´s going to be dead for a long time. Let him stay dead.
President Trump was generous and gracious to the McCain´s during their week long and extravagant funeral for their husband and father. And the McCain´s I have read did not have the grace to thank the president.
It shows you what kind of people they are.

Someone should explain the Commandment that goes like this “ thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor”. Who ever is trying to convince people that PRESIDENT Trump is lying is bearing false witness by not telling the whole truth here. The family had the funeral said in the cathedral because THEY made arrangements with the priests there. PRESIDENT Trump had no say in that part of the funeral service. Who ever that spokesperson is had better hit the confessional. He lied.

McPain screwed AZ over so many times that I have lost count, but it started with the lie when he first ran for congress. There was never any mention of his first marriage and divorce, only about his POW status. He sure got the mileage out of that.
Even when he learned of his brain tumor, he refused to step down because he wanted all the pomp and circumstance he knew he would get as a sitting senator. He was vain until the end!

Please remember that "National Cathedral" is a nick-name, not a designation -- like "First Baptist Church", or "Sacred Heart Catholic Church".
In fact, it´s official name is "The Episcopal Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul".
And, clearly, it is in the nutcase lie-beral fringe of the Episcopalian Church. Sadly, it seems like every denomination is getting that nutcase lie-beral fringe group controlling part of it...

It is a real estate property wholly owned by the Episcopal Church. They should change the name to ''American Cathedral of the Episcopal Church'' if they wanted to be disambiguous. But I think the diocese enjoys being thought of as the ''national'' cathedral. However, it isn't like it was a real church, with a regular congregation, meeting regularly in real worship. Or is it just a show place?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a die-hard MAGA hat wearing Trump supporter but I was tagged in this by a very liberal family member and wanted to see what y’all thoughts were. I suspect that Trump wasn’t talking about the funeral service itself but rather what the government provided for it.
