Christopher Cline, the billionaire coal tycoon best known for reviving Illinois’s mining industry and making a fortune doing it, died in a helicopter crash Thursday.
Cline died in an accident off the Bahamas along with his daughter, Kameron Cline, and five others, Brian Glasser, an attorney who represented Cline, said by telephone. He was the founder of St. Louis, Missouri-based coal miner Foresight Energy LP, a joint venture with Robert Murray’s Murray Energy Corp.

The body of murdered University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck was recovered 80 miles north of Salt Lake City, police said in a news conference Friday.
Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said the remains of the 22-year-old college student were recovered Wednesday in Logan Canyon.
“In the wake of this tragic, tragic incident, I am relieved and grief-stricken to report that we have recovered Mackenzie Lueck,” Brown said.
The announcement comes a week after 31-year-old Ayolla Ajayi was arrested in her killing.

South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg responded forcefully to a racist question that was posed to him Thursday during a July 4th campaign event in Iowa.

The notion of history repeating itself is usually viewed as a negative statement, but some history is worth repeating because we might learn and be guided by it.
In last week’s 5-4 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court rejecting the Trump administration’s claim that adding a question about whether a person is a U.S. citizen was for the purpose of helping to enforce the Voting Rights Act, Chief Justice John Roberts left the door open for the administration to come up with a more compelling reason. Whether this can be done in time for the 2020 Census is doubtful without an extension for document printing.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, running for president once again, told a gathering in Iowa Thursday that ever since the nation's founding, presidents and patriots have marked the Fourth of July by reflecting on the "greater meaning" of "this American experiment."
Biden quoted a few of America's most famous presidents, praising their pursuit of "liberty," then he turned to the current occupant of the White House:
You know, what I wonder -- what will Donald Trump say this evening? I mean, I'm being sincere. When he speaks to the nation at an event designed more to stroke his ego than celebrate American ideals.
National Public Radio (NPR) turned to Never Trump pundit Jonah Goldberg on Friday morning to explain the implications of the decision this week by Rep. Justin Amash to leave the Republican Party.
Goldberg told Morning Edition‘s Steve Inskeep that Amash’s departure was “a sign of many of the symptoms he’s talking about,” including the increased partisanship of American politics — which, Goldberg argued, was ironically a result of the weakening of the traditional parties in the face of challenges by outsiders like Donald Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
Amash, he said, reacting to the report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, which did not fit into the GOP’s partisan paradigm.
Job creation reignited in June, with nonfarm payrolls rising 224,000 and unemployment ticking up to 3.7 percent.
The June number will be closely watched after a surprisingly poor showing in May, when the U.S. economy was initially reported to have added just 75,000 jobs. That number was revised even lower on Friday, to just 72,000. April’s number was revised down to 216,000 from 224,000.
Economists surveyed by Econoday had been looking for a gain of 165,000 for June and for unemployment to remain steady at 3.6 percent.
The June number will also be looked to as a barometer for the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy. Last month,

More than a dozen people have been injured after Chicago police say a fight at the annual fireworks show caused panic at Navy Pier.
Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says three people were stabbed during the fight that followed the Fourth of July display, which draws thousands of people to the Lake Michigan shoreline each year. Guglielmi says 16 others were taken to hospitals after being trampled during the rush of people fleeing the scene.
The spokesman adds that initial reports of a shooting were inaccurate. It's unclear if anyone has been arrested.

It was excellent. Even CNN, in a report to which Jim Acosta contributed, couldn’t find fault with anything Trump said, although it took the obligatory shots at the event itself. CNN acknowledged that Trump’s speech was not political, but rather “a message of national pride.”
Unfortunately, the matter of national pride has become political. But there was nothing in the speech that anyone would have found objectionable before left-liberals rejected the notion of pride in America.
