Why One-Third Of Biologists Now Question Darwinism

Original Article

Posted By: Pluperfect, 4/17/2019 6:20:08 AM

While Christians have long challenged Charles Darwin’s theory of undirected evolution, few appreciate the true extent of the challenge beyond the church. Current estimates are that approximately one-third of professional academic biologists who do not believe in intelligent design find Darwin’s theory is inadequate to describe all of the complexity in biology. Ben Stein documented a crackdown within the academy on criticism of Darwin in his 2008 documentary “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.” While this might explain why the public rarely hears of challenges to Neo-Darwinism, the documentary centered on intelligent design. But the growing discontent in academia is from secular naturalists.

If attributed to pure chance, there is absolutely no provable reason the world evolved the way it did, or even evolved at all. Personally, I believe in Divine creation.

I don´t see why God´s plan cannot include evolution of species. My belief is that He knew exactly what He was doing.

Now - I´m not a paleobiologist- I only pretend to be one.

But, it seems to me, after reading and re-reading Darwin´s work that evolution does have some merit. It is not just a foundation to start explanations of diversity, it is really the only foundation for the science of studying complex life on this planet and probably others. As a dedicated and well-rooted Diest, I have absolutely no problem fitting Darwinism in with "Intelligent Design" (I put separation marks around ID because it is with qualification by my belief system, which I won´t go into here- you should thank me.).

First- we are here- reality is Proof One.

And secondly, to simply say, “No observed phenomenon has ever proven Evolution." Is rather wrong. In modern times we have had the scientific observation of mutation and natural selection at work (The red v gray squirrel study is one) and observations on isolated populations of birds and insects on remote islands such as Hawaii, Easter Island, the Galapagos and the more modern observaqtions of the “peppered moth” is yet another. Australia´s unique populations of marsupials which have filled nearly every niche in nature that non-marsupials have are yet another. To deny these observations is entirely dishonest and self-promotional in my way of thinking.

So- in my estimation, this ´Anti-Darwinian" and ´And Anti-Intelligent Design´ screed is just another attempt by out-of-work rogue biologists to sell books. If you dig a little further into them, you may find they are mostly Global Warming-ists, too. To me they sound nearly the same with their smug criticism of existing theorists and keen urges to push their unproven theories into conventional wisdom. If their ideas were so solid, they would not need to push them. They would be accepted on merit.

For those who are determined to deny a God, there will never be adequate proof. But I write this to those who claim to believe the Bible. God clearly stated the facts of creation and I remind you that when God repeats Himself, it is wise to listen closely.

To address the future challenge to his creation happening in 6 days He put some very plain and repetitive words in his first chapter.
"So the evening and the morning were the first day."
"So the evening and the morning were the second day"
"So the evening and the morning were the third day."
"So the evening and the morning were the fourth day."
"So the evening and the morning were the fifth day."
"So the evening and the morning were the sixth day."
The word for day is the same as the word for day in the ten commandments regarding rest on the seventh day of the week. A million years does not have a morning and a evening.

He also repeated Himself for clarity on the future challenge regarding evolution of all creatures by specifying how they would reproduce...."after their kind":
God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind.
Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind
And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creeps upon the earth after his kind.

Well stated No. 4. I’ll add that I do not believe in ID. All it takes is for a small modification in the DNA helix to create a variation. And over billions of years, we are here. We had dinosaurs for over 100 million years. Then came the asteroid and mammals took over, of which are the primates. We happened to be smarter and could talk in language. Who knows what comes next. Think about it. If that asteroid hadn’t struck the earth, there might still be dinosaurs and jungles to feed them.

Regardless of someone’s religious beliefs, Darwinism has no scientific underpinnings. Darwin himself knew nothing of DNA or cell structure and wasn’t even a biologist, yet people blindly take his hypotheses (which included a belief that disuse could affect inherited traits)
as fact. The fossil record still does not support evolved species despite over 100 years of searching. And no one has explained how life evolved from rocks.

Yes, #8, I highly recommend Schroeder´s books. Even understanding what a "day" means in terms of the time compression after the big bang is a big plus in his book The Science of God.

As a reminder, Darwin was a Christian. We need to understand his work, Origin of Species, was focused on the speciation of life on Earth, not the origin of life itself. I could be wrong because I haven´t read all of his works, but I don´t think he wanted to go there. Anyway, good to see science is unsettled in this matter.

I tried to "LIKE" #6, but I don´t think it updated to a higher LIKE number. Anyway, we either believe God or we don´t. He COULD have done it in millions of years, but He TOLD us He did it in a week. I know the verse that says a thousand years is like a day to God, but it doesn´t say God doesn´t know what a day is! The verse in 2 Peter is saying that the Lord isn´t "slack" or slow in His promises, but He is being patient with us. Taking verses out of context just twists Scriptures and is condemned, 2 Peter 3: 16.

3, I agree and also recommend "The Science of God" by Gerald L Schroder, PhD in physics and astrophysics. I have no problem with YOM (day in Hebrew) when it´s used in the context of speaker-hearer in ancient Near East language. I also have no problem with 24 hour day in Exodus 20:11 and roughly 13.6 billion years for six days when speaker and listener in context are outside of the creation; outside of the universe in Genesis 1. The math and physics demonstrate both are true wrt location. My faith in Christ and my belief in the inerrancy of the original text and the three ways the Bible says God reveals Himself (creation, Holy Spirit and Word) have no conflict for me either.

And, science and thermodynamics also demonstrates intelligent design in biology, in the universal constants (especially the precision of the cosmological constant) and abiogenesis. Simple probability math and entropy proves the impossibility of randomness becoming precisely ordered and precisely complex. This "God is in the gaps" arrogance is pretty silly when one realizes the "gap" is ten to several hundreds power larger than what science even knows and has the time to find out.

Thanks for the recommended references and links. I have long thought that the real dispute is over creation, not evolution. Evolution is a theory of change, but it cannot explain how life came to be. It would wonderful to see more respect from the Darwinists for those who recognize the limitations in this otherwise useful theory. Glad to see there is growing skepticism from within the community of biologists.

I have my beliefs but that is what they are, what I choose to believe.

On the other hand, ALL the theories are either unproven or have serious flaws, which the article is about. The biggest problem we face is that science has become closed minded and self protective instead of seeking truth through inquisitiveness. I believe if the truth was somehow found, that "science" would attempt to destroy it.

It is not a fault that science may have no answer now, or possibly never. All scientists can do is continue the search.

I was disappointed in the article in that it fails to say exactly WHAT ESS brings to the table. I understand it´s a work in progress but they should be able to highlight a few key concepts they think are the key.

Modern sequencing of entire genomes leaves no doubt of descent by natural selection of DNA changes. This is the central idea of modern biology. Scientists argue about peripheral issues but not about the central core of Darwinism.

Evolution by ´survival of the fittest" happens. My cancer cells are a perfect example. Every time I get a new therapy, the cells which have mutated a resistance survive and multiply. I´ve got evolution happening right within my body - kind of interesting to watch.

The chief argument against intelligent design is it doesn´t seem to have been very intelligent. God really could have come up with something better than He did.

...IF you believe in Darwinism then you must believe that one day some cells spontaneously sprouted themselves alive in the ocean...and then a couple eventually spontaneously got together and made themselves into fish...some became sharks...some became halibuts...and some became plants...

...then one day some of those halibuts spontaneously sprouted lungs!...and legs ! ...and walked out of the ocean! ...some became rabbits...some became dinosaurs...and some became plants...

...and eventually one of those halibuts who walked out of the ocean eventually - through a long chain of spontaneous events - evolved into Charlize Theron !! .....yeah...WHO can argue with that line of thinking...??...s/

As the article makes clear, if you say that you support the "Theory of Evolution," it is a fair question to ask, "which one?"

Darwin observed mutations within different species (a real thing) and postulated that this process could also explain how new species could be created (evolve). Based on the limited knowledge at the time, it was a pretty good SWAG (Scientific Wild-Ass Guess).

As more knowledge accrued, Darwin´s theory came unraveled. So changes were made to try to explain the new observations.

The most profound unanswered question is, "Why has evolution stopped?" "Why are we not seeing new species evolve?"

The only evolution observed to date is to Darwinism itself.

God did not "evolve" creation. Throughout the Bible, God is only shown to create complete AND perfect each and every time. God created the heavens and the earth, instantly, and perfectly in Genesis 1:1. It was that original creation, which Satan and the "fallen" Angels destroyed, with that evidence observed throughout the universe today. Their destructiveness required God to restore the Earth (only), per the 7 literal, 24 hour days of "restoration" starting in Genesis 1:2. This is known as the "gap theory" of Biblical creation, as a gap of time of unknown duration exists between original creation and the restoration. There is also a gap of time from the creation of Adam to when he and Eve were kicked out of the Garden. This is why the proposal of 6,000 year old Earth is absurd and flat-out ludicrous. The universe is billions of years old, and there is no conflict between true science and Scripture.

All animals AND plants were created perfect and complete after the restoration. Adam was created perfect, and without sin at that time, and the woman (not called "Eve" until after the Fall of Adam) was created likewise OUT of his body. After sin entered the world, we began to have disease and some animals became carnivores.

Scientists should be spending their time trying to understand WHAT it is that God wants us to learn from His once perfect Creation, rather than where it came from, since we know that answer. There are secrets within Creation that can help us. For example look at all the medical cures that come from plants and animals.

The article mentions Stephen Meyer who wrote "Darwin´s Doubt..." which lays out the case for design and thoroughly debunks evolution as proposed by Darwin and the 6 or 7 versions of Neo-Darwinist thought (including DNA, mutations, etc etc).

He doesn´t make the argument for God (or aliens) but just points out that the fossil evidence supports design over evolution.

The problem for scientists is two fold: Design makes more sense but doesn´t refute religion. And evolution is supported by the fossil record with what we know about how life changes and what life involves. The former is enough to scare the secular bunch toward an unsupportable theory.

1. I am a believer and as a biologist I have seen and read a lot of the arguments here, but no matter your views, there is still a misunderstanding of Darwin´s theory. He did not say life was due to spontaneous generation. He postulated an explanation of speciation, not genesis.

2. As some have mentioned, the theory of evolution relies on mutations in the genetic code to produce variants of a species. But to continue the variant requires that it gives these creatures an advantage to reproduce and carry on the trait. If not, it goes into the dustbin of history.

3. The problem the article and Schroeder highlight is that given that cells have a self-correction mechanism, or if that doesn´t work, the mutant will die off rendering the mutation gone, it will take a huge amount of time to randomly have a trait to provide a reproductive advantage. Schroeder even calculates the odds of this happening and and it´s so miniscule as to be ridiculous. Again, I think the article address this problem.

4. I would only add that I ultimately worry less about the mechanics and focus on the wonders of His creation.

It shouldn´t matter if a scientist is a proponent of intelligent design or an atheist. All research and work on this subject should be considered. As Ben Stein demonstrated in Expelled, if an academic believes in intelligent design, he is blackballed, regardless of the merit of his research.

To me, everything in the universe is God´s creation. I don´t believe there is one man on this earth, no matter his level of high intelligence that can conceive of any idea put forward by God Himself. The timing of His plans cannot be reconstructed, whether it´s the creation of dinosaurs or fleas. I also believe the ever searching for answers to God´s creations is quite amusing to Him.

Sorry to post again but #21 is talking about micro-evolution, which is evolution or change within a species, such as becoming resistant to certain antibiotics. What has never been observed is macro-evolution--the evolution of new species. That is where Darwinism falls apart. His seminal work was Origin of Species, an interesting hypothesis that remains unsupported by the fossil record or other evidence.

Mostly, I´m with #2. I think God created most of the world´s plants, animals, insects, fish, birds, reptiles, bacteria, and other living organisms through evolution (or something akin to it) over eons of time. The world wasn´t created in six 24-hour periods, but over six creative periods, each of which may have lasted millions of years.

Moses, the author of Genesis, wrote of the creation in terms ancient man could comprehend; that is, reducing creative epochs of "days," not to equate creation to 24-hour periods, but to express six distinct stages of creation.

Finally, I think God created Adam and Eve through some means other than evolution. Homo sapiens has been around for much longer than five or six thousand years. The descendants of Adam and Eve may well have interbred with other homo sapiens of closely-related hominids over the years as well. It is obvious that the antiquarian hominids did not survive as they were for the last thousands of years, though some of their DNA may be found among homo sapiens today.

I´m still learning.

Interesting article and thread. Am reluctant to tell anyone that I have problems with evolution. Ever since the Scopes Monkey Trial anyone who has the temerity to question is ridiculed as an ignorant boob who just fell off a turnip truck who probably believes the Earth is flat and there is a pot of gold with a leprechaun sitting on it at the end of each rainbow. Basically it comes down to do you believe in creation or an unguided random emergence of the universe. My favorite astronomer and cosmologist, Fred Hoyle who coined the term The Big Bang because he didn´t believe in it, said the chances that life developed randomly on Earth were roughly equivalent to a tornado going through a junkyard and assembling a fully functioning Boeing 747. You can put a blank canvas in front of a group of monkey and let them throw paint at it and you´ll never get the Mona Lisa or even Nancy Pelosi. Frankly, I just don´t know.

I never bought into Darwinism. Yes, things mutate but how much of that is because of where they live or human input. If you watch enough nature programming on Smithsonian and other channels, you´ll realize lots of facts have been hidden or destroyed. My favorite example is there were giants among us. Bones were found everywhere and most shipped to the Smithsonian. They all ´disappeared´ - some say to a barge sent to the middle of the ocean and dumped. However, some bones survived and we have some here in OK. When my older son started college, he majored in Physics. He said on one trip he took with a group, they all discussed whether they would ´adapt´ their findings if it meant more government money. They all said yes. My son changed majors.

President Trump granted a pardon to Michael Flynn, his former national-security adviser, today. Flynn had pled guilty to lying to FBI agents about conversations, during the 2016 transition, with the Russian ambassador about sanctions. Flynn’s pardon should bring to an end one gross violation of the Constitution’s separation of powers, even as it gives rise to groundless accusations of another. Although Flynn had pled guilty, the circumstances of the case had raised serious concerns about whether the government had proceeded properly. The FBI, for example, questioned Flynn even though it did not appear he had violated any law. In May, Attorney General William Barr ordered the case dropped.

And here’s some inside scoop on my new book Crisis, which at this moment is #31 out of all books on Amazon, so I’m outselling Fifty Shades of Grey. I’m not sure how to feel. Kurt Contracts COVID And Antics Ensue I’m fine. Irina’s fine, though she had it worse than me. How would I describe it? Well, like a middling head cold. I felt sniffley and was coughing one day, so I called a doctor client and got a 30-minute test.

Are furbished product is seldom as desirable as a brand-new one. Joe Biden must be assuming Americans can’t tell the difference. Even as President Trump battles uphill to overturn the results of the recent presidential election, faces familiar during the earlier Age of Obama are reappearing in President-elect-apparent Biden’s pantheon of power. The looming Biden era promises to be Obama 3.0 — Hillary Clinton in 2016 was to be Obama 2.0, but new models don’t always live up to the original (see Windows Vista). Jen Psaki, communications director for the Obama White House and now filling a similar role during the nomination process, describes the emerging Biden brand:

As we reported two days ago, Joe Biden completely made no sense when he was trying to explain the Wuhan coronavirus relief bill. It was really bad and it explains why they’re afraid to have him deliver an address to Congress or do any kind of a real solo press conference, because at this point they have to be afraid this is all going to fall apart if he does anything live and this all becomes too obvious to the American people. But there’s only so long that they can hold this off. And it’s getting worse, as video today revealed. Biden was holding an event to announce the nomination

Democrat Senator Joe Manchin (WV) appears to have started to shift his views on the filibuster with remarks that he made on two news shows on Sunday morning. The shift from Manchin comes after he has repeatedly stated that he would not vote to end the filibuster, despite pressure from the far-Left. During the interviews on Sunday, Manchin repeatedly claimed that he was not open to ending the filibuster because he did not want to strip the minority party of their power in the Senate, but signaled that he was open to changing it.Fox News host Chris Wallace asked Manchin if he would consider “reforming the filibuster” if “Republicans

In an open letter released Sunday, Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden urged him to “honor his commitment” and include the Hyde Amendment in Democrats’ $1.9 trillion COVID-19 spending package, writing “we feel used and betrayed.” The letter states: We are very disappointed about the COVID-19 relief package’s exclusion of the Hyde Amendment, a longstanding bipartisan policy that prevents taxpayer funding for abortion. [snip] As pro-life leaders in the evangelical community, we publicly supported President Biden’s candidacy with the understanding that there would be engagement [with] us on the issue of abortion and particularly the Hyde Amendment

If you had any doubts that Meghan Markle is a manipulative piece of work, her bombshell Oprah interview Sunday night dumping on the British monarchy would set you straight. Prince Harry’s American wife accused his family of hateful racism against her baby, claimed they refused to protect her and drove her to the point of suicide. She made the incendiary and implausible charge that when she was pregnant with Archie, the royal family decreed that her unborn son would be denied the title of “prince” because her mixed race meant he might have dark skin.

Nancy Pelosi’s top priority is to turn America into a one-party nation ruled by Democrats. Her bill HR 1 trashes the U.S. Constitution in an attempt to rig the system and make it virtually impossible to elect a Republican president or Congress again. It’s a power grab. The bill eviscerates state voting laws and forces all the states to conform to a set of rules that includes automatic voter registration. Anyone who goes to a DMV or applies for food stamps, Medicaid or other social services, or attends a public college will be automatically enrolled to vote. Noncitizens are obligated to identify themselves and opt out,

The Royal Family was left reeling this morning after Meghan Markle tearfully revealed that the stress of royal life made her suicidal when she was five months pregnant, claimed Archie was denied the title of prince because he is mixed-race and said Kate Middleton made her cry before she married Harry in a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. The couple also chose to reveal that they are having a baby girl to the tens of millions of people watching the CBS show broadcast in the US before accusing the Royal Family of racism and revealing the deep rift 'Megxit' has caused with Prince Charles and Prince William.

I’m probably second to none in my dislike for Meghan Markle. There’s something unattractive about a mature woman marrying into the British Royal family with one of the world’s most expensive weddings, hanging out with the Queen, living in insane luxury…and then whining non-stop about the horror of her life. There’s something even less appealing when that woman accuses the Royal family of race hatred. And the problem is that, when it comes to that left-wing diva, Meghan Markle, it’s hard to believe most of what she says. After weeks of hype, CBS finally televised Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah.

Without question, the vast majority of Americans who support former President Donald Trump were angry and frustrated throughout 2020 passed with barely a mention of then-U.S. Attorney John Durham’s criminal investigation into the FBI’s fraudulent “Russiagate” counterterrorism operation directed at his 2016 campaign. In the weeks before the November election, word got out that then-Attorney General William Barr wasn’t going to announce any indictments or even a report on Durham’s investigation because he did not want to influence the outcome. So far, in fact, the only indictment to come out of the Durham probe is that of former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith, who essentially got a slap on the wrist

Rep. Steve Cohen vowed to renew the push to remove former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover’s name from the bureau’s downtown Washington headquarters, according to an interview released Monday. Appearing on Yahoo! News’ Skullduggery podcast, the Tennessee Democrat said the effort is getting a fresh look after the release of a new movie highlighting the FBI’s secret program to discredit civil rights activists. The Washington Times in 2019 first reported Democrats’ bid to strip the longtime FBI director’s name from the bureau’s headquarters. Mr. Cohen said the impetus to revive the bid is the new movie, “Judas and the Black Messiah.” The movie details

“There must have been a moment, at the beginning, when we could have said –-no. But somehow we missed it.” Tom Stoppard The millions of Americans who were paying attention throughout the 2020 election campaign all became painfully aware of the fact that Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities were slipping and slipping fast. His wife, as the person closest to him, should have been the one to call the campaign quits in order to reduce stress on the man. Instead, apparently so anxious to become the First Lady by any means necessary, Mrs. Biden continued to push her failing husband’s campaign forward as if he were mentally qualified.
