April 15th, 2019 marks the 107th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. More than a century later, why does this story still captivate so many people’s imaginations? Maybe it’s because, in the words of James Cameron, director of the 1997 Titanic film, “It was like a great novel that really happened.” But as a near-lifelong Titanic aficionado, I have an alternative theory: the sinking of the Titanic was a “lifeboat ethics” scenario involving actual lifeboats. Looking back on the disaster allows people to ask themselves,

Lot´s of theories down though the years. My Grandmother felt God sank the ship because it was full of heathens who had turned their back on God. Sort of like when Samson collapsed the Temple of the Philistines. One of the latest explanations was there was a serious fire in one of the coal bunkers which weaken the structure of the ship. The White Star line was under considerable pressure to make the maiden voyage a financial and propaganda success. There have been lots of plane crashes caused by the pressure put on the pilots to stick to schedule. And the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up because NASA had a schedule to keep.

Read "The Watch That Ends the Night: Voices from the Titanic" for a first rate view of the voyage and sinking of the Titanic. Allan Wolf´s story of the ship and its passengers is told in multiple perspectives and free-verse. Wolf´s research is meticulous. It´s haunting, because we meet the passengers he´s chosen, already knowing what they don´t know. The empathy we feel for the characters is incredible ~ young men who send and decipher Morse code, the musicians who will play on deck while the ship is chaotically sinking, a little boy in search of dragons. I had goosebumps. I was reading at a gallop to find out their fates, tho I wanted to slow down to stay with these characters!

Well, I want to keep the Mexicans, Guatemalans and Hondurans from swamping our lifeboat.

I just watched a great documentary called Titanic: the Aftermath on Amazon Prime streaming. You would be very surprised to learn how many procedures were created at that time to handle mass disasters that are still in use today.
Like the Bramstead procedure. That fellow was responsible for the ID and the personal effects of all the dead. So he came up with the numbering system and the data list that stayed with every body through their entire stint with the authorities. The same procedure was used in the 9/11 tragedy as well.
Plus the coast guard has also instituted procedures and equipment to deal with mass caualties at sea as well. The White Star line was still going to send another ship out after the sinking with not enough lifeboats. The crew on the new ship found out and totally mutinied.
The White Star line front office had to be dragged kicking and screaming into dealing with the aftermath. They also refused to give any of the grieving relatives in Europe free passage to come ID their relative´s body.
I hope that with this disaster yesterday, we can put aside some of our differences and come together. Even if we have to force the EU to admit what we already know about the invaders. Our own Founders no doubt toured this cathedral on their own Grand Tour as young men.

In a book published shortly after the tragedy it was stated that the lifeboat capacity was determined by filling lifeboats with full grown men in 10 foot swells and finding out how many it could accommodate without swamping. In the glass smooth water the night of the disaster and considering the lower weights of women and children the lifeboats would have been able to hold everyone without swamping. The lifeboats were filled with "women and children first" and launched when they reached the stated numerical capacity (possibly between 25 and 50% of the actual capacity in smooth water). Additionally, in the panic, many of the lifeboats were launched partially full.
Of course the thinking of the steamship company was that their ship would never sink and in the opinion of the industry,if any ship did sink, it would sink so slowly that the lifeboats would be used to ferry passengers and crew to another ship.

There were many fine examples of gentlemen, such as multi-Millionaire John Jacob Astor, who accepted their fate (death at sea) in order to allow women and children to be saved. Rarely is such chivalry witnessed in the world these days.

#9, no difference between men and women, don´t ya know.
And how many guys suddenly would discover they identified as a woman if they were today in the same situation?
Things were better in some ways then.
