Inherent Right to Life for … Wild Rice?

Minnesota Democrats are advancing legislation that would recognize an “inherent right” for uncultivated wild rice to “exist and thrive,” even as state law continues to uphold expansive abortion “rights.” Senate File 3749 (SF3749), introduced by Senator Mary Kunesh (D-New Brighton) on February 19, 2026, would amend Minnesota’s statute describing the state’s official grain and add language recognizing such a right. The proposal comes three years after Governor Tim Walz signed the Protect Reproductive Options (PRO) Act into law on January 31, 2023. The law codifies abortion as a “fundamental right” in Minnesota statute, and allows the procedure at any stage when deemed necessary for the mother’s health. Wild rice has been Minnesota’s

If this passes.....then anything that might harm wild rice will become illegal. Want to build that home in the country near a lake.....might harm the wild rice, sorry, you can't build on that land that you "own". This is a variation of the 'navigable waters' part of the Clean Waters act which got twisted to the point that, if in the spring, there was a temporary puddle on your land....that was called "navigable waters", even if it was 2" deep part of the year, dry all the rest, and you were prohibited from doing anything like adding some fill dirt to put a driveway through the part time damp spot. People were blocked for decades from using their land because of this nonsense. Eventually, the Supreme Court put this BS away, and things got back to somewhat sane definitions. The EPA wound up controlling huge amounts of land via this crap, and I'll bet that this same thing is now being tried out at the state level...using wild rice. Which isn't rice, by the way. Have they made it illegal for anyone but Indians to gather it yet? I'm sure that's coming, if not yet law.

We are so lucky that Donald Trump and JD Vance defeated Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. In addition to all the reasons that Kamala Harris was awful, Minnesota Gov. Walz made it all worse with what a joke he was as a candidate. If you become known for the ridiculous things you say rather than for doing anything consequentially good, that could be a problem. Walz did become known for something consequential, something consequentially bad. He dropped out of running again for governor after the Minnesota fraud scandal exploded. He helped demonize Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and incited radicals in his state against law enforcement.

Even though this will be his last year as governor due to term limits, Ron DeSantis (R) remains a target of Florida's Democrats due in large part to his effectiveness, the fact that he's unapologetically conservative, and his standing firm on the issues that are important to him and a majority of Floridians. So it was no surprise that amid the marathon session that produced a new congressional map approved by lawmakers on the day of the Louisiana v. Callais SCOTUS ruling, and which DeSantis promptly signed into law, some Democrat state lawmakers staged temper tantrums to protest the map's supposed lack of fairness in representation.

It was a busy week in the news, although, to be honest, a relatively quiet one in meme-world. Trump went to China, the New York Times sank to what could be a new low even for that despicable rag, the Spencer Pratt campaign took Los Angeles by storm, a Hollywood director unveiled a new adaptation of The Odyssey in which Helen is black and Achilles is a woman, the Democrats’ redistricting scheme blew up, for the most part, in their face. But meme-makers responded most to another story, the appearance of the dreaded hantavirus. Here, as someone once said, we go again. And here we go

Not that anyone was watching it, but Whoopi Goldberg had a meltdown on The View this week, and Greg Gutfeld made sure she didn't get away with it. Whoopi went on this rambling tangent about how nobody is running the country. She torched Kash Patel, Pete Hegseth, and basically every official in the Trump administration. "I have no faith in the people who are running anything," she said. "I don't believe in anybody who is running this country right now." Of course, none of them were asking for Whoopi’s endorsement or vote of confidence. Not that that mattered. But, of course, she wasn’t done. She went full theater-of-the-absurd

It was another day on The Five, which means another round of Jessica Tarlov losing her mind over something to do with Donald Trump and Greg Gutfeld methodically dismantling every argument she threw at the wall. On Friday, it started with Tarlov going after Trump's money. She brought up his horrible crime of making money, reportedly $3 billion last year. Gutfeld didn't let her get far. "He made less money this year than he did when he was out of office," he pointed out. That did not go over well. Tarlov, voice rising, fired back: "He's the president. You're supposed to have made $400,000." Gutfeld was ready, "I know this is going to blow

The redistricting battle being fought across the nation has caused a sea change, and now, it's having a notable effect in Tennessee. We saw Democratic lawmakers melting down a week ago over the changes, with state Rep. Justin Pearson (D-Memphis) getting into a disturbing exchange with a state trooper. The redistricting redrew a black majority district, the 9th district, which is currently represented by Democrat Rep. Steve Cohen (TN-09). Cohen is not black. He's held the seat for 19 years, since 2007. He's had black Republicans run against him. (X) Now it looks like Cohen is giving up the ghost. He announced that he wouldn't be running again. Cohen said

Desperate to deflect attention from Minnesota’s fraud scandals, the state’s Democrats have seized on gun control as a political lifeline, much as they did with abortion in 2022. Despite having passed an anti-gun package when they had complete control over state government in 2023, the Democrats have come up with a new bill that, among other things, would ban sales of “assault weapons,” i.e., semiautomatic rifles (and some pistols) with a modern, modular design typified by a black plastic stock rather than a brown wooden stock. Existing owners of “assault weapons,” like me, would have to register their firearms with the state. Governor Walz mused about calling a special session

Senate Democrats spent Wednesday on the Senate floor demanding votes they knew they would lose, on rules that in some cases courts had already thrown out, in defense of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an agency that by the government's own math has cost Americans hundreds of billions of dollars. Republicans obliged them and won every single one. Democrats used a procedural tool called the Congressional Review Act to force more than a dozen resolutions targeting Trump's rollback of the CFPB, covering everything from overdraft fees and medical debt to military lending protections. The real goal wasn't legislation —

Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) missed the last 43 House votes and hasn't been seen for a month — that's maybe not the most disturbing part of the story. The eight-term incumbent is probably best known for her collection of hats — usually sparkly ones — is 83 years old, and so it's natural to fear the worst. Wilson's last recorded House vote was on April 17, and House reporter Jaime Dupree noted on BlueSky Wednesday that she "missed all 10 votes on Wednesday in the House," bringing the total to 43 consecutive missed votes over the last four weeks. When a federal judge shot down a Trump administration policy of holding immigrants without bond last December, it seemed like a serious blow to the US president’s mass deportation effort,” The Guardian told us about a week ago. “Instead, a top justice department official insisted the ruling wasn’t binding, and the administration continued denying detainees around the country a chance for release.” That case, The Guardian claims, illustrates a “broader pattern by the US government’s executive branch,” which is now openly defying orders from the lower courts. The Trump administration, it seems, is learning. Instead of pretending things are a-okay

Unsurprisingly, Democrats are willing to eliminate black-majority congressional districts through redistricting in order to gain more political power, a new poll finds. Democrat politicians and pundits have long claimed that any proposed shift away from race-based gerrymandering is racist, repeatedly weaponizing the issue to smear Republicans. The Politico poll, conducted in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision on the Voting Rights Act, shows “a lot of Democrats are willing to sacrifice Black voting power to beat the GOP.” At face value, respondents — who were Kamala Harris voters — said discriminatory gerrymandering —

Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis commuted the sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters on Friday, shortening her nearly nine-year prison sentence related to the 2020 election. Peters was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2024 but an appeals court ruled last month that she needs to be resentenced after part of the sentence punished Peters for her protected speech regarding fraud claims in the 2020 election. Polis denied that the commutation was an attempt to appease President Donald Trump, instead highlighting that Peters was a first-time nonviolent offender who was given an "unusually harsh sentence."

The complaint, brought by the National Federation of Federal Employees and seven USDA employees, accuses Rollins of "sending increasingly proselytizing communications to the entire USDA workforce, promoting her own preferred brand of Christian beliefs and theology to the captive audience of employees that report to her," since becoming head of the government agency in February 2025. In the complaint, the plaintiffs say Rollins sent emails to all USDA employees on national and religious holidays, most overtly on Easter

In presenting the May revision of his final budget as governor, Gavin Newsom proposed ways to fix California’s $35 billion multi-year budget deficit. The likely presidential hopeful’s attempt to solve the state’s budget woes depends on estimated general fund revenue sources from personal income taxes, corporate taxes, and sales and use taxes. The Democratic governor projected the revenues would run $16.5 billion higher than what his initial budget projected in January. That budget initially proposed revenue numbers that left the general fund with $232.3 billion. The new budget puts the revenue total at $248.8 billion.
