Americans may be paying a hidden “lawsuit tax” through higher insurance premiums and higher prices for everyday goods, as trucking companies face rising litigation costs from staged crashes, massive settlements and “nuclear verdicts.”
Industry groups and lawsuit abuse critics told the Daily Caller News Foundation that costs from frivolous lawsuits and rising settlements are being passed down to consumers through elevated insurance premiums, higher transportation costs and inflated prices for everyday goods. They argue those costs are especially hitting the trucking industry, where rising commercial insurance premiums can ripple through freight rates, grocery bills, consumer goods and even personal auto insurance premiums.

Hopefully with the Supreme Courts ruling that brokers can be held liable for using sub par carriers this will change.

Nothing new. Everyone has paid increased premiums and prices for years because of false and excessive litigation. As a retired insurance agent, I could write a book on what I have seen.
I do agree on the trucking companies getting sued for hiring immigrant, non-English speaking and incompetent drivers. They work cheaper and over the book hours and put all of us at risk. Our interstates would scare a NASCAR driver.

An ambulance chasing law firm here in Florida, now elsewhere, has made it a point to demonize truckers in their '80,000 pound rigs, on endless TV ads.

Yes, #3, that law firm is not only in Florida but across the country. They bill themselves as the largest personal injury law firm in the U.S. The senior partner used to be a major donor to the Democrats but has recently said he is now an independent.

When you drive down the highway and come on a Billboard with some Ambulance chasing scum bag lawyer advertising to get you Millions of damages in lawsuits for your accident injuries you see right there the reason your insurance is so high.
They rip off insurance companies for Millions of dollars for injuries worth thousands or maybe just hundreds. Many times using the same Doctors over and over who participate in their scams.

Agree!
The insurance premium payment for my home is now more expensive than my house payment -including insurance premium- was back when we built the house in the late 1980's.

This was the argument used back in the early 70's against allowing lawyers to advertise on tv and radio. The cost of everything will go up as more and larger settlements for lawsuits takes hold. Plus, the cost for any product will go up as insurance rates rise for the coverage. How many commercials have been made by lawyers and law firms telling people they can sue for everything under the sun and get huge settlements.

Insurance companies are like the government because they can't lose money, they just hit you with bigger bills. People smart enough to build outside of Tornado Alley pay for tornado damage. We pay for the flood damage of others who build on flood plains. Hurricane damage in Florida is covered by the whole country. Car insurance is outrageous even if you have never been in an accident in your life. Simple fender benders that used to cost a few hundred dollars to fix now cost a few thousand dollars. Lawsuits over medical mistakes and malpractice hit you every time you need medical care. The personal injury lawyers are the worst. Trip over your own feet in the grocery store and you can own the store.

IMHO insurance as a whole, especially medical, is manipulating markets to fatten their coffers, not help the people. If that leads to government regulations to slow this snowball than I say let it roll. We the consumer need to get noisy and place this morbid beast on a diet.

George W Bush had a time when he focused on junk lawsuits. The law profession won and WE lost.

Absolutely! When our pResident Halfrican was droning on about "affordable healthcare" on his signature legislation, I was wondering when Americans could expect the same kind of concern regarding "affordable 'legalcare'?" Reason being that these days, you almost need to bring a lawyer when buying a new car, what with all the "fine-print" with underlying consequences expecting signature. The Obamacare capped Doctor's salaries, so why shouldn't we cap Attorney salaries, fees, and ancillaries? Another thing that irks me is how "Big Legal" predates "Big Corporation" even Big Corp followed every single law, regulation, industry practice, workmanship quality standard, etc. whenever some casualty event has occurred, whether single or multiple. Even as a "Force Majeure", "Act of God," or "Force of Nature," an expectation has been embedded into the DNA of Americans to expect payment. A company can build a bridge that stood for 50 years, was used extensively bringing improved quality of life, and livelihoods to a community, perhaps even outliving its advertised lifetime by decades, but when it collapses, killing an unfortunate few, the call goes out for Trial Lawyers to sue the company who built the bridge, its designers, and anyone who supplied steel, rivets, or paint for its construction. They purposely cast a very wide net in an effort to snare someone (anyone) with deep enough pockets to pay their client AND his exorbitant legal fees. To call this merely a "massive racket" besmirches "rackets" everywhere.
