Deadlier With This 1 Weird Trick

Mark me down on the 'deep skepticism' side of the ledger on this one. We need 40 new DDG 51 class ships, the Arleigh Burkes, far more than we need one or two of these things.

Forget about it. At $17 billion a copy, this thing will never float. The Navy tried nuclear power on some cruisers during the last century and the vision was for every surface ship to someday be nuclear-powered. The reality is that they're too expensive to build and even more expensive to maintain. It works on carriers because the reactors don't burn fuel, and all those tanks can be used, instead, to store jet fuel. Also, we now know why the SecNav was fired.

Look at the history of the : 1) Littoral Combat Ships.....tons of money flushed down what are almost useless ships. Long story...look it up if you care. 2) Constellation class frigate program. This was killed last year after costs exploded due to endless, ENDLESS changes in the design requirements, every year or so requiring starting over with a clean sheet of paper....money wasted massively. MAYBE we'll buy a version of a Coast Guard cutter....with a lot of mods and call that the new frigate....except that Coast Guard cutters have a massively different mission profile than a frigate. We'll see if this even happens, or if they are any good. 3) Zumwalt "super stealth destroyer" program. We have two, perhaps to be three of these things. They were to have a primary weapon system of a new type of "super gun" with an advanced long range projectile, predicting 80+ mile gun range, 160 foot circular error of impact point. The shells increased in cost in development until they reached about $900,000 each and that was too ridiculous for even the US government, so the ammo was cancelled. The left the ship with no mission as gunfire was it's primary mission, and there is no ammo for these special guns. It uses an electrical main drive system rather than gearboxes and such. This system was tried on the USS Lexington and USS Saratoga in the 1930s and proved workable but troublesome in the salt air environment. No similar system has been tried in a century....until this series. The guns are gone, it's poor at anti-air compared to the Arleigh Burke destroyers, the stealth seems less important than the sales pitch said it would be, it has limited anti-submarine warfare capability. What to use these ships for? Each cost 2/3 the cost of a Ford class aircraft carrier and are nearly useless. The USN has, apparently and sadly, lost the ability to design and build useful warships, at the same time that our shipyards are closing or have been closed so we have only a theoretical national production capacity for shipping. I doubt that any of these Trump ships will ever go to sea.
