BEIJING - At an unusual meeting Friday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping talked with Taiwan’s main opposition leader about shared culture and bloodlines, before declaring that unification of the island with the mainland is a "historical inevitability." The meeting with Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the Nationalist Party, comes amid heightened tension in the Taiwan Strait over stepped-up military drills by China and Beijing’s disdain for American arms sales to the island.

Israeli leaders overnight Thursday denounced the government of Pakistan, which is mediating the US-Iran ceasefire negotiations, after the country’s defense minister called Israel “cancerous.” In a post on X, Khawaja Asif wrote, “Israel is evil and a curse for humanity,” and asserted that “as peace talks are underway in Islamabad, genocide is being committed in Lebanon.” Israel has been fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon since March 2, when the Iran-backed terror group started attacking the Jewish state with rockets and drones in support of its Iranian sponsor.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — With the ceasefire in Iran still shaky, U.S. Vice President JD Vance headed Friday to Pakistan for high-level talks with Iranian officials, as Israel and Hezbollah traded fire and Tehran maintained its stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz. Many issues could derail the truce and the negotiations aimed at making a broader deal to stop the fighting permanently. Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim news agency, close to the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, claimed that the talks set for Saturday would not happen unless Israel stopped its attacks in Lebanon.

Around 23 million people across California are under flood watches Friday afternoon as Los Angeles braces for what could be a month's worth of rain in a day. Concerns about heavy rain in the area — which receives an average of 0.78 inches in November — are compounded by burn scars left by the Palisades and Eaton fires, which could exacerbate flooding.Risk zones include the Los Angeles and the San Diego metropolitan areas, where a moderate risk of flooding is in effect for Friday and Saturday for potentially life-threatening flash flooding over the burn scar areas of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

The Transportation Department’s new restrictions that would severely limit which immigrants can get commercial driver’s licenses to drive a semitrailer truck or bus have been put on hold by a federal appeals court. The court in the District of Columbia ruled Thursday that the rules Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced in September a month after a truck driver not authorized to be in the U.S. made an illegal U-turn and caused a crash in Florida that killed three people can’t be enforced right now. The court said the federal government didn’t follow proper procedure in drafting the rule and failed to “articulate a satisfactory explanation for how the rule would promote safety.”

The Federal Reserve cut its benchmark interest rate Wednesday for the first time since December and signaled more cuts are likely this year. • Central bankers opted for a quarter-point cut this time around, matching expectations on Wall Street. Stocks initially moved higher on the news, before falling into the red across all three major indexes. • President Donald Trump has been pushing for the central bank to reduce borrowing costs in order to juice economic growth, but the Fed said its decision was based on the need to support a weakening job market.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers on Monday that two North Korean soldiers who were captured by Ukrainian forces while fighting alongside Russian forces in Russia’s Kursk border region haven’t expressed a desire to seek asylum in South Korea. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he’s willing to hand over the soldiers to North Korea if the country’s authoritarian leader, Kim Jong Un, arranges for an exchange with Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russia. Zelenskyy said one of the North Korean soldiers wishes to stay in Ukraine while the other wants to return to his country, which was consistent with interview videos released by his government.

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs knows she is outnumbered this legislative session, with Republicans having expanded their majorities in the statehouse after the last election. But the first-term governor sees room for bipartisan compromise as she looks to advance policies that have long been stymied under the GOP-controlled Legislature. While President-elect Donald Trump swept the battleground state, Hobbs noted in a recent interview with The Associated Press that Arizona voters also elected Democrat Ruben Gallego to the U.S. Senate, sending the message that they want their political leaders to work across the aisle to solve the thorniest of issues.

Last year, Laura Loomer obtained photos of Hunter Biden, his second wife, Melissa Cohen, and their toddler son, Beau, on a lavish vacation in Cape Town, South Africa, with US Secret Service agents in tow.

In Colorado, the highest posted speed limit is 75 mph. I can live with that, even though I think 85 mph might be better and perhaps just as safe. This speed limit of 75 means that it’s against the law to go faster than that. Trust me on this, I used to be a lawyer. But now, Colorado has announced that if you go the 75-mph speed limit in the left lane, or even if you violate the speed limit by going 85 mph, and people stack up behind you who want to go 95, then you’re violating the law by impeding traffic. And you’ll be ticketed for it.

In reports picked up by left-leaning outlets such as the Daily Beast and New Republic, Vatican-oriented freelance journalist Christopher Hale has tweeted that President Obama's chief strategist, David Axelrod, has met in a private audience with Pope Leo XIV. Axelrod, really? What kind of message does that send? The pope has declined an offer to visit the U.S. for its 250th anniversary in favor of a trip to visit the illegal migrants on Lampedusa (which might bring him an unexpected round of protests from angry locals sick of being robbed and raped by them) on the grounds that he doesn't want any trip to be political.

The Artemis II astronauts safely splashed down off the coast of San Diego at 5:07 p.m. Friday after a historic 10-day mission around the moon, finally letting the crew and NASA officials breathe a sigh of relief. NASA regarded the high-energy reentry — streaking through the atmosphere in a nearly 5,000-degree-Fahrenheit fireball at more than 30 times the speed of sound — as one of the riskiest moments of the mission. Space agency officials’ blood pressure was further elevated as experts closely watched the performance of the craft’s heat shield — which astronauts rely on to slow them down and keep temperatures livable.

President Donald Trump slammed Iran Thursday night for doing a "very poor job," of letting oil pass through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. The United States and Iran reached a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday that was contingent on Iran reopening the Strait, which is a critical waterway where about 20% of the world's oil passed through before the conflict broke out in February. "Iran is doing a very poor job, dishonorable some would say, of allowing Oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz," Trump posted on Truth Social. "That is not the agreement we have!"
