Amazon has agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle FTC allegations that the company “tricked and trapped” consumers into signing up for Prime memberships and hindered their attempts to cancel the subscription. FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson said, “The Trump-Vance FTC is committed to fighting back when companies try to cheat ordinary Americans out of their hard-earned pay.”
CNBC reports that Amazon has reached a $2.5 billion settlement with the FTC over allegations that the company engaged in deceptive practices related to its Prime subscription program. The settlement, announced on Thursday, comes just three days into the trial between Amazon and the FTC in a Seattle federal court.

Sounds big but it is only about .1% of Amazon's 2.5 trillion market capitalization. Amazon got told, "Bad dog" but they will poop on the floor again, count on it.

It's incredibly easy to click on the wrong button on Amazon and then automatically be a Prime member. The button to buy an item without a Prime membership doesn't appear in the same location on different pages.

We use Prime and are happy with it. Makes shopping easier and saves delivery charges in most cases.

I've noticed when going through the ordering process, there's the line telling you how much you've spent on shipping this year. And then, 'Try Amazon Prime for Free' sentence. I'm a huge believer in the 'Nothing is free' saying. Next to that 'free' thing is a very teeny 'No Thank You' link which I always click, this morning, for example when I ordered a replacement electric toothbrush. 'Free' ain't always free.

How about offering a plan that offers only why I first signed up for Prime: free shipping.
I'm not interested in their movies, music, or any of that other crap. All I want is free shipping.

Prime sure became expensive for us and we are re-evaluating whether it is worth it. . .

No longer interested in a merchant selling products calling for our president’s assassination. I’ll shop elsewhere.

I repeatedly have the screen stopped by Amazon Prime. "Would you like to try again?". Im pretty belligerent and will search for the x or no but how many sign up without realizing? I've joined not knowing I've done it. They forge on coercion.

I so seldomly use Amazon that Prime is worthless to me. My wife has it for the movies. So if I do need the free shipping I use hers.
I have been tricked into Prime twice. I had to search online both times to figure out how to cancel it.

I quit using amazon for a couple years over that. You order something, they ask if you want prime. You say no, it puts prime on your bill anyway. You try to take it out and it wont remove. It would take at least three tries to get rid of it, and sometimes even that didnt work and I would cancel the whole order.
I can order the same junk from ebay for the same prices with none of the prime hassles.

I only order via Amazon a few times per year, on things not easily found other places, but I have successfully avoided the Prime Scam. It's a damned nuisance to find and click multiple "NO, I don't want a "free" Prime membership" in order to complete the order.
I don't like Amazon, and am frustrated how many folks just ignore the fact that Amazon supports all the things in society that they hate with big bucks.....that they get from their endless support of Amazon. I know some people who essentially order everything they buy on Amazon, other than food.....enriching the evil left and making it easier for them to fund the destruction of the country.
I admit, I do it a little, but a couple of $20 books per year is a literal drop in the ocean of Amazon support.

I order a lot of small stuff from Amazon for convenience. Being an octogenarian using a cane, I find shopping difficult, and the free shipping works for me. We rarely watch their movies but use Brit box a good bit.
I added up the cost of Prime and the free shipping and noticed I come out even on that. The shipping I use and cost of prime are about the same, but that might be different for others. It's worth it to me in spite of Bezos' politics.
There is one thing that irritates me. When you order, you don't know what country manufactured it until you receive it. I want them to prominently put that on every item on their website. Let me decide if I want it. I won't buy products from certain countries if I can help it.

we had no trouble under bezos. now, it's exhausting to shop amazon. you need a lawyer.
and a wheelbarrow for the price hikes. they degrade , limit, or discontinue popular products.
they don't seem to read negative reviews.
and yes, it is easy to make costly mistakes, without knowing.

Never used Prime. Why pay something for nothing? I just always group my items together so they total or exceed the 'free shipping' $ threshold. YOU JUST HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU'RE AT CHECKOUT SCREEN, because they'll try (via default) to sneak you over to the pay shipping bullet, so I always double-check to be sure the free shipping bullet is the one selected!!

We stopped paying for Prime when Amazon kept raising their price. Now if we buy anything from them we make sure it's over the $35 threshold for free shipping. It does bother us that Bezo's politics are so Left. Walmart has a program with free shipping but don't know if their politics are any better.

When I make a purchase, I delete all CC info from my wallet. There is an entire page dedicated to keeping, pausing or ending Prime. Does the 2.5 billion go to consumers? Doubtful.

TK is our family computer shopper. He once had the same complaints discussed on this thread. Now he uses Amazon only for comparison shopping. After choosing the product, he goes to the manufacturer's website and makes the order directly with them.
