The United States is actively working to regain control over Bagram Air Base in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, President Donald Trump said in remarks on Sept. 18. U.S. forces relinquished control over the major air base in 2021, during the force drawdown from the country. The United States handed over control of the base to the U.S.-backed Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, which collapsed in August 2021 as the Taliban seized control over the Afghan capital city of Kabul. Speaking during a press conference in the UK on Thursday, Trump suggested that the current Taliban authority in Afghanistan needs things that the United States can provide, and may be amenable to a deal allowing

Brilliant. Bagram was a vital, lone footprint in a really bad area that requires constant monitoring in all directions. We gave away much more than a runway when it was abandoned. Leave it to Trump to cut a deal with the Taliban, who are no worse than many other questionable organizations around the world with whom we're in strategic kahoots.

Getting Bagram back is a great idea. The problem is getting to/from it without getting blasted. Will The Boulevard be back open for business? Are we paying Pakistan enough rupees, or shekels, or clams, or bones to allow us to wander back and forth freely?

Like everything else that Trump states overtly, however provocative, watch what he actually does. Annex Greenland?! Canada 51st state?! This is "The Art of the Deal" in action. Notice that Trump inserts China, the real object of the discussion. On it's surface, the claim does not make sense to re-take Bagram Air Base (BAF to us OEF veterans). It's like negotiating with the Vietnamese to reclaim Ton Son Nhut Airbase four years after the fall of Saigon. We have no diplomatic relations with the Taliban government. BAF is a land-locked base in the middle of "Indian country". The base would need to be constantly sustained either by airlift of via the former GLOCs snaking through Pakistan (good luck to that). Ultimately BAF would be a multi-billion dollar investment in the long run. Again, there's more to the calculus than what Trump is stating in a press conference. Hint: watch China's reaction.

Somehow doubt the Taliban will simply let us have it and I doubt they will rent it to us. Are we going to kick the Taliban out of power? They will attack our troops if we move in. We have been in Afghanistan for 20 years. At the time, the general consensus was it's time to leave. Was that a mistake? The pullout was botched by Biden. Troops died. Equipment was left behind. I recall stories that Americans were left behind. What ever happened with that?

The Justice Department asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday to shut down lower courts’ “interference” with President Trump’s efforts to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. In its emergency application for stay, the Trump administration requested that the high court place a temporary pause on a preliminary injunction issued last week by Biden-appointed District Judge Jia Cobb. That order sought to block the president from removing Cook from her position with the agency. Trump announced he was firing Cook “on Aug. 25 over allegations broached by one of his appointees that she committed mortgage fraud related to two properties she purchased in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Atlanta in 2021,

Each mortgage agreement described the representation as material to the lender, reflecting the reality that lenders usually offer lower interest rates for principal-residence mortgages because they view such mortgages as less risky.
