The $130 billion train that couldn’t

Original Article

In the annals of stupid and poorly run schemes, the California High-Speed Rail project ranks among the worst. Its future, even a dramatically scaled down one, has become ever more precarious since the Trump administration’s Department of Transportation rescinded $4 billion in funds already granted the project. Governor Newsom has already filed a suit to reverse the action, but he can’t legislate away the reality that this project is an abject embarrassment. When voters approved $9 billion in 2008, Rail estimated it would cost $33billion and start running by 2020 – just for the San Joaquin Valley portion. The cost has since ballooned to $130 billion; no stretch is operational.

Comments:

The scenario plays that California is like a gambler betting away everything he owns, and then begging, borrowing and stealing from everyone they meet to help them place another losing bet.

No government project has come in on budget in California. The rules, regulations, requirements, payoffs, lawsuits and red tape prevent cost effective, on time successful endings.

Many years from now there will be a tourist attraction in California known as “Newsom’s Folly”. People will pay to visit the rotting relics of the train to nowhere just like they visit ghost towns.

IIRC, there was a similar boondoggle years ago in the Florida Keys when the "bridge to nowhere" was constructed. I have no idea if it is still there. Deer Key?? Memory fades when you pick up stakes and head north on highway US 1.

Reminds me of the Big Dig in Boston. Costs kept going up and completion dates kept moving out. From what I hear, it still leaks water into the tunnel.

This project should have been killed in the design stage when it should have been known that not only would the permits and regulation requirements strangle it but that nobody would ride this train, ever. Californians prefer their cars just as the rest of the people in this big beautiful country do. If they really needed a train, it could have been built inland, through the barren deserts, not through prime real estate. Politicians lined their pockets with the federal funds and spread the wealth around to their business pals and the labor unions. Those people can eat up money faster than Godzilla can eat Tokyo.

The Federal Government has a fiduciary responsibility to guard the taxpayer's money and to use it wisely. The money that California squandered already should not he continued to be dispensed. Newsome can pound sand. The gravy train is over.

More than 100 criminal cases at Boston Municipal Court have been dismissed as Massachusetts defendants go without lawyers in the wake of an attorney work stoppage. Virtually all bar advocates — private lawyers hired by the state to represent people who can't afford an attorney — are no longer accepting district court cases due to a pay dispute with the state. The Lavallee Protocol mandates that defendants who do not have attorneys within 45 days are to have the cases against them dismissed without prejudice. "The case dismissals today, with many more expected in coming days and weeks, present a clear and continuing threat to public safety ...

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he had reached a settlement with CBS and Paramount triggered by a 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. 'We have just achieved a BIG AND IMPORTANT WIN in our Historic Lawsuit against 60 Minutes, CBS, and Paramount,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'Just like ABC and George Slopadopoulos, CBS and its Corporate Owners knew that they defrauded the American People, and were desperate to settle.' Trump said that Paramount/CBS/60 Minutes paid $16 million in the settlement and anticipated an additional $20 million from the new owners of CBS in advertising, PSAs or similar programming.

Nigel Farage has said violent UK offenders could be jailed overseas under his plans to cut crime by half. The Reform UK leader named El Salvador as a likely destination, though he said he has not held conversations with officials there and "multiple" partners would be considered. El Salvador is home to a notorious mega-prison, the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT). "It is quite astonishing that to keep a prisoner in a British prison it costs nearly £52,000 a year. "You could send a child Eton for that price. "So we can send some of our worst violent criminals overseas to serve their terms ..."

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has proposed sending some prisoners overseas to serve their sentences, as part of a raft of measures he says would create around 30,000 prison places and cost £17.4bn. Speaking at an event in London, he also announced plans to build five prisons, return foreign prisoners to their country of origin, and recruit 30,000 police officers. Farage said the UK was "facing nothing short of societal collapse" and that a Reform government would halve crime in five years. He said crime costed the British economy £170bn,

Uthmeier has been one of the most vocal supporters of the president's anti-illegal immigration agenda. (snip) Uthmeier, along with Florida Gov. The investment will expand research and development and cell therapy manufacturing, with a new drug manufacturing facility being built in Virginia. AstraZeneca will also improve its clinical trial network within the United States and support investments in novel medicines.

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom asked nonprofits to donate at least $610,000 to groups that call for defunding or abolishing law enforcement since 2023 before distancing himself from such stances. Immigrant Defenders Law Center (IDLC) and Immigrant Legal Defense (ILD) received $500,000 in 2023 and $110,000 in 2025, respectively, at Newsom’s request, according to state records first reported by The Washington Free Beacon. IDLC has advocated for defunding the police and worked to free illegal immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while ILD “prioritizes abolishing immigration detention and reimagining the U.S. immigration system entirely,” the group’s website says.

The Trump administration imposed new restrictions Saturday on flights from Mexico and threatened to end a longstanding partnership between Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico in response to limits the Mexican government placed on passenger and cargo flights into Mexico City several years ago. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Mexico’s actions to force airlines to move out of the main Benito Juarez International Airport to the newer Felipe Angeles International Airport more than 30 miles away violated a trade agreement between the two countries and gave domestic airlines an unfair advantage.

Tech giant Microsoft is facing mounting scrutiny after explosive allegations from Navy whistleblower Tom Schiller surfaced in an interview with journalist Laura Loomer. According to Schiller, Microsoft allowed China-based engineers to provide technical support for US Department of Defense (DoD) cyber systems via its Government Azure cloud platform, potentially giving Chinese personnel access to highly sensitive military information for over a decade. Loomer shared the claims in a post on X, stating that Microsoft had enabled “full access to classified information out of the Pentagon” through its support structure and that this practice had been authorised during the Obama administration.

Microsoft announced a surprising decision: they will no longer use Chinese-based engineers to provide technical support to the United States military. This drastic step was taken after investigative reports from ProPublica sparked national security concerns. In fact, this report prompted US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, to order a two-week full audit of the entire Department of Defense's cloud contracts. The ProPublica report reveals that Microsoft is using engineers from China to manage US military cloud computing systems. This practice immediately raised great concerns, considering Microsoft itself was hacked by hacker groups from China and Russia.

Now the Trump administration wants the Supreme Court to declare that such rules in Hawaii, California, New York, Maryland and New Jersey violate the Constitution.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) issued a demand Monday for the “immediate withdrawal” of all soldiers from Los Angeles, after the Pentagon announced that the U.S. Marines would be pulling out of the city. In a statement, Newsom said: The women and men of the California National Guard deserve more than to continue serving as puppets in Trump and Stephen Miller’s performative political theater. There was never a need for the military to deploy against civilians in Los Angeles. The damage is done, however. We, again, call upon them to do the right thing and end the militarization once and for all.

Hunter Biden really walked smack into it when he “crashed out” during a YouTube interview with Andrew Callaghan that was released today.
