Easter, the holiest day on the Christian calendar, should have its own federal holiday, according to a Republican senator.
Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., wrote in an X thread Monday that he introduced legislation to create a federal holiday for Easter. It would fall on the Monday after Easter Sunday.
Schmitt wrote that while “81%” of Americans celebrate Easter, “our current holiday schedule makes it way too difficult for families to celebrate together.” Easter falls on the longest unbroken schedule of workdays, Schmitt wrote, with March and April being the only back-to-back months without a holiday.

No. It is a religious holiday that not everyone celebrates and unless we want to federally recognize other religious holidays like Passover, Ramadan, Diwali, and Halloween, then no.
Leave cultural and religious holidays to those who celebrate. none have to be endorsed beyond what has already been established.

Might make sense to replace the fake holiday Juneteenth.

No! Federal employees (I almost said workers) do not need or deserve another paid holiday. Polish and other Central European communities already celebrate Dyngus Day, the Monday after Easter.

I'd like to see a bill that says we recognize holidays on the day it falls, instead of adding the Friday before or the Monday after, just so some people can stay home or go shopping. Pay the people that have to work, double time and a half for a week end holiday when they work. Here in my South Louisiana Parish, most business and government offices are celebrating the Monday after Easter and are also taking off Good Friday, for a 4 day weekend. It's getting out of hand.

so long as Sundays are special, not necessary - because Easter is THE Sunday and the specialness of all Sundays is for the memory of this one. But as the deranged left are trying to de institutionalize Sunday, maybe we do have to do this.

No. Too many holidays now. If they want to add another, delete at least two old ones first.

This year, both western Easter and Orthodox Christian Pascha are on the same Sunday. Most years, they are separate Sundays. I agree with Sen. Schmitt's idea to extend Easter through Easter Monday, which is the norm in Christian-majority countries. It is nice to have a day for rest and recreation after all of the church services during Holy Week.
How might this idea work for Orthodox Christian families? Most years, we would still be the odd ones out. Bonus, we get all the Easter goodies at half price. We buy those chocolate rabbits and smash them up to make chocolate chip cookies.
Some years ago, I took my son for a family Pascha (Easter) at a town about 200 miles away. On Easter Monday, I phoned my son's school to inform them that he would not be back until Bright Tuesday. The attendance secretary scolded me, "Did you get permission from the classroom teacher for your son to skip Monday?" I replied, "No, I did not. I am not in the habit of asking anyone for permission to exercise my First Amendment rights."
