Details have emerged of the first batch of stores that Big Lots is closing for good.
The 292 locations, dotted all over the country, are offering as much as 50 percent off bargains - prompting a rush of shoppers looking for deals.
The Columbus, Ohio-based chain on Monday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after years of making big losses. In total, it plans to close a third of its 1,392 locations to cuts costs as it woos a new owner. Retail experts say Big Lots main problem is that it markets itself as a place for bargains, but it is often more expensive than the likes of Walmart and Target.

Lowe's is more like Home Depot, not Big Lots. ????

It's hell to be in retail. Our Big Lots store in Grand Junction CO is on the list. Sad. The corporate business model just isn't working. It needs a healthy makeover so it can go forward and with a new owner.

The last sentence of the intro tells their story. The road to business hell is paved with fakery.

Huh? I never go to Big Lots for nails, plants, or garden tools. Never mind, I don't even shop at Big Lots.

I got good deals when Big Lots sold products from lots but they quit that and only had new chinese products. I havent been back since they did that 25 years ago. The Brit who wrote that headline has no idea what Lowes sells

Why bring up Lowe's in the headline at all. Lowe's has nothing to do with Big Lots.

Maybe "The Daily Mail" should be called "The Daily Fail". Everyone knows Lowe's merchandise is nothing like Big Lots. . .except of course, The Daily Fail!
On a side note, the article does exemplify the disastrousness of Bidenomics.

Lowe's has almost nothing in common with big Lots, Big Lots was more like a weird Walmart-Dollar Store mish-mash.

Their stores have no rhyme or reason anymore. There is cheap household items, basic tools, knock-off DVDs, and rows of junk food. They used to be famous for discounted products that were overproduced or discontinued for one reason or another.

They both have a front door and a parking lot. That's about it.

Seems when Big Lots consolidated with Odd Lots and started their huge expansion plan they thought they could become a KMart replacement. It was pretty much the midwest version of Pic & Save, part 5 & 10 cent store & last season's closeouts for very deep discounts on housewares, toys, books & small appliances. Now there's Ollie's and other closeout-bargain stores filling their old niche quite better than Big Lots does .

Our local Big Lots started their closing sale a couple of months ago but that was mostly because the new corporate owners of the shopping center jacked up everyone's rent recently so none of the current businesses can afford to stay. They are charging downtown city rental prices in a largely rural community. I suspect that all the businesses there will move out as soon as their leases come up for renewal. Our Big Lots was actually always busy and doing good business.

Obivously the "journalist" doesn't know anything about Big Lots. Its a cheap, off brand store. Lowe's sells building supplies, home supplies and everthing in between. Definitely not a junk store. When a cheap store can't survive, that tells you that people have no money.

I’m kind of glad I’m retired now and past the time of my life when shopping was recreational. I always loved browsing and shopping at Tuesday Morning, Stein Mart, and Big Lots (aka Pic ‘n Save and MacFrugal’s). It is truly a shame what has happened to our economy since 2020.
We have a mall in our town that is one of the few that’s thriving, with new stores opening. I used to love shopping at Belk and Macy’s, but the way they price things is ridiculous. Everything gets marked down from outrageous prices to begin with, it’s all cheap crap, and even the sale prices are no bargain.
Target and Kohl’s are on my no-go list.
Libs ruin everything.

Well, I can probably forgive Daily Mail for not having a clue the difference. I wouldn't know the difference between Harrods and Pickles.

More than likely the corporation needs to expunge the typically "incestuous" Board of Directors and Executive Staff, starting with the CEO, and replacing them all with a small team of employee volunteers (aka "leaders") who possess a true, long term stake in company success. Most executives only "hanging around" for the executive perks and until they can find a buyer for their company, after which they offload it for their super-payday, "walkaway" bonus.
