Fifty injured after pilot ‘lost instrumentation’

The pilot of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner that plunged suddenly en route from Sydney to Auckland on Monday, injuring 50 people, reportedly told passengers after the terrifying incident that his “gauges just blanked out” and he “lost all ability to fly the plane”. Twelve passengers were hospitalised and dozens injured after a “major incident” on board LATAM flight LA800 caused the plane to dip violently, with ambulances rushing to Auckland Aiport just before 4pm local time. The Chilean airline said an unspecified “technical problem” caused “strong movement” in the air. Unrestrained passengers were sent flying through the cabin and into the ceiling, with some left covered in blood. Video

Something is fishy here. If a plane is in level flight or descend/climbing smoothly the plane is "trimmed." Loosing instrumentation, whatever that means, would not result in a sudden plunge. Most likely clear air turbulence.

This doesn't make any sense, and as a pilot and engineer, I don't believe it as it stands. Sounds like a routine encounter with severe turbulence. Perhaps the severe turbulence caused some damage to the instrument system, perhaps temporarily cutting power. The screens going blank should not affect the aircraft attitude in a sudden way, unless the pikot freaked out and did something radical with the controls. There has to be a lot more to this story.

Starting from the age of 18 when I left to start my Navy career it was the first time I flew on an airplane. The longest time in the air was when I flew from Singapore to WVA. That last one was in the mid 90's and the plane from Singapore to Spain was a huge double-decker. That was an adventure. Now with everything from the TSA still being the joke of what we in the military back in the early 2000's called them the Too Stupid Agency. Plus, AA hired pilots and planes falling apart in flight you couldn't pay me to fly anywhere. I'll do like guard Bishop told Cameron Poe in the movie Con Air. Next time I'll take the bus.

They need to say how old these planes are because if they have any airtime on them the problem is with poor maintenance. The big companies have been forced to hire based on being "Fair" to everyone regardless of whether they are competent which is scary. Our competitors and enemies hire the best not by checking DEI boxes. We are doomed.

AI has reportedly left its mark on the prestigious Pulitzer Prizes for journalism, with five finalists incorporating the technology in their potentially award-winning submissions. NiemenLab reports that the integration of AI in journalism has reached new heights, as evidenced by the recent disclosure that five out of the 45 finalists for this year’s Pulitzer Prizes in journalism utilized AI tools in the process of researching, reporting, or presenting their entries. This revelation comes from Pulitzer Prize administrator Marjorie Miller, who noted that the 2024 competition marked the first time entrants were required to disclose their use of AI.
Is Joe Biden ready for a big Haitian migrant flotilla? 8 replies

With the collapse of Haiti, the Biden administration has whipped out $300 million for an international aid effort, which like all the other ones, will probably go to beltway consultant contracts. But true to form, it's doing very little about an expected migrant flotilla that is very likely to happen, even though it has authority to do so. Witness this exchange between Rep. Matt Gaetz and three Pentagon officials associated with the region: My transcription: GAETZ: ...we can't really tell because the gangs are in charge, the government has been thrown out, and as a Florida man, I'm deeply concerned about this wave of people that we're about to have, that we

Former President Trump is projected to win the GOP primary in Washington, thereby clinching the Republican presidential nomination and setting him up for a rematch against President Biden, according to Decision Desk HQ. Trump is expected to notch at least 1,215 delegates — the minimum number needed to secure the Republican nod. Ahead of the Tuesday primaries, Trump had been awarded 1,077 delegates, according to DDHQ, meaning that he needed at least 138 delegates. Between the Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi and Washington state GOP nominating contests, there were 161 delegates up for grabs.

European countries have foiled an increase number of terror threats over the last year, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. Many of these incidents were left unreported until now. In one incident, which occured last December, Austrian and Bosnian authorities arrested two separate groups of Syrian and Afghan refugees who were found to be holding arms and ammunition. The arrested parties had photos of Israeli and Jewish targets in Europe, leading authorities to believe that their motives may have been connected to Israel's war against Hamas. In another arrest from late last year, a group of Tajik nationals had been detained

Democrats had basically two objectives on Tuesday: create the impression that the Hur report exonerated Joe Biden, and repair the damage done by his assessment of Joe Biden’s poor memory. Well, they failed at both objectives. Special Counsel Hur explicitly said that his report was not an exoneration of Joe Biden. As for the issue of Joe Biden’s memory... they didn’t do any better. In fact, anyone who reads the transcript will see just how bad Biden’s memory was while he was answering questions. Washington — Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito on Tuesday extended an order blocking Texas troopers and police from arresting and jailing migrants suspected of crossing the U.S. southern border without authorization under a strict state immigration law known as SB4. Alito continued an administrative stay of a lower court order that had paved the way for Texas officials to enforce SB4, one of the toughest state immigration laws in U.S. history. The pause was previously going to expire on Wednesday evening. Alito on Tuesday extended it through Monday, March 18. Passed into law by the Texas legislature last year, SB4 authorizes Texas law enforcement at the state and local levels
