A new California law is set to take effect in the beginning of the new year that will require police officers to inform drivers of the reason for a traffic stop before proceeding with any further questioning. The legislation, which was passed in the fall of 2022, is intended to be a significant step in addressing pretextual stops and creating more transparency. Before AB 2773, officers were not required to immediately tell a driver the reason for the traffic stop. The measure also requires law enforcement agencies to include the reasons for each traffic stop on arrest reports. Typically, the officer would ask if the driver knew why they

Just when you think California can't get any dumber. What is wrong with those people?

Why bother pulling people over? The police get in trouble and the criminal goes free. Let em go. Newsom and the dems want depopulation anyway. Remember dems YOUR party loves death and destruction.

I support this. Tell me why from the start, cite, warn or whatever and let's get on our way. Ciao, Cris

FTA: 'The new procedure is designed to reduce pretextual stops, a practice in which law enforcement officers stop a driver for a minor traffic violation or another minor infraction as a pretext to investigate a separate and unrelated criminal offense for which they don’t have the necessary reasonable suspicion or probable cause to justify the stop.' Gruesome promised the drug dealers they can make their deliveries, unimpeded. And serial killers need to dump bodies expeditiously...to decrease the surplus population.

How long will it take before some Trial Lawyers decide to sue the State because Cops aren't telling people what their 'Probable Cause" is for pulling them over? This is yet another "feel good," anti-racist, knee-jerk reaction that will be overturned soon after it hits the street.

what's the big hullabaloo? simple solution:
- just don['t have any conversation with the offender but
- just simply state the offense and
-ask no further questions then
- write the ticket and
- send them on their way
the less said between an offender and a police officer the better

When I was doing traffic, the first thing I said was what they did then asked for license and registration. All the while watching their hands and the hands of anyone with them. Unless of course they were pulled over because they were 'wanted'...different tactics then..

A cop pulled me over and asked me why some time ago. I replied “well if you don’t know either, I guess I’ll be on my way.”
He started laughing and sent me on my way.

Despite other posters' objections, this is a good move.
A police stop is a tense situation every time. If your answer to the officer's question is 'speeding?', it's already an admission of guilt.
The usual 'pre-textual stop' begins with the officer saying 'you were weaving'. An indefensible accusation. What's wrong with being told the reason for the stop?

I support our law enforcement officers and know how hard their job is. I also above all believe in the constitution. The fbi taught me the only thing to say to an officer is “I do not answer questions.” “Am I being detained?” “Am I free to go?” I would turn over my license, registration and insurance but that is all they get from me.

Don't they already (try to) tell you why? Seems more like the rats are solving a fake problem in order to look anti-cop and give the driver a way out of any arrests. From what I see on many You Tube videos some drivers start out with their endless stupid talking and won't let the cops tell them what's going on. Will they now just tell the Judge they didn't hear the reason?

I agree that it's a good move. An honest answer to a question like, "Why were you speeding?" is an admission of guilt.

I would guess that the forbidden questions would be "may I see your driver's license" and "are you an American citizen?" even though the car has twelve brown people in it, is painted bright lavender and sits an inch off the ground.

Thanks for the laugh, #10! There are a number of YT videos of police officers pulling drivers over for various infractions. From the ones I viewed, the officers did tell (or try to tell) the drivers the reason for the stop. However drunk drivers are in a class by themselves. They don't seem to understand what they're being told and insist ad nauseum that they did nothing wrong and so the police must allow them to continue on their merry way.
However, some stops are downright hysterical. One girl was the epitome of politeness; she answered all questions posed to her in a respectful manner and was willing to take any test the officer wanted to administer. She just couldn't get the hang of the breathalyzer though; she couldn't blow as hard as required. After several tries, she apologized because as she stated "I have no organs in my body".
You can imagine the officer's response.
Another drunk woman hit a house. When the police found her she was parked on the side of the road a block or so from the house talking to triple A to report "car trouble". She denied she hit any house --- despite a piece of it lodged in her car's grill. Then she asked the officer to describe the house she "allegedly" hit. He responded by asking her how many houses she hit that evening.
These types of stops have to be a huge test of the officers patience but thankfully many of them also have a sense of humor.
