Starting in 2024, the American Ornithological Society will be looking into changing the names of up to 80 bird species in the United States and Canada "in an effort to address past wrongs."
“There is power in a name, and some English bird names have associations with the past that continue to be exclusionary and harmful today,” Colleen Handel, the organization's president, said Wednesday in a release.
She continued, "We need a much more inclusive and engaging scientific process that focuses attention on the unique features and beauty of the birds themselves."

FTA: The organization's CEO is "excited" by the "new vision" to create an "inclusive naming structure.”
I guess I'm really not curious to know what else "excites" this CEO.

EVERY book that mentions even ONE of these birds needs now to be edited and reprinted.
What next minerals? Vegetables? Trees? Flowers? Fish?...insects?
Many of the people birds, insects, animals, plants are named after are the FIRST people to ever find them, describe them, submit learned papers of their physiology, taxonomy, ranges, habits, "Naturalists". In the 1840's relatives of mine rafted down the Ohio river to the Mississippi, then took steamboats to the gulf, then up another river into Texas while their main goal was to collect horses and set up others to collect them and ship them to the midwest...they also counted and collected every kind of "Strange" animal, vegetable, mineral they came across. Shipping those back east for universities, museums, collectors and private displays. Most eastern/european people had never seen them before, some were "Brand new" species. None were named after my relatives, but some were named after the expeditions sponsors, the buyer of things, or educators who dissected, drew, painted, stuffed and described them for scientific publications...Audubon was/is probably the most famous of the "Knowledge Bringers" of that era. Though Sir Joseph Banks, Darwin, Cook, Lewis and Clark, Stanley and Livingston also did the same, in different regions.

I remember in the 50's and 60's the riots in the streets because of these racists bird names. Finally all has been corrected and the population can rest easy without the threat of "names"

Let's see, can't have loons or cuckoos any more, insults the mentally ill. Can't have cardinals, too Catholic which offends Muslims and atheists. No more blackbirds, too racist. I'm sure we could think of a lot of others.

No more bald eagles. Triggering to people with hair loss. No more red winged blackbirds, obviously. Woodpeckers in general must be terribly triggering to trans men. Put them on the rename list. Blue jays, triggering to people with color-blindness. Cardinals, gotta go, separation of bird and church, of course. Kingfishers raise a couple of issues: king, of course, screams patriarchy. And fisher is clearly offensive to vegans. Sadly, I could play this stupid game all day. What have we become? And not to be racist, but I do occasionally go out bird watching. I can’t say I’ve ever seen people of color with binoculars at my regular haunts.

Many years ago, well before the start of this currentwoke nonsense, Woonsocket, RI decided to start calling "Manholes" to "Personholes". They stopped after they got massively ridiculed for their "Woonsocket Personholes". It's what should happen in all cases like this....make fun of them. People like this have no sense of humor anyway and will be highly offended when people laugh at them.

FTA:
“As scientists, we work to eliminate bias in science. But there has been historic bias in how birds are named, and who might have a bird named in their honor. Exclusionary naming conventions developed in the 1800s, clouded by racism and misogyny, don’t work for us today, and the time has come for us to transform this process and redirect the focus to the birds, where it belongs,” AOS CEO Judith Scarl said.
People with WAY too much time on their hands, but in search of things no one even considered being a problem until they determined it was a problem they needed to rectify, I guess.
