Miami’s Francis Suarez looks to become
first sitting mayor to be president

In a 2024 Republican presidential field full of long-shot candidates, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez may be — on paper anyway — the longest long shot of all. No sitting mayor has ever been elected U.S. president, a job that historically has been won by governors, vice presidents, senators or Cabinet secretaries. Some former mayors have become commander in chief, but only after serving in higher-profile positions. None of that has deterred Suarez, who announced his campaign this past week by talking up his experience leading the city of about 450,000 residents.

Talk about all hat no cattle. Beyond the fact that his father was Mayor (of Miami, not Miami/Dade County where the real work is done) and he is glib and Hispanic what on earth does the man have to offer. Of course, a fear is that some Republican (even though he voted Democratic in 80% of the last major races) will do a Kamala and slot him as VP. Totally ceremonial man.

Many untalented people are "looking to" that office now that Joe has set the bar so low that any brain dead puppet can get there if enough donor money is spent. I'm looking for Fetterman to put his size 3X hat into the ring. Our government has fallen so far into incompetence that if your skin is not white, your politics are somewhere beyond the orbit of the moon and your desire to tell people what to do is as strong as that of a school study hall monitor, you have a chance. Go for it, amigo; if hispanic illegal invaders get the vote by election day, you have a shot.

Meghan Markle could become one of the highest paid influencers in the world, receiving £200,000 per post to endorse brands, experts have suggested, as she is tipped to become the new face of French fashion house Dior. The Duchess of Sussex was dealt a blow by audio giant Spotify earlier this week after it was announced that they would not be renewing her podcast Archetypes for a second season following a 'mutual' decision - a move that could see Meghan and Prince Harry lose $10 million. There has never been a time in the history of these United States when there was a greater need for truly genuine Christian fathers than now. Study after study shows that children raised in two parent traditional families have not only a much better chance of success in life, but also see a significant reduction in mental health issues including reduced levels of suicide. The dark days in which we are living cry out for a solid cadre of real men who will stand up and be counted for truth and righteousness — steadfastly taking their rightful position in the family.

In what was surely a case of unintended consequences, the landmark Supreme Court decision one year ago overturning Roe v. Wade is putting abortion opponents increasingly at odds with public opinion and creating political perils for candidates on their side. In a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll, one in four Americans say state efforts that have followed to impose strict limits on abortion access have made them more supportive of abortion rights.

Monday, the nineteenth of June, is our newest federal holiday (just 2 years old), Juneteenth, and federal workers get yet another day’s pay without having to work for it. Since the federal workforce is heavily overrepresented with black workers (18.2% of the federal workforce versus 12.6% of the population), the words “disparate impact” come to mind, benefitting African Americans with a paid holiday that not too many other employees get, judging by the fact that I was able to book two appointments with service providers tomorrow before I even realized Monday was holiday.

In 1970, the Soviet dissident Andrei Amalrik wrote an essay with a heretical title: “Will the Soviet Union Survive Until 1984?” That earned him derision in the West. From the East, he won a five-year stay in an Arctic labor camp. Today’s heretical question might be: Will the Russian Federation survive until 2024? For below Russia’s impassive surface, new forces are in motion, ones that could threaten Vladimir Putin’s hold on power.

Scott is the only Black candidate in the 2024 Republican presidential primary race and Haley is Indian American. Which has got to leave a sour taste in Scott's mouth, given that he's the only black man in the presidential race, and what's more, he's actually lived firsthand through the era of real racism as a child growing up in the South. Asked about Scott’s messaging, Obama said there was sometimes a tendency among Republican candidates to gloss over the effects of racism, arguing that candidates need to address racial disparities to be taken seriously on the subject of American unity.

Brian Kennedy: I think it’s worth saying that the country has gone from a republic to something for at least the last hundred years of a progressive administrative state. And that administrative state has become very large, very intrusive, very ineffective. But somewhere between when you said dismantle the administrative state and today, I think we’ve crossed over into something more like a totalitarian democracy, which is a regime that has aspects of totalitarianism, but with many of the forms of democracy.

Happy Father's Day. Nineteen sixty-four was our last Father's Day in Cuba, but no one remembers much about that. We were just lucky that our father was out of a political prison. Many of many friends were not so lucky. I did not hear the following story until years later, and I fell in love with it immediately. This is a great Father's Day story to share with your father or sons. We lost our father seven years ago, and my sons will confirm that I've recounted this baseball tale a few times.

Women in our society have traditionally been treated with a unique honor and respect. Were we always treated fairly? Not entirely -- there was a time when we couldn’t vote. There was a time when women couldn’t own property. True. But since forever men have been showing us, even in small ways, that what we have to offer society is paramount. We can make babies and without babies, mankind cannot fulfill even the most basic mandate -- multiply and fill the earth. In my misspent youth I found Gloria Steinem inspiring and myself ill-used.

Smoke from forest fires arriving from Canada this summer is choking residents of the United States and millions more Canadians in the prairie and eastern provinces. Thick, roiling smoke may pose health hazards to the aged and infirm in both countries. The origin of the fires traces back to late winter and spring. An abnormally dry winter left Canada’s boreal forests in conditions ripe for fire outbreaks from various causes, including ignition from lightning strikes in tinder-dry material. Forested portions of Alberta and British Columbia have been the sites of pine bark beetle infestations that have left millions of acres of dead trees and combustible residue on the ground.
