Lululemon CEO Calvin McDonald defended the firing of two employees who confronted three masked thieves robbing a Georgia store and called the police, with McDonald saying that company policy is for staff to “let the theft occur” and not try to intervene.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy that we train our educators on around engaging during a theft,” McDonald told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Friday, with “educators” being the company’s way of referring to their employees.
“We put the safety of our team, of our guests, front and center. It’s only merchandise,” he added. “They’re trained to step back, let the theft occur, know that there’s technology and there’s cameras

If I were an employee I would just start walking out with free stuff when my shift was over. One thief is as good as another.

These policies are common and are probably appropriate no matter how angry staff might get watching theft occur on their shift. On the other hand being terminated for this cause should automatically support being hired into the police force.

Chances are not too many of his employees are endeared to that CEO. As instead of firing his two employees outright, that CEO could have taken the two employees aside and explained to them his and the corporate policies that call for thieves to safely shoplift from their retail outlets and then gone on.

Doesn't sound like good policy for the safety of employees and customers. If thieves know Lululemon allows shoplifting, what's to stop thieves from robbing the employees or customers too?

Sheer, unadulterated, cowardly BS!
There is no guarantee that a criminal will not harm someone even if they "step back"!

Why even have employees ? Just cover up the cash register and mark your product prices as FREE.
Better hire an employee to take care of the weekly re-stocking.

I can’t read the article because I refuse to register on the site. Did the employees actually confront the thieves or did they just call the police? I can sort of see not wanting a physical or verbal confrontation, but what’s wrong with calling the police?
I told a cashier in a CVS to do just that back in the 90’s. I was in the store with my 8 year old daughter when two black guys got into a fight back near the pharmacy. I walked up front and told the cashier to call 911. She stood there agape for several seconds until I yelled at her and only then did she pick up the phone. Then I got us the hell out of there.

Babylon Bee had a meme where 2 employees were terminated for not bringing the stolen items out to the robber's car :-)

How many of those that stepped back and let the theft occur have been killed anyhow?

How many thefts have occurred, and the thieves caught, and prosecuted? Something like, in the last year, we have had 200 theft incidents, costing how much, and how many were caught and prosecuted, and any amount recovered? I am guessing None.

Is there a pool on when Lululemon will go out of business?
Yeah, "know that there’s technology and there’s cameras" and how will that get you your lost merchandise (that your company paid for) back? Is your stuff THAT overpriced?

Just another stupid boss more worried about potential workmans comp claims than his insured inventory. All in all, I still think he deserves to go broke.

Great policy. And then raise the prices on everything to make up for the loss of revenue.
