Conservative teenagers are, in general, significantly happier than their liberal peers, according to a study conducted by Columbia University. "The politics of depression: Diverging trends in internalizing symptoms among US adolescents by political beliefs," was published in the journal Social Science & Medicine – Mental Health in December and while its findings were striking, the reason behind the trend is unclear. We may hold certain rights to be "self-evident," but that is simply a comforting fiction derived from the American Revolution. In 2014, I published an essay listing ten reasons I am no longer a leftist. Something happened last Monday that hurt my feelings a lot and reminded me of another reason: I’m poor. This is counterintuitive. The Left depicts itself as the champion of the poor; the Left depicts right-wingers as hating the poor. Backstage, behind all the speechifying about “compassion,” a very specific left-wing attitude to the poor is abhorrent to me. I encountered that attitude last Monday. I felt disgust, rage, and sorrow.

My reaction to this news is "duh." But the obviously leftist authors are truly bewildered by the finding. And it's not just that conservative teens are happier, they find more meaning in their lives. The leftist researchers probably think that conservatives stole happiness and meaning from oppressed groups and should pay them reparations.
