Losing Canada

After the Chinese Communist Party’s 1949 victory in China’s civil war, the question of “Who lost China” rocked Washington. As President Biden makes his first presidential trip to Ottawa this week, he should ask if the next country about which that question will be asked is Canada. The loss would not be economic. The U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade pact continues to underpin a vast economic relationship neither party wants to undermine, although recent Biden administration policies to promote “Buy America” are an irritant that violates the spirit of that agreement. Canada, as the smaller and more trade-dependent partner, cannot afford to lose the privileged access to U.S. markets that the USMCA ensures.

There's no mystery here. Canada is like our other NATO "allies", fully dependent on a deep-pocketed Uncle Sam for defense. Its military is dysfunctional, with few assets and less will to maintain them. NORAD may be a joint venture, but it's not. Who's going to attack Canada? The simple fact is that, like many other countries, including the USA, Canada's politicians are bought. China understands corruption, as it is itself corrupt. Buying politicians and keeping them bought, directly or indirectly, is cheaper than military conquest and less deadly. We tried it in iraq and Afghanistan, under Gen. Petraeus. Sometimes it worked pretty well. Then China has its Belt and Road program allowing it to build and manage (and profit by) key infrastructure and further buying goodwill. They are more capitalist than the USA!

Canada is one more oppressive law away from Communism now. The government is totalitarian, the people are terrified of the authorities and the police, taxes are in the neighborhood of 50% and their health care system sucks so bad that if they need anything more than a band-aid they run down to the US. The only reason the border between us exists is to prevent the importation of cheap liquor and Cuban cigars. They have little of value other than big fish for fishing and large mammals for hunting.

It is really pretty much over for Kanada as a free nation. PM Trudie is in the back pocket of Klaus and the Great Reset crowd while Parliament admires him. But the Kanadians have their ice hockey up to look forward to so everything is just fine.

President Joe Biden's job approval rating has fallen to 38% in a new poll from the Associated Press and the National Opinion Research Center — close to his lowest rating ever in that poll. Just last month, Biden's rating was 45%, which was as high as it has been since his rating began a long slide a few months after he took office. What's going on? The economy. In the month since Biden's previous, higher rating, people have become deeply concerned about the safety of the banking system. They have renewed worries about inflation. They are concerned about some difficult-to-understand maladies affecting world economic stability.

Minnesota lawmakers on Thursday advanced legislation that would establish the state as a "trans refuge" for children who are seeking transgender medical procedures but who may be denied "gender-affirming care" in other states. In a party-line 68-62 vote, the Minnesota House passed HF 146, which had been introduced by Rep. Leigh Finke of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Finke is the state's first transgender lawmaker. Democrats supporting the bill say the legislation will protect transgender people, their families and healthcare providers from facing legal repercussions for traveling to Minnesota to obtain cross-sex hormone prescriptions or sex-change procedures.

For years, President Biden has maintained a Sgt. Schultz defense ("I know nothing, nothing!") to counter allegations that his family has profiteered on influence peddling with foreign countries and companies. Despite mounting evidence to the contrary, Biden maintains that he "knows nothing, nothing" about son Hunter Biden's business deals. He recently doubled down on this defense by even denying that family members received money from foreign sources. He repeated his denial even after the release of financial transfer reports from his own administration showing millions transferred from China. Now, emails have emerged that show that Biden personally helped draft responses to the controversial deals in 2015

The banking crisis is like a brick thrown into our economic pond. Busted banks don’t just sink silently to the bottom, never to be heard of again. Their plunge sends ripples out across the entire surface that wash into every financial inlet of our lives. If you think this has nothing to do with you because you didn’t invest in Silicon Valley Bank or keep an account there, think again. The spreading circles of its demise will splash you if you merely feel the pinch of high interest rates or buy groceries. Thanks, President Joe Biden! Why? Because his policies are to blame.

Republican lawmakers on Friday lambasted President Biden for his response to the death of an American in Syria, arguing that he's showing weakness and failing to deter America's adversaries. The criticism came one day after Biden ordered the U.S. military to carry out retaliatory airstrikes in Syria, where Iranian forces had killed a U.S. contractor and wounded six other Americans in a drone strike. The U.S. launches reportedly killed eight Iranians. Iranian-backed proxy forces then proceeded to carry out their own retaliatory strikes on Friday, launching rockets that targeted a U.S. base in northeast Syria. There are no U.S. casualties and no damage to the base, according to first assessments.

The bill seeks to strengthen parents' knowledge of and involvement in their children's education. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy described the purpose of the bill as follows: "The Parents Bill of Rights has 5 pillars to ensure parents have the right to have a voice in their kids’ education: Right to know what’s being taught in schools and to see reading material; Right to be heard; Right to see school budget and spending; Right to protect their child’s privacy; [and]

Thousands of human bone fragments believed to include the remains of victims from the Nazi and colonial era were buried in Berlin on Thursday. They were found in 2014 during construction work at the campus of Berlin's Free University, a site that was once home to the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Anthropology, Human Heredity and Eugenics. The university believes the bones came from "criminal contexts" dating back to Germany's colonial period and that "some of the bones may also have come from victims of Nazi crimes."

Hollywood, specifically the film industry, is going through a legitimate, serious, and potentially fatal phase. No one likes the movies anymore. The key to a healthy industry—audience goodwill—is evaporating quickly. Sure, there have been some recent hits. Avatar: The Way of Water just became the second-highest worldwide grosser (not counting for inflation) in history. The last three or four Marvel movies have made money. But let’s not kid ourselves. Avatar 2, just like Avatar 1, has had no cultural impact whatsoever. I know of one person who saw it, and when asked his opinion, he replied with a shrug. My guess, and this is just a guess,
