Dodging the Apocalypse

A little over a week ago, on Sunday, March 12, a near-catastrophic event occurred that could have wrecked the lives of everyone reading this: A massive eruption of solar material, known as a coronal mass ejection or CME, was detected escaping from the Sun at 11:36 p.m. EDT on March 12, 2023. The CME erupted from the side of the Sun opposite Earth. (snip) If it had been facing in our direction, if the earth had borne the full brunt of that blast, we can scarcely imagine the results. It’s likely that all operating electrical systems would have been immediately destroyed, the same as the telegraph systems in 1859.

Thanks to God our Holy Father, the CME was on the opposite side of the sun and we are still here and our satellites and electronic technologies are working. Meanwhile, the left continues to push its communist agenda in Amerika as if the CME was no biggie. Humanity can consider itself dam lucky...this time.

We could have hardened our grid for a fraction of the money squandered on Ukraine. A real threat is ignored while tilting at the windmills of an imaginary one. But not to worry, our government is functioning as intended.

Every time I read apocalyptic articles like this one, I come away depressed, thinking, “What’s the point of getting the oil changed in the car or buying that new teeth whitener when we’re all going to be fried next week?” Great article, J R, but a real downer.

Everyone owes a death. Whether that debt is paid by accident or illness or some apocalyptic event is a small matter. Don’t waste time thinking about it. It will arrive in its own time. While alive; LIVE!

CMEs aren't particularly rare. But hitting the Earth is incredibly unlikely. There are two 'good news' parts to CMEs. The biggest thing protecting Earth is luck. Imagine that one of the holes in a bowling ball could fire a high velocity bullet outwards, on a radial line from the center of the ball, as it rolls and spins randomly. The direction of the shot is any of 360 degrees in all directions. The odds of that bullet getting a bullseye on a target 93 million miles away is, fortunately very small. The second thing is that our magnetic field, the same thing that makes compasses work, which will deflect a good bit of the CME, but definitely not all. Worrying about this is like worrying about getting hit with a comet. Extremely unlikely, and not a damned thing that can be done about it. Also, he exaggerates the likely effects, too. Should be less than a EMP.

Not so, #4. It is entirely impossible to fully protect the grid against a CME. And regardless of if it WERE possible, Congress has no will to do it, they've been doing relatively little for years. Government is generally uninterested in preparation for very rare events...especially those which haven't happen even once in living memory. Do I wish they'd improve the grid? Yes, of course. But full protection isn't possible. The best think would be to have a good supply of spare equipment stored and ready for repairs.

One of the more delightful aspects of being a dissident from the absurd apocalyptic climate doom cult is the ability to laugh at the decades’ worth of failed, yet quite specific predictions of disaster from purported “experts” that the media has gleefully trumpeted. The track record of the failure of previous predictions matters not in the least, as if mass amnesia has infected not just the media, but government, academia, and the corporate world. Yet, all of these commanding heights of our political economy are united in pushing forward with ruinously expensive schemes that cannot work

All of these bullets connect — ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) ideology permeates everything, and it will cost us all.

Oil companies have come under increasing legal scrutiny and face allegations of defrauding investors, racketeering, and a wave of other lawsuits. The striking and seemingly radical legal theory is laid out in a paper accepted for publication in the Harvard Environmental Law Review. In it, the authors argue fossil fuel companies “have not simply been lying to the public, they have been killing members of the public at an accelerating rate, and prosecutors should bring that crime to the public’s attention”.
