The infrastructure for living without a smartphone in the West is slowly disappearing. Thanks to societal changes made during the pandemic-induced lockdowns of 2020, many temporary adjustments — QR code menus, digital boarding passes — have become permanent.
Nowadays it’s rare to go to a restaurant without grabbing your phone for access to a menu or for ordering takeout. Some concert venues actually require guests to show their tickets from their mobile devices.

Hear! Hear! It’s to the point that one can barely navigate life unless one is tethered to a smart phone. I had a medical imaging test last week and the results were sent to my phone. Despite all the security hoops I jumped through I am not convinced that the information is secure. I’m just about at the point of telling these techno-geeks I don’t have a smart phone. It would be interesting to see them cope with that little dilemma. I like the idea of Luddite clubs. Whatever happened to privacy?

I had a flip phone for 20 years. I finally got a smartphone because of easier texting, and I like having notices by text. I do no banking on a smartphone. Tmobile just had all their customer accounts stolen. Bank of America just has Zelle money transfers compromised. A criminal can accost you and get your phone, and have you access banking. No way I would ever have banking on a smartphone. For people addicted to them, I wish they would take a moment to look, before crossing streets, be aware that there are other people coming down the sidewalk, and driving while texting, or using a phone, is a huge distraction that will cause wrecks. Conversations in America's waiting rooms have stopped. Everyone is on a phone.

I don't have a phone. Don't need one. Would never use it. Went to a lab today and was told to sign in on the Kiosk. I had to ask what that was and a nurse helped me. Now they want me to create a portal to get lab results on my computer. Now why would I do that. Send them to my dr, I'll go see him. He'll understand what they say.

My husband is searching for a decent flip phone. They are all just horrible! We think they are making them bad on purpose, to get everyone on their tracking system with "smart" phones.
We want an old style non-tracking flip phone that will work with Patriot Mobile (AT&T towers). Any suggestions?

I do not want a smartphone and therefore I don't have one. I want to make a call or a text on my phone and that's it. I have no need to carry anything else. I even write checks instead of using my card. People look at me like I am crazy when I tell them I have a flip phone. I don't care. It is so pathetic to go out to eat and you see a whole family sitting together but each lost in their own little smartphone world not talking to each other. Fork in one hand a phone in the other. I assume that there will come a day when I might not have a choice but until that moment FJB and smartphones. I have a laptop and two tablets at home which is more than enough to do what I want to do, what I need to do. I do shop and pay bills. Both helpful and I can research any topic I wish. I just do it all at home. The original reason I never got a smartphone was the price, completely ridiculous. When prices dropped for hookup and specials were offered for phones I still did not care. I have never felt the need and until I have no choice my choice is a $100 phone and a fee of $23 a month.

I had to get a 5G phone from Tracfone because my old flip phone wouldn't work on their new system. It is still a flip phone and I just ignore the smart part and use it only as a phone. I use this computer to get medical results from my doctor or hospital.

I hate QR Codes. My kid got me a digital picture frame for Christmas, and the instructions simply said, "Click on QR Code to download app." My tracfone ($20 plus tax for 3 months) is not on the web, and I was really ticked off. The kids think it's hilarious, but I resent not getting instructions in plain english. I also hate when doing laundry, the tags with washing instructions take up 3 tiny little tabs with even tinier print, but none of them are in english, but they have these "universal symbols" that I guess everyone is supposed to know what they mean, but I must have been absent when that was taught. Gawd, I sound old!

Try Jitterbug by Lively. Nice little flip phone. Easy to use.

Dont have a phone. The wife has a flip phone and is always struggling to get people to understand we aren't "smart". Email works best for me. There are not many people I want to talk to anyway. If you aren't on our call list we dont answer. Life is good.

I have no trouble at all. I leave mine home most of the time and use it mostly to check the weather against my tee time at the country club. If I can't find the phone I just look up at the sky.

Smart? My IPhone's Siri is the dumbest helper I've ever seen. She continually makes the same mistakes...so much for AI!

I got a cell phone when I couldn't find a pay phone at an airport years ago. For years, it was mostly turned off. I forget and leave it at home about half the time. I refuse to do monetary transactions on it, but have to admit I used it to program my Christmas lights, my powered house shades, and my outdoor cameras. Unfortunately, phone apps are the only way to control all them.

#5, try Consumer Cellular. I use a flip phone, and my texting is limited to short text. It is a phone after all.

I do have a smart phone and find it useful but no banking, no stock portfolio link etc. Use mostly as a phone and texting. My wife’s late uncle never gave up his flip phone. Always said, “If people want me, they can call me, If I want someone, I can call them.”

#10, My brother had a Jitterbug by Lively. They upgraded their system on Jan 2, 2023 and he had no phone for half a month. I had to email them about the problem and they sent a new phone. I have a smart phone because I love playing with toys. But they aren't perfect. They sent an upgrade that caused the phone to lock up the hands free phone system in my car. Gave up and had to unpair the phone from the car. When I was a kid there was a comic strip called Dick Tracy who had a wrist tv. Back then I was sure those would never happen. But that's what a smart phone is.

Love my Flip Phone! I do a lot of hobby work in my workshop or on vehicles and I don't want or need a $600 glass-faced computer in my pocket. If the wife and I are on the road and we need to accomplish some task that requires a 'smart phone', I just delegate that task to her.
Someday I'll probably get one but....... not today!

OK, I'll bite.
Had a cute little Nokia pre-flip (brick) with BOOST for years; I only carried it (turned off) in the car with me for emergency (only cost me a few dollars a month).....until they turned off their 3G network and I was 'forced' to get something else...sad day.
Now replaced with a sweet teal-blue Nokia 6300 4G (5x2").....NOT a smartphone, but more like a smart dumbphone...has a few little bells & whistles beyond texting and calling + internet access if I ever needed it, which I don't.....all from T-Mobile for $15./month! LOVE it!!

Resisted buying a smart phone for years, until I needed one to continue my volunteer work (deliveries, multiple partied texts, other). That being said, I don't always carry my phone with me - too much like being back at work. The people I volunteer know that they may not get an immediate response to their texts.

I wish cell phones had never been invented.
As the Eagles once said, "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device."
They were ahead of their time, huh?

Like many of you in the comments, I resisted having anything other than a flip phone. But when the 5g upgrade happened, I could not locate a flip phone that would accommodate 5G. They sold them at Wal-Mart, but they were always out of stock. In a time crunch, I conceded to get a $60 android phone. Thanks to a You Tube video, I was able to disable the tracking and listening devices. Camera was rendered unusable. I do miss my flip phone, though.
