A woman accidentally ran over a man suspected of trying to steal her truck's catalytic converter in the Los Angeles suburb of Palmdale Tuesday evening, CBS Los Angeles reports. The suspect later died.
Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies arrived at a retail parking lot at 5:56 p.m. Tuesday.
A "lifted" 4x4 Ford Excursion truck was partially backed out of a parking space, deputies said. An unidentified man was underneath the vehicle.

A frail grandma, whose husband is in even poorer health, of my acquaintance, trying to sell her pickup, parked it on the street, and yes, her CC was stolen. cost her 1500 for a new one, installed. Cost her that money, and even more difficulty she didn't need. It was a thief that has no comprehension of what they do to others.

#4 is correct about the size of Ford Excursions. They are massive, and heavy. If a catalytic converter thief gets either the trunk of his body or his head overrun by a 7,000# vehicle, the vehicle always wins. As Scorpio (The Killer) said in Dirty Harry, "Freeze cop. Now, left hand, pull out your gun." [Harry pulls out his .44 Magnum] The Killer: "My, that's a big one."

One more Tip: Best way to stop the thief is just start the car and run over the perp, probably best to turn the wheels while you go back and forth a few times.

This happened to us, 5 days after my husband’s discharge from the hospital. I still get nervous and jittery whenever I hear a noise coming from the outside at night. I’m not crying for this creature who got run over. Hope he’s enjoying his special place in hell.

LA issues this warning to avoid injuring someone trying to seal your stuff:
FTA: 'Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. offers tips for owners of trucks or SUVs -- "especially lifted ones need to be more cautious because it's easier for criminals to get underneath them"'
Let them finish before moving your vehicle.

Re #10 and others....if you CC gets stolen, DO NOT go to the dealer to get a new one installed.
I thought I had a bad converter on a high mileage Honda - the Computer Code was "bad catalytic converter".....so I replaced it with one from O'Reilly....$150 instead of $650 at the Honda dealer - plus installation. I installed it myself. The "check engine" light stayed off for months....but it came back, because the problem was actually failing oxygen sensors, due to 275,000 miles of wear and tear.
Even if you can't install it yourself, an independent garage with the $150 version should beat the heck out of the dealer price. Similarly, the actual fix was two new oxygen sensors. One at $275 and one at $250 at Honda dealer, on the parts counter. At O'Reilly, $125 and $100, what a great deal, right? At Rock Auto, mail order - SAME Nippon Denso part number as OEM Honda and O'Reilly, for $65 and $50. These unscrew, screw in, plug in the wire connector. Not too difficult to change out.
I went from $525 in parts to $115 in parts using Rock Auto. I have no connection to them except as a very satisfied customer. If you can wait for mail order parts, and not every fix can, you can save a lot.

I have three cars and a two-car garage, so one car is parked outside. I keep nothing in it. I had the catalytic converter etched and registered, and I park it up against the house, behind a wall with two security cameras and motion-activated lights trained on it. If my CC gets stolen, at least I'll have good videos.

Yeah, #5. Google says shortest ground route between Palmdale and Los Angeles is a little over 62 miles. Less, as the crow flies, but the Angeles National Forest is in the way for ground travel.
Soon, they'll declare Nevada a suburb of Los Angeles.

Rat own, #24. To those with the skills and online parts - tons of money to be saved. Son is again going through repair hell with DIL's 2015 Accord. This round - timing chain. $2200k. Last year, high pressure fuel pump, over $2k. Dealer. The dynamics are too lengthy to discuss.
