My husband and I once got lost in Montana, which is a thing not to do; Montana miles are extra long and one must cover so very many of them to ask directions. It was a Twilight Zone experience. I’m sure that it’s obvious to all thinking Americans that our society is driving through its own Twilight Zone, lost and unable to locate the right highway. Many of us don’t even seem to realize that we’re heading toward a bridge that collapsed ages ago. We have taken ten wrong turns…
We have lived in such astounding wealth that we’ve come to assume that

What a silly and defeatist point of view. I have built a nice life for myself and my children and I intend to keep it, even if I have to vigorously defend it from a corrupt, wrong-headed and sleazy government. My rights, ideals and pride are deeply ingrained, my property they can take, except for the defensive capabilities which I have built up and fully intend to employ to prevent my home and my surroundings from being ruined by a bunch of leftist goons and/or global elites.

Thanks for your apt reply, #1. I am beginning to wonder about the assignment editor of American Thinker (write anything, just turn it in!) What a whiny pant load the first two articles were. Glad I'm not a regular subscriber. I'd be crying in my beer before breakfast!

#1 and #2, I do not see this piece as defeatist, it is realist. All of what he writes is currently happening, you cannot denie it. You also cannot curl up and hide in your happy place and hope it passes. And #1, no matter how well you are armed and how Ramboesque your training and physical prowess is if some politically empowered little pencil neck elite wants what's your, he will take it, your bravado and big talk will not even slow them down for the time it takes you to reach under your pillow.
The reason is that while we have all been curled up in our bunkers deluding ourselves with fantasies of our armed and physical prowess in a post apocalyptic world the real world has been morphing into a 1984esque utopian hell. one in which those who sat out the boring everyday struggle to stem the tide of totalitarianism will be seen as the crazy lunatics fringe and having years earlier disengaged from the political process have become irrelevant.
The author is right in one point, as is shown so many times in history, a soft and lost civilization, one wallowing in wealth and privilege, where the ease of life allows the populace to ignore the real struggles of day to day living and spend most of its time seeking pleasure will never recover without the ugly intervention of some outside force. Often, but not limited to, War. It can be sudden or it can be long and drawn out but it is most certainly inevitable.

WOW! I read it twice and was deeply moved. “Heading toward a bridge that collapsed ages ago”
I’m not religious but these thought brought to light the biblical quote posted here recently (hat tip to Rinctum”).
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the Darkness of this world, against Spiritual Wickedness in high places”. Ephesians 6:12
See Moses, Mt. Sinai, Tablets.

A lot of this is exactly correct....but I am very, very pointedly NOT part of the author's "we".
And I have also recognized that the overwhelming majority of Americans today think that our wealthy, comfortable, and pleasant lifestyle is the equilibrium condition of mankind. And most imagine (farily mindlessly) that any and all disturbances, and changes in that system cannot upset that equilibrium. All distubances will be temporary, and the equilibrium of wealth, comfort, safety and plentiful food will be
quickly re-established magically after any temporary disruptions.
No one has the ability to deal with "systemic failures", even slight ones. The electric power grid is increasingly unreliable, as part of the headlong and accelerating rush to "renewables", meaning solar panels and windmills. Solar panels absolutely WILL NOT put out any power at night, so are a wasted investment 50-60% of the time, depending on latitude. And windmills are equally unreliable, generally over a year producing about 1/3 of their theoretical power capability on the average.
One kind of "power" half the time or less, and the other can put out rated power about 1/3 of the time.
So, we seem to be being forced into a future with power grid outages being the norm rather than the rare exception. How many can deal with that? How many can cook with the power out.....as the Demonrats seek to eliminate all gas stoves so that even MORE people won't be able to prepare food if the power is out.
And food supply. Ho many have even the vaguest notion of what to do if one, by some miracle, was given a 100 lbs of wheat, or oats, or a few bushels of apples, or ears of corn, or tomatoes, or fresh beans? What percentage of modern city dwelling Americans could make a meal for today from that plenty? And how many could take the excess and store it so that they could eat in six months?
And nobody seems to really care. The latest Netflicks entertainment, or the newest video game, or phone trick are much more important. And no one cares if our elections are rigged, and our politicians work for foreign enemy states.
I try to teach all the young people that I know to understand these things, but I'm old and most aren't all that interested, although some really are. Some young people DO know these basic skills, repairing things, growing food, storing food, living without "the system". I'd imagine that they make up about 1% or so of Americans.
I can't change this and the WEF/Globalists and their Demonrat allies are furiously destroying everything, and working to enslave us all. I may be able to slow it a bit for another decade, maybe even two, if my health holds out, but soon enough, all us oldsters will be gone and the young, and mostly very, very ignorant will be left to fend for themselves. It seems like the world of the "Hunger Games" movies is likely the future.

Well, yes most of this article is true, but IMO it is not all black or all white. We may end up in a totalitarian state, similar to the old USSR or the current China controlled by the CCCP. A color dismal and very dark gray. Or it could come down to a violent separation between red and blue states or areas of control. I only know one thing for sure, God is in control and I will keep my eyes upon Him, while I pass the ammunition.

Obama brought us every bit of this. And it will not get better without revolution.
