The Thinnest Veneer of Civilization

Civilization is fragile. It hinges on ensuring the stuff of life. To be able to eat, to move about, to have shelter, to be free from state or tribal coercion, to be secure abroad, and safe at home—only that allows cultures to be freed from the daily drudgery of mere survival. Civilization alone permits humans to pursue sophisticated scientific research, the arts, and the finer aspects of culture. So, the great achievement of Western civilization—consensual government, individual freedom, rationalism in partnership with religious belief, free market economics

The exact truth of our current situation. It's as if Civilization were a luxury apartment, filled with new furniture and state-of-the-art gadgets, that a bunch of apes have somehow inherited, and all they are doing is craping on the floor, eating everything in sight, smashing the tables, hanging from the curtains, chewing on the electric cords, and generally trashing all that's useful and beautiful.

Those who have learned the basic skills of living, meaning doing the dirty jobs that keep your belly full, your home heated and such as that, and how to repair those required systems will do OK. It is the people I call the "systems people", those who literally cannot repair anything, own no tools, and have no ability to use tools if they found an unlimited supply, those who would starve looking at a standing cow or pig, trying to imagine how to turn it into meat and store it, those that a handful of beans or dry corn are only understood to be eaten, not planted in spring, will not do so well. The demand for "expertise" in Feminine Studies, or Black Studies, or Modern Art, or Political Science or Journalism will be low. The demand for a auto mechanic, a plumber, a carpenter, a welder, a machinist, an excellent shot and a practical engineer will be high. If you have time to learn more of those "Mike Rowe Dirty Jobs" type of skills, you should probably learn at least a bit about them all, and encourage young people to learn these things. If these dangerous fools do manage to actually break down civilization, and I am not yet convinced that they will succeed even though they are trying mightily, those skills will be what defines the difference between life and death. I hope that we can avoid heading into Dark Ages 2.0 , but the WEF is doing all in their power to make it happen.

"Western civilization" rests on the erroneous conclusion that all humans yearn to be free, and that they value what we enlightened folk value. It's not true and never has been true, yet the fable is repeated by left, right and center as the basis for their social and political agendas. American culture was once the glue that held together our national consensus. That culture is continually under attack these days, by left and right. Where once we were a culture that agreed government intrusion was unwanted, today it is invited - so long as it is on "our side". Rights? Let's not talk about 2A or abortion, but free speech, assembly, and petition. Both ends meet in the middle, agreeing in principle that these can be restricted IF the rights of the other. Otherwise, it's "hate", "sedition", or communism. Our marketplace of ideas has become a bazaar resembling a Soviet department store. Say the wrong thing, advocate the wrong cause and you'll be canceled, or worse by one side or the other. Western civilization, by and large, was born on prosperous third base and thinks it hit a triple. There's a big world out there. And it doesn't think like you, nor understand your "freedom."

The first goal of any civilization is to assure the reproduction of enough children to keep the population from shrinking. At today's level of medical technology that means 2.2 children/per woman ON AVERAGE. But ever since the 50's the birth rate has fallen well below that level. That is when effective birth control came along(including abortion). And with it a cultural attitude that having children was uncool. We are evaporating.

,#5, you couldn't be more wrong. That is the reason why everybody wants to come to America. In their own country they may not see our experience of freedom, but they see it expressed in America and the things it does and the lives it leads, and they want it because it's better. At the moment we are being manipulated by commies and one world global oligarchs. But they will pass and the freedom that is natural to America will come back and people will see it as a very good choice. The EU fears Giorgia Meloni for exactly that reason.

#11 - That's the fable we tell ourselves. Let's take those streaming across the southern border, from Mexico, Central America, Middle East, China, Afghanistan and elsewhere. What is their motive? PROSPERITY, not "freedom". SAFETY, not "freedom". REPATRIATION, not freedom. SOCIAL JUSTICE, not freedom. For Mexicans the USA owes them reparations for taking Texas from Mexico, stealing California, Arizona and New Mexico, too, fighting a contrived war of conquest - no better than the oppresive Spaniards and French imperialists, or hacendados land barons with their massive haciendas. They are all drawn by that shining city on the hill, where all things are free to them. Where the law doesn't apply whether they are peones or coyotes, they are "refugees". Even gangbangers are welcome in our borderless country. (Ask your local law enforcement about your own community.) You think they're here mainly for your idea of "All-American freedom"? Some are...others certainly not. How free you feeling yourself these days? It's your country and culture, right? Pick one of these folks up on a highway for a good samaritan lift, then see who goes to jail if the Border Patrol stops you, or the local sheriff.

#12, have you ever talked to illegal aliens who come here and live? They bloody love it - they are FREE to find a job, a place to live, to educate their children (sure, on our dime, for now), and to pursue the American dream (yes, illegally, but for the same reasons we do), and to send some money back home. They do not all do crimes and deal drugs; rather they work their a#$es off. And I am definitely against illegal immigration, but even so... This country and its founding principles are God's gift and God is not blinking.

Do you like to think that you vote for the man, not the party? Then I should inform you that in the Senate race, if you vote for the Democrat, you are voting for Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), regardless. There is a nice little ProPublica website that compares the voting records of senators. I used the 2021-22 session to make some comparisons. (I pulled the data on Oct. 6. There may be more votes in this session after that date.) This first figure shows how many senators voted with Schumer, Democrat majority leader, by the percent of agreement.

By now, everyone who follows politics should recognize that the liberal media will deliberately ignore embarrassing gaffes by President Joe Biden, especially if they suggest he's not mentally sharp enough to be the president. Biden asked, "Where's Jackie?" about a congresswoman killed in a car crash two months ago was a TV black hole: nothing on the morning and evening newscasts on ABC, CBS, NBC, and PBS, and nothing on CNN or MSNBC. When we think of violence we usually associate it with the destructive actions like stripping our law enforcement budgets of badly needed funds or allowing repeat offenders back out on the streets to commit more crimes. Images of pedophiles or hopped-up perpetrators accosting innocent people just going about their business pop into our heads along with the mug shots of crazy people with guns who have entered our schools and murdered our children. Trigger words don’t even make it to our 'B' list of violent behavior, but that was before a few of our government agencies entered our private space and started poking

With news that Israeli intelligence has detected an “irregular presence” of nuclear-capable Russian bombers near Finland and retired general David Petraeus casually saying NATO would likely sink Vladimir Putin’s Black Sea fleet if Russia used a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine, it’s perhaps time for a few questions: First, can we discuss a situation that could very well result in thermonuclear war — and the end of life as we know it — intelligently and rationally? Or must all questions about our Dr. Strangelove policy be met with childish name-calling (e.g., “stooge of Putin!”) designed to silence debate?

The final take on the disastrous Mar-a-Lago raid and its noxious aftermath – the latest in a series of “killing blows” aimed at Donald Trump and the movement he created -- is that Trump must run once again for president and must win. The logic behind this is simple: the Deep State, in its slow, dull-witted, and utterly inept way, is making its big move, and Trump is the only visible figure who can stand against this. The Left is well aware of this, and is terrified. Consider the timeline: on August 7, the Senate passed the “Inflation Reduction Act,” dramatically expanding government spending, including doubling the size of the IRS.
