Russian military call-up sparks major exodus

President Putin's decision to partially mobilize Russian reservists has sparked a mass exodus of men trying to avoid the fighting in Ukraine. Juri Rescheto reports from Riga. Thousands of Russians are trying to flee the country while they still can, fearing they will be called up and sent to fight in Ukraine. The Russian Defense Ministry has claimed that only 300,000 men up to the age of 55 with prior military experience are being mobilized. Russian media outlets have, however, reported cases where older individuals and men without military training have been called up as well. Online media outlet Novaya Gazeta Europe has even reported government plans

I hope that this is an indication that more people are seeing war as not worth the cost and massive destruction is too much to bear. I hope.

My guess is that they see Ukrainians more as fellow Slavs rather than as enemies. On top of the basic disinterest in many young fighting age Russians, I think Putin has substantially misjudged this whole thing, and probably has been fed bad information on force readiness for years. Also his intel seems to have been quite inaccurate (like our CIA stuff often is, too). He fired something like 50+ FSB intel officers a few months back, validating that he knows he got bad intel assessments. Corruption in a peacetime military, and Russians are world class experts on corruption, can totally undermine an army. We've seen photos of $10 or $20 million latest tech air defense systems abandoned intact because the tires failed when they used the normal low pressure system for travel on soft ground after being forced off of paved roads by attacks. This low tire pressure causes much extra flexing of tire sidewalls, and aged-out tires which weren't replaced in storage as scheduled, but the new tires sold out the back door, will work fine at full inflation on pavement with little flexing, but as soon as they try their built in soft ground low pressure mode...the sidewalls rip out, stranding the vehicle. There are other issues which competent observers have commented on if one is interested in military affairs and searches for relatively competent and relatively even handed external observers. Avoiding many of the official Ukrainian and Russian, AND American sources is a key when searching for facts. There is an Austrian colonel who does some interesting briefings from his post at their equivalent of West Point. Here's an interesting video by an Australian that I consider to be a pretty reliable and careful source, for anyone looking for more info, outside of the US news media which I find to be woefully ignorant and shallow, and of questionable accuracy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNLTE75B0Os&ab_channel=Perun

Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Sunday that the Democrats know "they will lose" if the midterm elections end up being a referendum on President Biden. While discussing Democratic and Republican midterm messaging, NBC's Chuck Todd played an ad by the Arizona Democratic Party focused on Kari Lake that tied together abortion rights and crime. Todd said that he wasn't sure if the ad was really effective or if they were trying too hard to tie the two issues together. "Look, I think that Democrats, if the election is about who is the most extreme

Beto O'Rourke, who is facing off against Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in November's election, said that the rightward shift of Latino voters in recent years is partly due to a disregard for the demographic by Democrats. Candidate Biden didn't spend a dime or day in the Rio Grande Valley or really anywhere in Texas, for that matter, once we got down in the homestretch of the general election," O'Rourke told a crowd at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Saturday. "You got to be locking eyeballs with the people that you want to fight for and serve and whose votes that you want to win."

Danchenko, a Russian national, was the key researcher behind the key document—the Steele dossier—behind the key effort to undermine candidate, and then topple, President Donald J. Trump: Russiagate.

There is growing frustration throughout the country over President Joe Biden’s poor performance in handling the economy, and there appears to be no group more concerned about Biden’s lack of leadership than Latinos. In July, Quinnipiac University released a poll that showed Biden’s approval rating among Latino voters at 19% and a disapproval rating at 70%. Daniel Garza, president of the Libre Initiative, a nationwide Latino outreach organization, shared with me that “with majorities of Latinos expressing their belief that America is heading in the wrong direction and feeling the pain of runaway inflation, it is no surprise to see a political realignment — benefiting the GOP — happening in

With our border crisis worsening by the day, President Joe Biden is throwing up his hands and letting everyone know that whatever’s at fault, it’s not his terrible policies. His latest nonsense? The claim we’re seeing a border surge because “these people are fleeing communism” in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. No: Migrants from those countries account for 27% of August encounters with Customs and Border Patrol. They’re an increasing share of the total — but it would still be at record levels without them. And the reason for the surge from all nations is that Team Biden is (in some cases quite literally) waving migrants in

Many in Russia fear a "partial mobilization" of the military is the first step in a move that would see more and more men fight – and die – in Ukraine. Some have tried to escape and others have even dared to protest. Russian President Vladimir Putin made a rare televised address to the Russian people on Wednesday morning when he announced a "partial mobilization," saying the measure was needed to protect Russian people from what he called "the entire war machine of the collective West" in Ukraine.

The end is near. For Putin’s military options in Ukraine, that is. Wednesday in Moscow, Putin said he will call up reservists and hold political referenda in captured Ukrainian territory. And yet again, he threatened to use nuclear weapons if Russian territory is in danger. Despite the scary language, Putin is not fooling anybody in NATO. Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg lost no time pointing out that Russia doesn’t have enough weapons to equip more troops. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby immediately said the speech showed Putin was struggling. And at the UN, President Biden denounced Putin’s war. Putin’s biggest problem is that Russia is losing and Ukraine has
