President Joe Biden said on Thursday that a 'tentative' deal has been reached between US freight rail companies and unions, averting a potentially devastating strike before the pivotal midterm elections. The agreement, hashed out as a national rail strike loomed at midnight on Friday, will raise rail employees salaries 24 percent from the period from 2020 to 2024, with workers getting an average lump sum payment of $11,000 for the backdated portion of the raise, according to a group representing rail companies.(Snip)As negotiations between the rail companies and the unions came down to the wire, the White House and Biden's Labor Secretary Martin J. Walsh had stepped in

Somehow there will be "federal money" going to the railroad companies to pay for it all. Certainly that's the case with Amtrak, which cannot function without massive subsidies from the taxpayers.

$11K bonus? 24% raise? Have they increased their productivity by that much? Otherwise this just adds to the inflation fire going on.

Chances are the freight railroads in time will simply lay off enough employees to equalize the additional salary that Biden is forcing them to pay. That’s what usually happens as poop is known to roll down hill. It will be interesting to see if federal money (taxpayers money) will be covertly handed out to the freight railroads to defray their additional expenses with a good percentage actually going to the union bosses.

The 24% proposed pays increase covers 5 years, or 4.9% per year. With Biden’s inflation at 8.3%, and far higher on the basics of life, 4.9% seems inadequate. The $11,000 one time bonus will shrink to approximately $7,500 after withholding, so it’s roughly 12 to 18 months of new car loan payments. Which means the 60,000+ union members may reject the proposal, leading to threats of a strike in October. Biden will give away the Treasury to avoid such an October Surprise.
The inflation Biden’s policies have caused will lead to more union disruptions, more inflationary settlements and likely more work stoppages by health care workers, teachers, municipal unions, airlines and more.

Biden is a hero! Three cheers! We were all going to suffer, but he came in at the last minute and saved the day! Plus the border is secure and inflation has been stopped. What a guy!

Biden caved? Hah! Everything went exactly as planned. Biden bought union votes. It's an election year. I smell a setup. The consumer will get the bill. The dollar will lose more value. Joe gets to yuck it up.
This does not end well folks.

And how is it that this Puke gets to decide this? Isn't spending ANY money a Congressional (Legislative Branch power) which the Executive Branch does NOT HAVE?

The fix was in. I'm only surprised by the fact they didn't wait until Friday to announce the settlement.....you know at the very last minute.
This deal is nothing but another type of "sue and settle" lawsuit that the eco activists use every day.

This is why it is not a good idea to allow government employees to unionize. It puts us under their thumb during national crisis. I wonder how many others it will encourage to do the same.

These are the same guys who pretend to work for big money.
Remember just a few months back when their rail cars were broken into and all sorts of stuff stolen along the Ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach corridor to Los Angeles City?

The union membership should realize that what Biden says as the election approaches may not constitute reality after the election and be very weary of any such Biden deal.

I know someone who is a railroad retiree to the tune of almost $100,000/year and his wife gets a retirement too. I guess he will be getting $124,000/a year in a few years.
