WASHINGTON — Liz Cheney, the Republican congresswoman from Wyoming who has attacked President Donald Trump relentlessly for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection, watched President Joe Biden's Medal of Freedom ceremony from the front row Thursday.(Snip) It's typically unheard of for a Republican lawmaker in the middle of a bruising primary fight to be seen at a high-profile White House event of a Democratic president. But Cheney, vice chair of the committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, is an exception. As she seeks a fourth-term to represent Wyoming's sole seat in Congress, Cheney is at odds

The World Health Organization on Thursday reported a 77% weekly increase in the number of lab-confirmed monkeypox cases, to more than 6,000 worldwide, and two more deaths in parts of Africa where the virus has circulated for years. Most of the cases were reported in Europe and Africa. The U.N. health agency said the mysterious outbreak continues to mainly affect men who have had sex with men, and that other population groups showed no signs of sustained transmission. WHO said it counted 6,027 laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox from 59 countries as of Monday — an increase of 2,614 cases since its

An aide for California Gov. Gavin Newsom, D., publicly criticized an employee of the nonprofit CalMatters after the newsletter writer revealed he was vacationing in Montana despite California’s ban of state-funded travel there. "SCOOP: @GavinNewsom is on vacation in Montana. His office had been loath to disclose the location until now. Montana is one of 22 states to which CA bans state-funded travel due to anti-LGBTQ+ policies. It's also likely to institute an abortion ban. More in tmrw's newsletter," Emily Hoeven wrote. Soon after, Anthony York, a senior communications advisor to Newsom and former journalist, accused Hoeven of "gotcha journalism''

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz weighing in Wednesday on Minneapolis' Fourth of July night of chaos. “The behavior's unacceptable,” said Walz at a press conference. “It is against the law, it's dangerous and as we've seen across the country, we cannot allow these to continue.” Walz says Minneapolis has not requested the Minnesota National Guard to help with policing as has been called for by at least one city councilmember. Walz adds that street racing, carjackings, and crime numbers overall are down since Minneapolis partnered with the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Minnesota State Patrol for help. “We need to

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is spending time with family in Montana — a state on California's list of banned places to travel to using state funds. The Office of the Governor clarified that Newsom did not use state funds for the trip. Montana, along with 22 other states, is banned from travel using state funds because of Montana's anti-LGBT policies. "The travel ban applies to expending state funds," Erin Mellon, communications director for Newsom, told Insider. "The Governor's travel is not being paid for by the state. Connecting the two is irresponsible and falsely implies there is something untoward." Newsom departed

The White House is pushing back against her coach's claim that WNBA player Brittney Griner would be released now from her detainment in Russia if she were a straight man. Asked whether Griner—who is Black, gay and female—is facing a double standard, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre suggested Tuesday that such arguments go against President Joe Biden's many efforts on behalf of minority communities. "This is a president who has put all of the things that you just laid out—the LGBTQ community, women, people of color—he has fought for those communities throughout his career, and

President Biden is finding himself largely powerless to address a spate of setbacks in recent weeks that have sparked alarm among Democrats about the state of the country. Biden has been dealt blow after blow in recent weeks: The Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to an abortion; the country is plagued by gun violence, the latest example falling during an Independence Day parade in suburban Chicago; and rising costs for gasoline, food and other goods have frustrated the public for months. In each case, Biden’s hands are largely tied, frustrating Democrats and contributing to

PORTLAND, Ore. — Dozens of demonstrators gathered in downtown Portland on the night of the 4th of July, smashing windows, shooting off mortars into the federal building and burning an American flag in a protest over the death of Jayland Walker in Ohio. This gathering in Lownsdale Square on the 4th of July coincided with large crowds in downtown Portland for both the Waterfront Blues Fest and the fireworks over the Willamette River. It was labeled a “direct action” march, the same term used in previous demonstrations that turned destructive. Walker, 25, was shot to death June 27 by Akron

Monday’s question of the day seemed to be, “Where is everybody?” That was the common phrase among the few protesters found in front of the Harold K. Stubbs Justice Center in downtown Akron. The recent killing of Jayland Walker, who was shot 60 times by Akron police on Monday, June 27, has sparked days of mostly peaceful but sometimes violent protesting throughout the city. (Snip) That afternoon it seemed like "everybody" was outside of Mayor Dan Horrigan's home. At least 100 armed and unarmed people were at the protest, and at least two of them were arrested.
