President Biden's Energy Department has proposed a new rule that would require homeowners looking to buy a new furnace to install a 95 percent energy-efficient one within the next seven years.
The new rule would require that gas-burning residential furnaces be condensing gas furnaces, which reuse gas and water vapor that normal noncondensing furnaces vent into the atmosphere. It would require that all gas-burning furnaces on the market to be switched over by 2029.(Snip)The Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that the new furnaces will save households about $60 per year, a number that totals $30.3 billion over the next 30 years.

Headline writer didn't get it right; the idea is that the "new and improved" furnaces cost that much more, plus whatever extra installation costs plus the cost of the furnace itself, once they render the old unit obsolete. The HVAC vendors and installers probably aren't crying too much about increased business for no good reason.

I live in a condo complex. I'm sure my landlord will willingly eat the cost of 300 new furnaces without raising the rent!! (/extreme sarcasm)

I just installed a 95% energy efficient gas furnace. Cost me about an additional $1500 plus the cost of larger ducting for a bigger air intake (I am replacing an ancient furnace and ducting as part of a house remodel.) Mine was a “have to” replace - parts were no longer made to fix my old furnace. But you are telling me that the Biden administration is going to require the majority of households to buy a new furnace? This, along with an economic downturn, ridiculously high inflation, and supply line issues - what could possibly go wrong?
You know it will cost much more than they estimate. Will that be blamed on greedy companies as well?

since I recently put in a new AC and Furnace and they're about 95% and spent around 8K at $60 a year my calculator says it will take about 133 years to recoup my cost. This $350 is pure lala land. At 68 I don't see recovering my cost till maybe I'm about 120 years in the grave. Thank you democratic party and our beloved leader(how is that spelled in German....).

I'll ask my son about this. He is an HVAC mechanic/installer. He looks at all kinds of units and always does his best to keep his customers from having to spend the big bucks. He doesn't hard sell folks stuff they don't actually need and will go out of his way to keep old units running. He has a real heart for those on fixed incomes too. This kind of over regulatory crap makes him mad though I am sure HVAC corps love it.

Like all “fuel efficient” heating solutions, you can be sure of one thing: It won’t heat or cool very well.

OP, that's how Democrats roll.
I have a better idea. How about Congress take the rest of the year off, with pay, so they can stop doing more damage.

$350?
Just getting an HVAC guy to your house costs $70 all by itself. That's what you pay just to get him through the door.
So that leaves $280. What is this miraculous modification? Can I just buy the parts, watch a YouTube video, and do the mod myself? Nope.
You can't even buy a $2 igniter and replace that yourself. They won't sell it to you. You have to pay the HVAC guy $70 just to show up for that. How's he supposed to pay his bills if you buy a $2 part and install it youself?

This Biden rule! if it ever becomes effective will raise up the cost of a new furnace for just about all Americans. Remember anytime Biden and his crew get involved with the trappings of private industry, the result is “Jacked Up” prices for the American people.

But isn’t Global Warming gonna destroy life on the planet by 2028 anyway? So why would anybody waste time mandating anything that takes effect after the end of the world? And why would you even need a new heater after Global Warming wipes out civilization as we know it? Who’d be cold at that point? Unless they’re not serious?

One home has a high efficiency furnace now, another has a normal furnace. I'm not changing the one just because this idiot says so.

I have an energy efficient split unit that's 6 years old. It works quite well and I like it. Is it even constitutional for Brandon to do this? Not that it would stop him. 2022 and 2024 can't come fast enough.

Spend many dollars to save a few pennies; Marxist economics in action. We also have to scrap and replace our AC systems every few years as patents expire, and the new ones break down more often and cost a small fortune to fix (thanks, China), which more than erases any savings. So Mr. Republican, which federal departments would you eliminate if you had the chance? "Ummm."
