One minute, Jamil Jutha was driving his 2021 Tesla Model Y through North Vancouver.
The next, he was battling to escape its smoke-filled interior.
The incident took place Friday when the eight-month-old vehicle suddenly shut down, cutting power to all of its electronic parts, according to CTV News.
“The doors wouldn’t open. The windows wouldn’t go down,” Jutha said.
Smoke began to fill the interior. Although Teslas have a mechanical release for emergencies, Jutha said it was not easy to use, particularly amid the panic of a potentially life-threatening incident.

Yeah...so you live in Canada? Where the temperatures in winter can easily go sub-zero Farenheit in winter...and you bought a car that runs off a battery.
And when you want to run the heater or defrost your windows...you have no choice but to draw upon the power of the same battery you rely upon for movement. That's just dumb.

If these fires continue it's just a matter of time before an EV's battery catches fire in a tunnel.

I recall other Tesla catching fire stories, but it's been a while.
What popped into my mind reading this story, was that it's a good thing that he did NOT have a couple of small children securely buckled into their car seats in the rear seat of the car.

The technology has not caught up with reality. Until it does, this sort of thing will continue to happen. What sounds great now, in reality we just aren’t there yet. Wishing can’t make it happen. It comes through innovation, research, and testing and that is a long process. You cannot force it and if you do, this is what you get.

People have been burning cars for insurance for a long time. There's nothing special about Teslas except that they are so expensive people are in greater danger of going underwater on loans.
Get in any car and you are sitting on a big mass of explosive and inflammable substances. Burning gasoline cars are so common they warrant no news reports. A glitch in the fuel injection system is all it takes.

Not uncommon with electric vehicles. Good that the guy go out in time. The production of these EVs does far more damage to the environment than fossil fuel vehicles by far. The battery pack can spontaneously start burning at any time. The mining requires to get the minerals needed is nasty. What a waste of resources!

Energy is energy, what ever the storage medium. a tesla battery is just like a couple jerry cans of gas. the difference is all it takes for the battery to start an uncontrollable fire is a VERY thin sheet of insulator to break down and allow a short. the gas cans have no such possibility

I think I'll stick to my gasoline power little tank...even though it costs over $100 to fill his tank...at least I know what I got...although the new bells and whistles going off drive me crazy...and I find myself talking to the car as he instructs me...what I'm doing wrong...damn new fangled nonsense...I long for the days when I threw the four on the floor into first gear and took off...ah...those were the days...

I'm with #14 - sticking with the tried and true. I love my '96 Cherokee that features crank windows, manual door locks and big untinted windows for clear views all around. It also has an ashtray and cigarette lighter. Heat and AC work great. One of the best features is the "check engine" light is busted - I haven't seen it in years. The dash board at night is very simple; the lights for the instruments still work but have burned out on the climate slides, and only the radio buttons light up - even the clock/station display can't be read at night. Reliable beyond belief and I make sure she gets her regular service. She just turned 313,000 miles. I bought at 118,000.
Whenever I have to drive TK's 2017 Grand Cherokee I feel like I'm sitting in the cockpit of a 747.

The driver in the video, says he spent $90,000 on that new 2021 car! Uhm, that's a bit out of my price range.
I understand that there exists an emergency exit handle on the door but apparently the owner hadn't read the manual.
It's worth noting that our reliance on electricity automobiles has made it more likely for people to drown in vehicles when they drive into a body of water. Should always have a glass breaker attached to an easy to get to spot in the cabin.
I'd like to know what it is the Fire Crew uses to extinguish that fire. Using a smallish hose from which a thin stream of liquid emerges and puts out the blaze. Pouring water on a Lithium fire will only make it far worse.

And, spraying a water hose on a very high amperage electrical power source... Want to think that through? Do I have to explain why that's a bad idea to anyone?

Not only do these lithium batteries just burst into flames at random intervals, but they are nearly impossible to extinguish. No thanks.
I've been driving gasoline powered cars since the middle 60s, millions of miles, and never had one go up in flames on me.
