Vladimir Putin told the President of Finland he is making a 'mistake' by joining NATO as it faces 'no security threats' in a phone call this morning. And in a speech on the 80th day of the war in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: 'The collective West has announced a total hybrid war on us. 'It is difficult to forecast how long this will all last, but it is clear that the consequences will be felt by everybody without exception.'Finland and Sweden's efforts to join NATO met a hurdle when Turkish President Erdogan said he could not support their entry bids because of Kurdish terrorist organisations operating

Most concerning is Stoltenberg's assertion that NATO has responsibility for global security. Thank you, General...it's time for the US to withdraw from this entanglement in European affairs. NATO is the USA fronting for everyone else. As noted, Turkey fields the second-largest military in NATO. Think they are going to confront the Chinese, for example? The Iranians or NoKors? It's time for Europe to assume its own defense without the Article 5 guarantees that entrap the US.

A bunch of geriatric ret@rds are going to slow walk us in to a completely avoidable war. No winners, only losers and these fools will thump their chests while killing untold numbers of people. NOT them and their inbred kids though!

Wish all these countries, including ours, would stop poking The Bear. If Putin does have leukemia he has maybe less than a year to live. Facing death he might be inclined to use his nukes. In the past our best defense was the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They can't stop ICBMs. OK, I'm a wuss. I'd like to die of natural causes.

I wonder what percentage of nato’s budget that is owed by the non-US members is actually paid by those members. Much less than 100% paid by the non-US members would lead me to conclude that they are just along for the ride.
Since no reason for this nato aggression- putting weapons/nukes in Ukraine as an incident of Ukraine’s nato membership- has ever been presented to the US public- other than “putin is a war criminal” as asserted by same people who said george bush and dick cheney were war criminals- i have to wonder What is the reason? Is there one?
I have seen interviews where it has been asserted that the Atlantic and Pacific are swarming with Russian subs that can deliver nukes to our cities in 1 minute. Maybe we need nukes in Ukraine to counter that. ?????
Personally I’d rather keep the status quo in Europe rather than risk nuclear war this year. Absent a really solid reason.
Too much to ask of whoever is driving this. Apparently the Deep State is since no leader has put forth any coherent reason for it. Obviously no citizen can be of informed approval.

Given his recent military successes, I'm not so sure that Mr. Putin should be threatening a tough country like Finland.

The Finns have defeated the Russians in war previously. I suspect that they can do it again, if need be. The Russian military is already seriously stretched thin by fighting in Ukraine. It would be extremely foolish for them to invade Finland, too.

Well, isn't that just dandy? Back to proxy wars, but not really a proxy nation for the Russkies.
#3 might consider that in the event of a global nuclear exchange, the people near the targets could wind up being vaporized almost instantly. That sounds like less suffering than most forms of "natural causes".

The nuclear threats are getting old. Nobody is going to do anything remotely close to justifying a first use nuclear strike. And mutually assured destruction is still a thing.
Besides, bluffing with nukes is the mark of a second rate power. It sounds tinny. It's Kim Jung Un-level bush league stuff.

An alien looking down from his space craft on this chaotic world would easily come to the conclusion that humans are insane, especially the old ones. Threatening to use nukes is an irrational threat made by someone who has lost the ability to understand what he is unleashing.

Russia already invade Norway and got their @ss kicked and they left with their tail between their legs, much like what's happening in Ukraine. Hitler would have also beat Russia had hew not tried to fight a 2 front war. Russia has nukes that about the extent of their power. they won't use them because they know it means their annihilation too.

Re #9. Yes, but which is it? "someone who has lost the ability to understand what he is unleashing." or someone old and sick who doesn't much care if he destroys the world that he will be leaving soon, regardless?
If Putin is actually terminally ill, still a big if, but he has shown significant signs of illness, he may not care in the slightest what sort of mayhem he brings down on the rest of us. The "suicide vest" syndrome expanded to a national or international scale.

#11, that is a familiar refrain. But and old, sick man who doesn't care if everybody dies would likely not have cared enough to invade Ukraine in the first place.
If he is unconcerned with wiping out Russian culture in a nuclear holocause, then it isn't likely he actually was afraid of Ukraine joining a neighborhood watch.
This also begs the question of why a NATO country on Russia's border is threatening to a country with 6000 nuclear warheads. Those warheads means that Russia cannot ever be invaded or conqured. It has absolute immunity to either conventional or nuclear attack.
So no. I'm not buying the state security line. It is BS.

it is not "begging the question".
the Russians have been paranoid since the mongols turks french and germans invaded.
just why do you think they have 6000 nukes?

NATO Is a defensive alliance that is not about to attack Russia, Putin knows that, and also knows what happened the last time Russia (USSR) invaded Finland. Putin also knows that a bunch of nuclear weapons being detonated in Western Europe are bound to saturate Russia with a massive dose of radioactive fallout and that’s after the NATO retaliatory nuclear strikes occurred that would destroy most of Russia.

Re #10, I think you are thinking about Finland, not Norway. AFAIK, Russia has never invaded Norway. Germany invaded Norway in WW2, and Russia invaded Finland and was repulsed in The Winter War.

Russia had dreams of expansion and have discovered they aren't working out well. Now they are desperately trying to save face. They were supposed to beat up and conquer Ukraine and leave the rest of Europe shaking in their shoes. That has not happened.

#14 - NATO Is a defensive alliance...wasn't that way in 1992, when NATO involved itself in the Balkan/Yugoslav war using the UN Security Council for cover. I don't recall Milosevic invading any Article 5 country. Now, what NATO country has Russia invaded this time? Suppose Russia, China, NoKor, and Iran signed a "defensive" treaty...would that concern you? Given the American history of intervention, and now Stoltenberg's statement, I could understand their trepidation.

There's no logic in war. Putin, Xi Ping, and Kim Un will attack and even launch a nuclear missile when their backs are pushed against the wall. Emotion takes over and passion drives them to do the unthinkable. Remember Pearl Harbor? Japan knew from the beginning, that it was a war they cannot win. They were cornered, they attacked, got nuked, they lost, people suffered, and became a Dove.
