MTA workers collected more than a $1 billion
in OT pay in 2021: report

New York—The Metropolitan Transportation Authority shelled out more than $1 billion in overtime pay to its employees last year, according to payroll data released Friday. More than 300 workers collected at least $100,000 in overtime, four of whom pocketed more than $200,000, records show. Approximately 700 earned more in overtime than their regular salary, according to the data posted on SeeThroughNewYork, the Empire Center’s government transparency website.(Snip)The MTA forked over a record-high $1.38 billion in overtime pay in 2018, which lead to a series of investigations and criminal charges, officials said. MTA Chief Operating Officer Lisette Camilo said the agency continues to reduce and manage overtime spending.

Comments:

NYC allows mass overtime fraud with a wink and a nod, knowing that "federal funding" is always on tap to protect New Yorkers from paying for it. Example, damage caused by Superstorm Sandy was covered using "federal money," even though MTA left new trains exactly where its own Climate Change survey maps said would flood. And NYC MTA got at least $14.5 billion in federal "covid relief" money, which covers the entire bill for overtime many times over.

Or this: Of the $8 billion in federal grant money that went to the MTA after Sandy, We the People bought $1.5 million worth of pump trucks for the MTA, with a healthy share of that no doubt going to graft. The trucks sit idle and unmaintained (because that costs money), no one is trained to use them (because that costs money), and the trucks sat idle during Hurricane Ida, which caused millions of dollars in damages from flooding, the costs probably also paid for by We the People because NYC mass transit somehow matters to the lesser 49. https://nypost.com/2021/09/20/mta-flood-pumps-from-1-5m-sandy-grant-havent-been-used-ig-says/

If memory serves me, the MTA pension plan lets people retire using final year earnings in the formula. (Defined benefit plan pension) And there is an informal SOP where the person within one year of retirement, gets all the overtime he or she can handle. That, in turn, results in many MTA employees retiring with a higher pension payment each year that is a lot higher than their regular salary. The MTA is a multi-state agency, and like other multi state agencies, no one seems to be in charge.

second post apologies, but,#6, to offer some information on defined benefit plans, they usually work like this - The employer promises to have a defined benefit plan, with the worker, at retirement, receiving a pension payment that is computed by using an average of the hign three years earnings of the final five years of work, with an X% multiple, and total years of service. And some DB plans exclude overtime pay completely.

The banner year for corn may not be what it's cracked up to be. Brandon Fast says it used to cost him $250 a wheel to replace the tires on his 18-wheeler on his farm near Mountain Lake. Now, that price is nearly double—just one reason he's not yet celebrating the near-historic $8-a-bushel-and-up corn prices popping up at some ethanol plants and grain elevators throughout southwestern Minnesota. "It's almost one step forward, two steps back at this point," said Fast, a corn farmer who also runs a seed and chemical business, on Thursday. One of Washington’s goals in responding to the Ukraine crisis is to erode Russia’s ability to carry out future military actions akin to the now three-month-old invasion of Ukraine, Defense Secretary of State Lloyd Austin said Monday upon returning from a stealth visit to Kyiv. “We want to see Russia weakened to the degree that it can’t do the kinds of things that it has done in invading Ukraine,” Mr. Austin told reporters in Poland, where he and Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived early Monday after traveling by train to the Ukrainian capital. Multiple US airlines are now so desperate for staff that they've swapped planes for buses on some shorter routes. Several carriers, including American Airlines have hired coach companies to carry passengers when the distances are small. American will bus people between Philadelphia and between multiple other airports that would only be a short hop away by air. The service will start June 3 between Philadelphia International and airports in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Atlantic City, New Jersey with the bus company called Landline. Meanwhile, United is offering one-stop connectivity to both Fort Collins and Breckenridge, with four daily buses from Denver to the former and just one to the latter.
