Crime, not COVID, killed my retail business

Original Article

When I first opened my shoe store last year, I thought that small businesses had made it through the worst. Both in Minnesota and across the nation, COVID-19 cases were starting to drop, and a sense of normalcy was slowly returning. But a new epidemic destroyed my business in just a few months: retail theft. Despite investing thousands of dollars into my store in Little Canada—which included state-of-the-art security measures—I became victim to a spree of brazen burglaries that saddled my family with mounting debt. In just six months, five robberies alone have cost me $30,000 worth of merchandise and caused me to close

Comments:

Traditionally it's the government and the Federal Reserve that steal from people. Are they OK with smash-and-grab robbers encroaching on their turf, especially since they don't pay taxes?

At some point it's not worth even trying to run a business near a big, bad city. This man's store was not even in 'the hood' but one of those older, inner-ring suburbs which are now going downhill fast.

FTA: Lawmakers in Washington are now considering legislation that aims to clamp down on retail theft by requiring online marketplaces to collect and verify basic seller information. Or, cities/counties could prosecute thieves accused of retail theft of any dollar amount.

My son worked for Journey's shoes, out of the Nashville Corporate headquarters...last year was a record setting year both in store and online. He was VERY happy to have moved there after having run their NYC/New Jersey stores where there had been a loooong history of local thefts...One of the recent mass shootings in a New Jersey Mall took place right outside his old store.

Crime is another check mark adding to inflation. "Just let insurance pay for it" ... after a theft premiums generally go up for the company / store / shop. Well, companies and stores and shops don't pay those higher premiums. Consumers do. Through higher prices (i.e. inflation).

President Joe Biden’s latest speech, it appears, was one for the birds. It was difficult to miss what appeared to be the projectile of avian fecal matter that scored a direct hit on the president’s left lapel. Although, after much mockery, the White House has given clarification on the supposed flying mystery substance that many aren’t buying.
