Putin's Failure

Original Article

Putin rolled the dice of war and didn’t beat Ukraine. This, in strategic terms, probably means he lost the campaign. In retrospect the Kremlin’s plan consisted of an airborne/airmobile/Spetsnaz descent on Kyiv whose mission was to establish an airhead in the capital and capture the Ukrainian government until relieved by mechanized forces racing in from the north. An airmobile assault was attempted at Gostomel to Kyiv’s immediate But things went badly wrong. The Russian battalion-sized airmobile force met stiff air defense and was immediately counterattacked by the Ukrainian mobile reserve. Unable to land follow-on forces, the paratroopers could not withstand heavy weapons and were scattered or wiped out. Equally serious.

WTH???? Putin has just started. This war has been going on for what -- 4 days? Putin has unlimited troops and tons of far superior weaponry. The Ukrainians are throwing everything they have against the Russians to slow down their initial thrust. But Russia can play this game much longer and much more ruthlessly for however long it takes. When Ukraine exhausts their anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons, and the Russians turn up the intensity of bombing by 10 or 20 times -- massive bombardments, destruction of massive infrastructure, and targeted killings of civilians -- they will win. The Ukrainians have decent troops and a limited supply of weaponry. And they are fighting for their homeland, which gives them the adrenalin rush of national pride. But, in the end (which will be sooner than later), it won't be enough.

Pray that Ukraine becomes Russia's next Afghanistan. The loss of life is very sad, but it would mean the end of Adolph Putin.

I hope that Wretchard has this right. Sounds pretty reasonable. Russia has a thin capability, and apparently very "brittle", too. They cannot take a shock without shattering. Weak logistical support, too.

I believe part of Ukraine’s strategy is to get the support of the world behind them. Of course, it is not a fair fight. Putin thought it would be a cake walk and it is not. He knows he is going to have to get very nasty and he will but the cost will be very high. I pray that Ukraine can hold on and continue to garner support from around the world. Putin has forever sullied the imagine he created for himself as being a reasonable and somewhat affable leader of Russia. Now the world sees him for what he is, a cruel, vicious dictator with visions of restoring Russia to its glory days. Even his own people are protesting against him. Unfortunately, Putin will do whatever it takes to claim the victory and I believe this will turn vicious soon. He will use any means to win. Pray for Ukraine. The vacuum created by Biden’s morally, mentally, and physically unfit failure to lead is stunningly obvious. This is exactly when evil tyrants always step in.

I used to think Putin was smart but he's just another stupid commie. He lost the war when he started it. History has proven over and over that you may be able to take a country but you can't hold it. In this case he hasn't even taken it. RU may still take the country but over time they will pay to hold it with a lot of blood and Putin will be over thrown before its all over.

FTA, the very last sentence - "The crisis in Ukraine, while not over, is likely to evolve into a crisis in Russia. We shall soon see who is more to be feared: a Putin in Kyiv or a Putin raging in the bunker." It is way too early to know which Putie will emerge from his invasion of Ukraine. He isn't stupid and is all-in against very weak international leaders including our own. I don't get the sense that his military of 19 year-old kids drunk on alcohol or high on cocaine are all that motivated. His fire power is only as good as his troops are who will be ordered to pull the trigger. If the world and his own country turn fully against Putie, he may end up like Muammar Ghaddafi and Saddam Hussein.

On the eve of President Biden’s first State of the Union address, Monday, the broadcast networks previewed his big speech and each took a different approach, with ABC lamenting that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “forced” Biden to change his speech and CBS touting a fence around the Capitol. NBC was the outlier that showed Biden’s new terrible poll numbers from… ABC! “And Mary, the President and his team forced to rework parts of this speech in light of this Russian invasion,” ABC’s World News Tonight anchor David Muir huffed as he directed his question to senior White House correspondent Mary Bruce. “I'm curious what your sources are telling you tonight
Why Russia is highly unlikely to use nuclear weapons 0 replies

As Russia struggles to conquer Ukraine, Vladimir Putin has moved his strategic nuclear forces to a heightened alert posture. Satellite imagery also indicates that the Russian Northern Fleet has moved more ballistic missile submarines into Arctic and Barents sea patrol sectors. While U.S. nuclear forces remain at standard readiness levels, the U.S. military has a greater baseline readiness and redundant nuclear strike capability than does Russia. I suspect the ultimate intent of Putin's public nuclear threat is to dangle the risk of escalation so as to deter Western unity on further sanctions.

Nearly all Senate Democrats voted in favor of a bill that would allow doctors nationwide to terminate fetuses nine months into a pregnancy. The Senate on Monday failed to advance the most pro-abortion bill in history, the Women's Health Protection Act, which would codify Roe v. Wade to repeal all abortion restrictions across the nation. The bill states that doctors could abort babies at any point in a pregnancy if they determine a continuation "would pose a risk to the pregnant patient's life or health." The bill was never expected to pass the 60-vote threshold to advance to a vote, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) faced pressure from pro-abortion activists and more liberal members

Since Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Western Europe has solidified around the idea that allowing Putin to get away with this outrage is only a prelude to more outrageous conduct in the future. The result has been some of the most serious sanctions imposed on any national bad-actor in recent memory. What is more stunning is that Europe has led the way, while Joe Biden was slurping down applesauce in Delaware. What surprised me was how Western Europe, particularly Germany, stepped up with promises of lethal military aid to Ukraine. Several nations announced they were drawing down the war stocks of their own militaries
Biden’s Dismal State of the Union Address Prospects 2 replies

Most State of the Union speeches are forgettable events, where presidents simply lay out their laundry list of desired policies within a highly unedifying cliche-to-substance ratio. But once in a while a State of the Union speech actually matters, and such is the case with President Biden’s address tomorrow night. First, most SotU speeches run an hour or more. Can Biden actually make it that long? But much more important is the substance of the speech. Most SotU addresses start taking shape in the fall, around Thanksgiving. I have previously speculated that the late date of Biden’s first SotU (they are usually in late January or early February, when the president submits

New sanctions and economic restrictions aimed at Russia were announced by the US and other countries while the poll was in the field on Friday and Saturday. The Ukraine War scenes of Russian soldiers crying in shame and main battle tanks abandoned due to lack of fuel tell the story of a war gone seriously wrong for Russian strongman Vladimir Putin. Scenes like these aren’t uncommon: “Amateurs study strategy,” the old saw goes. “Professionals study logistics.” The “reformed” Russian Army can’t get its Ukraine War logistics straight, can’t keep their vehicles fueled. What a bunch of amateurs. This next clip is heart-wrenching. It’s a captured Russian soldier crying after being told by locals that he isn’t welcome in Ukraine.

The government of Turkey changed its view of Russia’s attack on Ukraine over the weekend, declaring the assault is “officially a war,” which activated certain clauses in a treaty that allows Turkey to restrict access to the Black Sea through the Dardanelles and Bosporus Straits. On Monday afternoon, Turkey announced it will forbid the passage of all warships through the straits. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday to close the straits to Russian warships. An excited Zelensky immediately announced Erdogan agreed to the request: Turkish officials had previously disagreed, saying Erdogan had not yet made any decision “to close the straits to Russian ships yet.”

At least eleven civilians have died and dozens of others were wounded as the Russians targeted the city on Monday morning, per Ukrainian officials. The shelling was reportedly aimed at residential areas and included the use of cluster munitions, which release submunitions or bomblets considered especially dangerous to civilians since they are difficult to confine to a specific target.

However, the evil geniuses within the Democrat party have identified the Fourteenth Amendment as a vehicle to thwart Republican dreams of achieving a massive political realignment. Therefore, it may be shortsighted to count the one-time party of Jefferson as down-and-out until the last glimmering frenzy has been extinguished. I’m having a problem using the president’s formal title and name together. It’s not a matter of Republican disrespect for a Democrat. I referred to both Barack Obama and Bill Clinton by their presidential titles. It’s a matter of legitimacy. Over half of all Americans now believe that fraud affected the outcome of the last Presidential election. The Arizona election audit didn’t prove that the Donald won, as many hoped. But it did prove that we don’t really know who won that state. Given the election shenanigans around the country in November 2020, there is certainly justification to question the outcome.
