Putin rolled the dice of war and didn’t beat Ukraine. This, in strategic terms, probably means he lost the campaign. In retrospect the Kremlin’s plan consisted of an airborne/airmobile/Spetsnaz descent on Kyiv whose mission was to establish an airhead in the capital and capture the Ukrainian government until relieved by mechanized forces racing in from the north. An airmobile assault was attempted at Gostomel to Kyiv’s immediate But things went badly wrong. The Russian battalion-sized airmobile force met stiff air defense and was immediately counterattacked by the Ukrainian mobile reserve. Unable to land follow-on forces, the paratroopers could not withstand heavy weapons and were scattered or wiped out. Equally serious.

WTH???? Putin has just started. This war has been going on for what -- 4 days?
Putin has unlimited troops and tons of far superior weaponry. The Ukrainians are throwing everything they have against the Russians to slow down their initial thrust. But Russia can play this game much longer and much more ruthlessly for however long it takes. When Ukraine exhausts their anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons, and the Russians turn up the intensity of bombing by 10 or 20 times -- massive bombardments, destruction of massive infrastructure, and targeted killings of civilians -- they will win.
The Ukrainians have decent troops and a limited supply of weaponry. And they are fighting for their homeland, which gives them the adrenalin rush of national pride. But, in the end (which will be sooner than later), it won't be enough.

Pray that Ukraine becomes Russia's next Afghanistan. The loss of life is very sad, but it would mean the end of Adolph Putin.

Seems early to arrive at these conclusions, but I hope Fernandez is proven to be right. Humble pie is highly foreign to Putin's palate.

I hope that Wretchard has this right. Sounds pretty reasonable.
Russia has a thin capability, and apparently very "brittle", too. They cannot take a shock without shattering. Weak logistical support, too.

I believe part of Ukraine’s strategy is to get the support of the world behind them. Of course, it is not a fair fight. Putin thought it would be a cake walk and it is not. He knows he is going to have to get very nasty and he will but the cost will be very high. I pray that Ukraine can hold on and continue to garner support from around the world. Putin has forever sullied the imagine he created for himself as being a reasonable and somewhat affable leader of Russia. Now the world sees him for what he is, a cruel, vicious dictator with visions of restoring Russia to its glory days. Even his own people are protesting against him. Unfortunately, Putin will do whatever it takes to claim the victory and I believe this will turn vicious soon. He will use any means to win. Pray for Ukraine. The vacuum created by Biden’s morally, mentally, and physically unfit failure to lead is stunningly obvious. This is exactly when evil tyrants always step in.

I used to think Putin was smart but he's just another stupid commie. He lost the war when he started it. History has proven over and over that you may be able to take a country but you can't hold it. In this case he hasn't even taken it. RU may still take the country but over time they will pay to hold it with a lot of blood and Putin will be over thrown before its all over.

FTA, the very last sentence - "The crisis in Ukraine, while not over, is likely to evolve into a crisis in Russia. We shall soon see who is more to be feared: a Putin in Kyiv or a Putin raging in the bunker."
It is way too early to know which Putie will emerge from his invasion of Ukraine. He isn't stupid and is all-in against very weak international leaders including our own. I don't get the sense that his military of 19 year-old kids drunk on alcohol or high on cocaine are all that motivated. His fire power is only as good as his troops are who will be ordered to pull the trigger. If the world and his own country turn fully against Putie, he may end up like Muammar Ghaddafi and Saddam Hussein.
