A jury in Florida has acquitted a retired police SWAT commander of murder for fatally shooting a fellow moviegoer during an argument over cellphone use. Deliberations in the trial began Friday, and the jury returned its verdict late that night. Defense attorneys contended that retired Tampa police Capt. Curtis Reeves feared for his life when he pulled his gun and shot Chad Oulson in the 2014 movie theater altercation. The prosecutor told jurors during closing arguments that Reeves killed Oulson because he threw popcorn in his face during the confrontation

This was a needless killing. But the government lawyers did not make a strong enough effort in pushing back on the self-defense arguments. Reeves could have moved, and his own wife said she considered that option. He did not need to egg on Oulson (who acted like an entitled bratty teenager). Of course that is my opinion. Reeves won because his lawyers made the better case. But both sides here acted badly. Reeves had decades of high level law enforcement experience - and this is the only time he felt threatened enough to pull a weapon on someone? Witnesses on both sides, especially family members, had every reason to shade their testimony to sound more favorable. IMO this was a most unsatisfying case. The gunshot mangled a finger on the widow's hand. What did Reeves possibly think to justify shooting in such close quarters? All of that said, I do think Reeves and his wife should expect to watch a movie without the distraction of a cell phone. But the movie hadn't started yet when he asked (told?) Oulson to turn off his phone. Reeves waited only a few seconds before going off to get the manager. Very frustrating case. Ramona (the Pest)

Sometimes an opinion pops into my head that I know probably isn’t going to go over very well with some of the readers here at RedState, but hey, what kind of writer would I be if I was that easily swayed? So, if you disagree with what I’m about to say, live and let die on this one, and our minds will meet back up on the next one. And on that note, the American trucker convoy headed toward Washington, D.C., to disrupt Joe Biden’s State of the Union address is a really bad idea. I know, I know, but hear me out. No doubt, I was a strong supporter of the Freedom Convoy in Canada.

Swiss President Ignazio Cassis said on Sunday that it was “very probable” that neutral Switzerland would follow the European Union (EU) on Monday in sanctioning Russia and freezing Russian assets in the Alpine country. Cassis, interviewed on French-language Swiss public television, said that the seven-member Federal Council would meet on Monday and review recommendations by the departments of finance and economy. Asked whether Switzerland -- a major financial centre and commodities trading hub -- would follow the EU in freezing
Belarus votes to give up non-nuclear status 9 replies

Voters in Belarus have approved constitutional reforms that will allow the country to host nuclear weapons at a time when the former Soviet republic has become a launchpad for Russian troops invading Ukraine. Russian news agencies on Monday cited the Belarusian elections commission as saying that some 65.2 percent of people who took part in a referendum voted in favour of the change. The agencies said voter turnout stood at 78.63 percent. The result came as little surprise, given the tightly controlled rule of President Alexander Lukashenko. It could bring nuclear weapons back on Belarusian soil for the first time since the country gave them up after the fall of the Soviet Union
Russia's nuclear weapons threat raises

Russia's violent invasion of Ukraine has upped Western fears of a potential nuclear conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday ordered his country's deterrence forces, including nuclear weapons, be put on higher alert, citing so-called threats from the West as Moscow continues to push into Ukraine.   A senior United States defense official said on Sunday of Putin's order, "It's clearly, essentially, putting in play forces that, if there's a miscalculation, could make things much, much more dangerous."   The official also told reporters the U.S. has "no reason" to doubt Putin's new order, which they called "unnecessary" and "escalatory."
Ukraine invasion: Would Putin press the
nuclear button?

Let me begin with an admission. So many times, I've thought: "Putin would never do this." Then he goes and does it. "He'd never annex Crimea, surely?" He did. "He'd never start a war in the Donbas." He did. "He'd never launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine." He has. I've concluded that the phrase "would never do" doesn't apply to Vladimir Putin. And that raises an uncomfortable question: "He'd never press the nuclear button first. Would he?" It's not a theoretical question. Russia's leader has just put his country's nuclear forces on "special" alert, complaining of "aggressive statements" over Ukraine by Nato leaders. Listen closely to what President Putin has been saying.

Ukrainian officials have published dozens of videos of what they say are captured Russian soldiers, as the brutal fighting in Ukraine enters its fourth day. In one of the videos, published early on Sunday morning on the Telegram channel Find Your Own, set up by Ukraine’s interior ministry, a visibly injured soldier identifies himself as Leonid Paktishev, the commander of a sniper unit based in the Rostov region. The Telegram channel, which first went live on Saturday, has posted numerous videos and photos showing captured Russian troops, which have led to an outcry from their families who say they were shocked to find out about the involvement of their loved ones

Russian forces are reportedly becoming demoralised, disoriented and hungry on the third day of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. A senior United States official told ABC News that Russian soldiers had been overheard complaining that Ukrainian resistance was much stiffer than they had anticipated. On one radio call, the official said they heard a soldier saying: “We don’t know who to shoot – they all look like us.” A resident in the western city of Lviv told inews.co.uk that Russian soldiers “don’t know why they are on our land”. Constantine Yevtushenko told the news site soldiers were hungry, were running low on supplies, and were confused

I’m heartbroken. Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has unsettled me in a way that even the life-changing COVID-19 pandemic hadn’t. I lived in the Ukrainian capital from 2004 to 2006 – two of the best years of my journalism career and two very happy years of my life. I ran The Associated Press' Kyiv bureau, having arrived there from my previous AP reporting job in Moscow. My Ukrainian colleagues became good friends. They were patient with my often stumbling Russian and my endless questions. Even the camo-wearing, gun-toting guard who responded to our office alarm every time I accidentally tripped it when working too early, or too late, was kind. Weekends, I explored Kyiv.

President Joe Biden's handling of the economy is dragging down Democrats' hopes in the midterm elections just as he prepares to deliver his first State of the Union address and grapples with the war in Ukraine, according to a new poll. The ABC- and Washington Post-commissioned survey gets worse for the Democrats deeper into the crosstabs. Three-fourths of Americans say the economy is in bad shape, and 6 in 10 say they are feeling the brutal boot of inflation — now at a 40-year high. A paltry 17% say they are better off under Biden. And Republicans have a staggering 20-point lead among voters asked which party can best steer the economy

As the midterm 2022 elections approach, the expectation is that, with thirty Democrat House retirements and the continued unraveling of the Biden Administration, the Dems are about to experience historic losses in both the House and Senate. However, the evil geniuses within the Democrat party have identified the Fourteenth Amendment as a vehicle to thwart Republican dreams of achieving a massive political realignment. Therefore, it may be shortsighted to count the one-time party of Jefferson as down-and-out until the last glimmering frenzy has been extinguished. In 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment was amended to add Section 3, also known as the Disqualification Clause.

Washington—Nearly half of the 500 million free COVID-19 tests the Biden administration recently made available to the public still have not been claimed as virus cases plummet and people feel less urgency to test. Wild demand swings have been a subplot in the pandemic, from vaccines to hand sanitizer, along with tests. On the first day of the White House test giveaway in January, COVIDtests.gov received over 45 million orders. I’m having a problem using the president’s formal title and name together. It’s not a matter of Republican disrespect for a Democrat. I referred to both Barack Obama and Bill Clinton by their presidential titles. It’s a matter of legitimacy. Over half of all Americans now believe that fraud affected the outcome of the last Presidential election. The Arizona election audit didn’t prove that the Donald won, as many hoped. But it did prove that we don’t really know who won that state. Given the election shenanigans around the country in November 2020, there is certainly justification to question the outcome.
