Putin’s Predictabilities

For all his caginess, dissimulation, and opportunism, Vladimir Putin is more or less predictable. Putin’s aims? The Russian president’s two-decade dilemma has been how to reclaim the prestige and power of the former Soviet Union—(snip) First, Putin moves on neighboring former Soviet republics when the world price of oil is high, and his coffers are full. So he went into Georgia in 2008 and into Eastern Ukraine and Crimea in 2014 (snip) But when the world is awash in oil, prices dip, and the United States reigns as the largest gas and oil producer, he hesitates. So he remained static between 2017 and 2020.

And it is because Russia is nothing more than a giant gas can. All Russia brings to the world table is oil & gas. Russia contributes nothing else but corruption. No technology advancements, no medical breakthroughs no new intellectual property. Just oil & gas. Europe, try collapsing the ruble, exclude Russia from the Swift System and the US dollar, and see if that gets Putie's attention. BiteMe, you might give this a try, too.

Putin has exposed NATO for what it is and had been for years, a hollow Maginot Line alliance that is wholly dependent on the US for any tooth. The effete Euros can hardly field a military force, let alone one of any fearsomeness. They're not interested in doing do, and not afraid of the Russians so long as the US is there to do the jawboning and heavy lifting. When trouble arises the Germans hide behind "Nazis", and none of the rest add anything of value. Add these other minor countries and former Warsaw Pact members and it further weakens this alliance. Let's not even mention the Canadians...invisible in all this "crisis", busy crushing "democracy" at home, much like the US has been doing over the past few years. NATO is one of those "perpetual alliances" that George Washington warned about 220 years ago. Maintaining membership invariably involves us in those "European intrigues" that GW also warned to avoid. But, the US is the "Leader of the Free World", whether anyone is following with much more than lip service, or not. Indeed, we have been the Leader of the Free Loaders since the demise of the Soviet Union 30 years ago. Time for the Euros to shape up and defend themselves and their continental interests without the US providing the manpower and equipment. PDT wanted out of NATO. Time for his desire to come true.

VDH credits the price of oil and gas during Trump's presidency as restraining Putin between 2017 and 2020. While O&G economics may have played a significant role, I think it was Trump's well-founded unwillingness to advocate bringing Ukraine and Georgia into NATO. Now I never praise Trump because it's popular here to do so but on the subject of Ukraine and NATO, I think he was very prescient and wise. I also believe that Putin stayed his hand, not because he feared a Trump military response but because a major irritant (Ukraine/NATO) was taken off the table by Trump. The push for Ukraine in NATO started under Bill Clinton and was advocated by Hillary as SoS under the Obama administration. Putin had to be well aware of the degradation of the U. S. military under eight years of Obama and that Trump did not have support in the House to do much to re-build our degraded military. Putin most likely figured Trump would be re-elected in 2020, thus no hasty military invasion of Ukraine was needed. No one looking at a globe and with any knowledge of history can fault Putin for trying to prevent a Ukraine/NATO scenario any more than a sane US president would be tolerant if Mexico allowed a Russian military presence in Tamaulipas or one of the other northern states of Mexico, snugged up to our border. Biden is clearly not sane and the U. S. has no long-standing cultural, political, economic, or military ties to Ukraine but Russia does.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Feb. 25 drastically changed a key measure that is used by officials across the country to determine whether or not to require mask-wearing. The federal agency now says nearly three-quarters of Americans don’t need to wear masks because they live in areas with low or medium community risk from COVID-19. The dramatic switch comes because the CDC switched from only using COVID-19 cases as a factor and are taking into account other metrics, including hospitalizations. “This updated approach focuses on directing our prevention efforts toward protecting people at high risk for severe ailments and preventing hospitals and healthcare systems from being overwhelmed,”

Political leaders in the US, Canada, Germany, and France – all NATO countries – got back on script yesterday. They could not wait to get to the microphones. As Russian bombs rained down on Ukriane, Western leaders – having spent the better part of two years bullying their citizens and quelling protests – spoke in soaring tones about freedom, democracy, peace, and human rights.
