Josh Hawley rejected President Joe Biden’s nominee for the U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of New York Nina Morrison during Wednesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. Hawley led by grilling Morrison on the skyrocketing crime rates across the country, noting that St. Louis, Missouri, saw the “highest murder rate in 50 years” in 2020. Hawley pointed out that in a December 2019 article co-written by Morrison about wrongful convictions and “tough-on-crime practices,” she praised St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner and asked if the nominee remembered doing so.

This lawyer’s work in freeing innocent people who have been wrongly convicted is very admirable, but her support for radical reform of the criminal justice system disqualifies her from being an impartial judge. She should remain an outstanding advocate for the people who needed her advocacy skills.
