President Joe Biden described events now underway in Ukraine as "the beginning of a Russian invasion" as he unveiled new sanctions to punish Moscow on Tuesday.
He laid out what he called a "first tranche" of US sanctions against Russia for its moves, including on two financial institutions, Russian sovereign debt and — starting Wednesday — on Russian elites and their family members.
Biden also announced he was moving additional troops and equipment to "strengthen" US allies in Europe, but made clear they would not be there to "fight Russia."
The President held out the possibility that diplomacy could still defuse the crisis, and said the US would remain open to talking

I wrote on Monday night how the “chickens of weakness had come home to roost for Joe Biden,” when it came to Russia and Ukraine. Joe Biden has done everything but physically bend over and say, “Thank you, sir, may I have another?” in his relationship with Vladimir Putin.
Even after Putin issued a declaration recognizing Donetsk and Luhansk, two regions of Ukraine, as independent nations — a prelude to invasion — Biden’s response was weak in the extreme. He said that they would prohibit Americans from trading in those two regions. A senior administration official even said that units moving into the area might not be enough to trigger

German chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Tuesday that his government will halt the certification process for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in response to Russia’s recognition of two separatist Ukrainian enclaves.
Nord Stream 2, which is controlled by a subsidiary of Russia’s state-owned energy corporation Gazprom, is completed and filled with gas but has not yet come online. Germany had expected to double imports of natural gas from Russia via the pipeline.
However, “the situation today is fundamentally different,” Scholz told reporters. “That is why we must re-evaluate this situation, in view of the latest developments.

Note the word “protection” in the headline, which is different from “antibodies.” Antibodies always fade in time; it takes around four months after a third COVID shot, according to the best data we have. But there’s more to immunity than just antibodies. There are also T cells and B cells, which work together to help the immune system form a “memory” of a particular virus. (Or the spike protein of a particular virus, which is how the vaccines work.) Once you have that “memory,” you can generate new antibodies rapidly to neutralize that virus if you’re infected with it.
And here’s the important part: The clearer the “memory”

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to send more troops into Ukraine would not trigger the sanctions prepared by the United States and European allies, the White House said Monday.
A White House official explained President Joe Biden’s position during a conference call with reporters Monday.
Biden officials reacted anonymously to Putin’s decision to send Russian troops into Ukraine’s Donestsk and Luhansk regions for “peacekeeping” after the two territories declared independence from Ukraine.
“Russian troops moving into Donbas would not itself be a new step,” the official noted during the call. “Russia has had forces in the Donbas region for the past eight years.”

The Canadian House of Commons voted Monday night to approve a 30-day extension of the Emergencies Act, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently invoked for the first time since its passage in 1988 to quash the trucker blockade in Ottawa protesting the cross-border vaccine mandate.
After hours of debate, the vote on the “motion for confirmation of the declaration of emergency” passed along partisan lines, with 185 members voting “yay” and 151 members voting “nay.” The vast majority of Liberal and New Democratic Leader party members voted to extend the law, and the vast majority of Conservatives and the Bloc Québécois voted to suspend it.

Tied in with other major developments at the network, CNN’s coverage is already apparently shifting.
The one-time leader and sole creator of 24-hour cable news outlet, CNN has fallen in recent years — and not just on hard times. It is amazing to sit back and consider that the channel that quite literally revolutionized broadcast journalism has been reduced to less than a competitor — to a distant also-ran in the ratings. It has been years now since the channel has sunk to Hallmark Channel-levels in the ratings, and the recent spate of scandals has compounded the trauma.
One of the ironies seen from Jeff Zucker’s outlet is the perpetual whining

Moscow - Seated at a large white table in an echoing Kremlin hall, Vladimir Putin summoned his top security officials one by one on Monday to give him their advice at a potential turning point in the crisis around Ukraine.
In a lengthy meeting of his Security Council, broadcast on state television in what a presenter called "unprecedented footage", Putin cross-examined ministers and spy chiefs on the question of whether to recognise the two breakaway Donbass regions of eastern Ukraine as independent states.
One after another, they walked to a white lectern in the column-lined hall to paint a relentlessly grim picture of the situation in Donbass.

The Republican National Committee's official GOP Twitter handle marked Presidents Day with an attack on President Biden.
The GOP tweeted a collage of images of past Republican presidents such as Abraham Lincoln, Richard Nixon and Donald Trump, and wished them a happy Presidents Day.
The GOP also included a masked photo of Biden with the words "NOT YOU" in red capital letters.
In a series of tweets, the GOP highlighted its grievances with the Biden administration, pointing to inflation, border policies, immigration and what it called his "failed agenda. In another tweet, it said "Biden inflation cost the average American household $3,500 last year."
"Biden doesn't care," it added.

Gatekeeping gets a lot of flak and, to be sure, there have been people out there who attempt to use putting others within a subculture down as less because they’re trying to make themselves seem more like true fans. These people exist in every subculture, be they gym rats, firearm enthusiasts, or whiskey drinkers.
You especially see it in political circles…
But gatekeeping, like a gun, is really just a tool that can be used for good for ill and is sometimes very necessary to make sure the spirit of the thing isn’t perverted or corrupted to suit the needs of outside forces.

Following a meeting with his security council this morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave a lengthy speech in which he dropped the last piece of the puzzle for war in place.
In what can only be described as surreal at times, Putin lamented the fall of the Soviet Union, proclaimed it “madness” that former subject nations were allowed to leave Russia, and claimed his nation has been “blackmailed” by Ukraine.
Here are a few clips of his ramblings courtesy of Curtis Houck from Newsbusters. Putin’s “history lesson” on Russian territorial claims and the Soviet Union is obviously not an accident. He is clearly is laying the groundwork not just to take Ukraine

Moscow - Russian President Vladimir Putin recognised two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine as independent on Monday and ordered the Russian army to launch what Moscow called a peacekeeping operation in the area, upping the ante in a crisis the West fears could unleash a major war.
Putin told Russia's defence ministry to deploy troops into the two breakaway regions to "keep the peace" in a decree issued shortly after he announced recognition for Russia-backed separatists there, drawing U.S. and European vows of new sanctions. It was not immediately clear the size of the force that Putin was dispatching, when they would cross the border
