A hardline judge has fined, ridiculed and ruled that a 72-year-old Michigan man with lymphoma “should be ashamed” of being too weak to mow his overgrown lawn.
Burhan Chowdhury of Hamtramck, a community about six miles north of Detroit, admittedly fell behind in yard maintenance after he was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes in 2019. His overgrown property prompted local officials to subpoena Chowdhury.
In now-viral footage of the Zoom court hearing on Jan. 10, Chowdhury’s breathing appeared labored as Judge Alexis G. Krot of the 31st District Court berated him.
“You should be ashamed of yourself,” says Krot, in a video shared Jan. 12 on social media,

A judge berates a cancer-ridden man for....not mowing his lawn? Meanwhile, judges countrywide are commuting sentences for rapists, anarchists, arsonists, and thieves. This judge, along with so many others, needs to be stripped from office. Tarring & feathering would be nice too.

His neighbors reported him??? instead of rallying around their sick neighbor and doing the weeding for him until he is once again able to do it himself or his son returned from India? Forget the judge, his neighbors should be ashamed of themselves.

There are a few things that could have been done. The son could have arranged some maintenance while he was away, but, did his neighbor's know about his illness? That would never have happened in our neighborhood. We would (and did) organize yard work and snow removal for the elderly and ill, There are also church and youth groups that offer help as well.
In any case the judge is such a jerk. bemoaning the fact that she couldn't give a 72 year old cancer patient jail time. How does that help the situation?
The entire world is insane.

And it took over 2 years for the court to deal with this? Yeah, I know there's COVID and Michigan is locked down better than a Super Max prison, but you'd have thunk somebody would have said, hey, I know someone who can help this poor guy out.
I'm kind of hoping we don't get that kind moving to Texas. Stay in Michigan, you southern-end-of-a-northbound-donkey!

Oh, yeah, the judge is a bigot and heavy-handed. I know he's sick, on a fixed income, and can't afford to pay anyone. He didn't just not cut his lawn for a week or two. No family? (How about his son?) No neighbors? No church? No cancer assist volunteers? No community service group, like Boy Scouts? Did no one notice and ask? Or, didn't he ask anyone for help?

The all-American part is that our very expensive court system wasted many multiples of that $100 fine in prosecuting this terrible crime. As long as lawyers are making good money for doing nothing useful, then we're happy. Meanwhile, had Chowdhury been living in welfare housing, that lawn would be moved at the expense of the taxpayer; again maximum America. That said, unmaintained properties are a real problem in some areas, and should be dealt with as they can ruin neighborhoods.

Another leftist judge that believes the sick, lame, or aged are no longer of use to society, so just do away with them. The judge apparently does not believe in a God as he would not have made this judgement and then claim he would do more to a dying man if he could. We as a nation are beginning to lose empathy for the sick, disabled, and aged which means we are losing the soul of the nation.

Not the first judge to be caught acting like this. When they go viral, they usually end up resigning.
The guy did not need a lecture. He needed help. He did not get any from the sound of this. The video went viral. Did anyone offer to help him? Don't bet on it.
Some people are too proud or too ashamed to ask for help. It happens.
Some people are blessed with good family, friends, neighbors, and community. Others not so much. Instead of helping those in need, people file complaints instead.
There was a case on a court show a while back. An asthmatic appeared before the judge with a family member. They were clearly in distress. Did the judge help? Nope. They got angry and annoyed instead. Judge was only concerned with handling the case which he could not because the person was in difficulty. The judge became more and more annoyed and eventually postponed the case. The judge would not be seeing the case ever again. The asthmatic died two days later. The entire case was caught on court video. It went viral. The judge resigned.

Shame on the Neighbors who didn't offer help to an Old Man with Cancer. He has enough on his shoulders (imagine having to pay for cancer drugs) without having to worry about his yard. Get off your Duff and pick up the yard and cut the grass for him, or shovel his walk. Jeesh! This makes every one of his NEIGHBORS look like a Bunch of Losers!

If the man is stricken with cancer, then shame on his neighbors for not mowing his yard. I mowed my neighbors yard and frequently used the weedeater while he was recuperating from hip surgery. That is just what neighbors do.

You're right, yerhonor; I am ashamed of being physically unable to maintain my lawn and restricted by the state from interacting with neighbors to enlist help. But, you know what, yerhonor? I'm more ashamed to live in a state with a judge who shows so little compassion for people suffering from terminal conditions. Not just showing no compassion, but going out of your way to be mean about it. When you fine me, please leave me enough funds to buy a one-way ticket out of this hellhole.

My departed neighbor used to come to the house on his riding mower and take care of the front yard. He did the same for others who couldn't chase a mower. Fred was known as The Lawn Ranger! He was the epitome of a OGOB (original good ole boy).

Age and illness play a role in this situation, of course. Cultural differences might as well. Even folks who grew up in the United States differ in how they expect lawns to look. Folks who grew up overseas could be far more or less strict in their views on lawncare.
The judge is way out of line. Justice is about setting things right. If it involves an actual crime, then part of setting things right is taking the criminals out of the public so that they cannot harm others anymore. It's called jail or prison time.
But suggesting that this man go to jail or prison sets nothing right. The judge should refer the man to social services that could help him get the assistance he needs at an affordable price. That might mean neighbors or churches or volunteer organizations.

It's a lot more than the lawn...it's the entire house that is a wreck. And please note that it's an immigrant, Muslim neighborhood. The Indian subcontinent culture isn't kind to the sick and the weak....it's dog eat dog and step on the face of the one beneath you. A bit of a generalization, but apparent even in corporate culture. The Judicial System sucks. But they will let violent criminals free at a moment's notice. This judge was appointed by a Republican Governor. It's obvious that Judge Krot lacks common sense. For Krot's sake, if the man can't cut his lawn help him find a way it can be done.

Having watched the video, I see that the very first line of this article is a lie. The judge did not say the guy should be ashamed of being too weak to mow his overgrown lawn, and she didn't ridicule anything about him other than his lawn maintenance. So I suspect the rest of the article is probably as misleading, built on modern day journalism's penchant for cutting and pasting a few facts into their agenda's template.
The judge just gave him a $100 fine and a tongue lashing. Big whoop. Instead of racism playing a role here, maybe there's some misogyny.

This is a microcosm of what is really wrong with America. Not that terribly long ago, people would have helped their neighbor--even if you didn't like him--who had cancer and was unable to do it himself. Who knows, might even start a good thing. I can't imagine turning my neighbor in like this, inconceivable.

See Pakistan/India for an example of the ‘love and comity’ between cultures and you’ll understand why the ‘neighbors’ didn’t do squat.
