California’s state lawmakers recently failed to pass bail reform legislation, creating a case study in how fundamentally poor public policy will self-destruct if it’s exposed for what it is. On the face of it, there is a logic to the continuing argument that cash-based bail is unfair to people who have little or no money. But that simplistic premise is deeply flawed and has led to a huge increase in violent crime in California, as well as in other places that implemented the policy. Unfortunately, the grim repercussions are not just statistical.

The events of the past five or six years have demonstrated to America that the FBI is no longer the unbiased law enforcement agency it once was. (snip) There are only two options: rehabilitate the FBI, or eliminate it. The current state is unacceptable in a functioning constitutional republic.(snip) The DoJ has not only failed to provide course correction to the FBI, it has arguably contributed to the problems. The rebuilding of the FBI should be overseen by a board chartered with the mission of rehabilitation, and staffed with people who care about integrity and understand what a well-functioning police organization should look like.
