Sen. Joe Manchin has presented a new challenge to President Joe Biden’s $1.75 trillion social spending package moving through Congress, objecting to a massive $100 billion immigration agenda that grants amnesty without major border controls. The centrist Democrat has begun warning that while he supports aiding so-called “Dreamers” and other immigrants, the bill is a no-go if it doesn’t also include some type of border security spending.

House Democratic leaders said lawmakers could vote on a $1.85 trillion social welfare spending bill as early as Thursday before a full cost analysis is completed.
Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters the House will begin debating the Build Back Better plan on Wednesday, with a vote as early as Thursday “and hopefully the latest on Friday … or Saturday.”
California Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier announced that she will not seek reelection in 2022, adding to a Democratic exodus that is expected to grow as members expect Republicans to win control of the House next year.
“Today, I am announcing that I will not be a candidate for reelection to Congress in 2022,” Speier said in a video posted to Twitter. “It’s time for me to come home, time for me to be more than a weekend wife, mother, and friend.”
Speier is the eighth House Democrat to announce that she will retire from Congress at the end of this term

Watching the news, one sees constant stories about COVID numbers rising, yet again, now almost two years into this pandemic, with COVID hospitalizations in some states higher than they have ever been except for the spike last December. In my state of Colorado, the test positivity rate is almost 10 percent, with 1 in 48 infected and if the current trend continues, this will be the worst COVID spike the state has seen.
On the surface, that doesn’t make sense, since nearly 80 percent of eligible Coloradans have received at least one vaccine dose, suggesting the vaccines are not working as well as they should or as advertised
