The Art Institute of Chicago fired all of its roughly 100 volunteer museum guides, or docents, in September because too many of them were wealthy, white women. The news of the mass firing has only trickled out slowly, partly because the institute asked docents not to speak to the media, and because the left-leaning Chicago media showed little interest in covering the issue.(Snip)Ironically, the Journal was able to speak to one of the fired docents, who happened to be black, and defied the museum’s request that no one speak directly to the media—perhaps because she had less fear of being accused of racism.

People have lost their minds. I will be so happy when this (national) phase is over…..but shutter to think what fresh hell the next one will be. I think I liked it better when people were just streaking through football fields.

Stupid stupid stupid.
How many of those wealthy white ladies made donations to Chicago's Art Institute? Guess they will now expect to be supported solely by taxes.
By all means, I would rather have an uneducated unintelligent cretin who has no appreciation for art explaining art to me. Bet those wealthy white women gave their services for free. The new 'guides' will expect to be paid.

“Many of the volunteers—though not all—are older white liberal women, whose support for diversity got them fired”.
There. Fixed it.

Being an AIC docent was not a casual commitment, and the fired docents averaged 15 years of experience. They were required to take eighteen months of twice-a-week training, five years of continual research and writing to meet the criteria of 13 museum content areas, plus monthly and bi-weekly trainings to further know the materials, processes and cultural context of the Art Institute’s collection. All that is on top of their volunteer duties as docents. I can't imagine this free labor can be easily replaced, and if it can be, it will most likely be by paid staff. Is the AIC's endowment so big that it can afford to buy such expertise in the future?

Although I probably have nothing in common with the docents I think this is sad. They probably derived some satisfaction in sharing their knowledge. The visitors benefited. Perhaps a few will wake up and get 'unwoke'.

This is not the end of the story or of the cultural purge. First the docents, then the art itself. The objective is to diminish and marginalize the historic importance of white European and North American art and music in favor of indigenous and primitive art from Africa and South America. The art on the walls today will slowly be sent into storage and replaced with the culturally approved pieces. Just a warning.

I'm on the side of the museum on this. I don't need some Karen telling me why I should appreciate an artwork because it's a Gaugain or Picasso, Monet or Manet. Sometimes an artist or architect creates a not-so-desireable work that might not please the majority. The work must speak for itself and let the artist defend it or just say "it is what it is" which is the classic cop-out of intellectually lazy Bohemians.

From the 45 goals of Communism: Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35
January 10, 1963
Current Communist Goals
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."
Getting along aren't they??? Looks like Joe McCarthy was right years ago...unfortunately there were already enough in positions of power to muzzle him, and look where we are now...

I was a music docent at a major museum. I was never “hired” I met the qualifications and volunteered my time to share both my knowledge and absolute joy of music and the symphony with others, especially school children.

Docents are the forefront of the fundraising groups. Some also volunteer to be trained to lead instructional tours of the gallery. I was once slated to become a docent at Hillwood, the wonderful former home of Marjori Merriwether Post in Bethesda, MD. Now a museum with gorgeous collection of Russian antiquities that she and her ambassador husband bought in Russia when their dollars were needed there more than Catherine the Great’s treasures. The training was to be intensive. I never moved to Bethesda after all. (A good thing, as it turned out.)
Let the Art Institute figure that out by themselves.

Re #13, I am surprised that some don’t know that art museum tours with those “Karens” are optional. He should never have felt forced to tour any museum with them. Most docents simply give the history of the artist and the piece, anything special that a viewer might like to know. I’ve taken them a few times. None told me I had to like something. Strange.

The Art Institute should also sever ties with all their rich white skinned patrons and replace the two lion sculptures out front with sculptures of rats.

#20 missed my point. Apparently, there are those who tell us that we should appreciate an artwork whether we like it or not. And docents don't just hang around museums hoping someone asks them a question. They make a pact with the museum to operate tours that the museum charges people to tour.
As part of my degree in Architecture, I went through the requisite art history courses wherein we learned the reason Picasso painted Guernica, Manet's pointilism style of The Picnic, and Rubens' obsession with full-figured women.
Finally, and with no malice aforethought, I didn't intend to disparage those who volunteer their time illucidating the nuances of art to the unwashed masses.

Those wealthy white people need to withdraw their loaned art from said den of vipers. The institute also needs to lose its tax status.

Good. Now the art can go into storage. It will be replaced by the work of taggers. And bozo art which is done by flicking random paint on canvas. And used toilets. And jars full of urine which contain crucifixes. And Porn videos.
And the docents will be street rappers.
Yeah. That's the ticket. Full degeneracy.

#13, never use a card catalog. Or a Phone book. Or a map. Or any other OPTIONAL service that provides information and guidance.
And ‘unwashed masses’? Why, how very liberal of you, your disdain for those who did not take Art Appreciation 101 like you did.
Wow.
