This year's Saturday Night Live (SNL) season opener was watched by just 3.5 million viewers on Saturday, dropping 35 percent from the previous year. The long-standing Nielsen agency released the data, which was drawn from 44 different areas. It should, however, be noted that this data is imputed and preliminary in nature, and that Nielsen will release the full data on Tuesday. According to the New York Post, the show pulled out all the stops in order to get viewers to tune in. The show was hosted by actor Owen Wilson along with cast member Kenan Thompson.

They pulled out all the stops, did they? They tried everything except humor.

I remember when SNL was funny. Even Al Franken was funny. Of course, that was about 40 years ago.

From the beginning, there were a LOT of funny people on SNL, with *were* being the operative word. Now it's not even fit tor the little mini shows you see on gas pumps.

Was it the singers idea to sing naked or is there a Harvey Weinstein on staff at SNL to persuade her?

Actors pretending that they are funny. Singers pretending that they are singing. Audience prentending that they are looking at humor and music.

The thing that puzzles me is entertainment folks don't seem to care they very little audience. Same with movies who bomb big time. They just keep making them. Wonder who keeps footing the bills.

If one likes drug humor and political indoctrination, SNL is the show for you. I quit watching in the 80's after being underwhelmed for years.

If this doesn't show that consumers don't like the product, and if we don't, bend over and kiss your boney butt-flaps !

Apart from being totally unfunny AND relying on canned laugh-tracks almost entirely, although filmed live in front of a 'woke' audience, what's there to like about them?

Oh how i loved SNL in the old days. Mr Bill. Roseanne Rosanadana. The coneheads. Baba Wawa. I could go on and on. Anyone watching it in recent years has no idea what they're missing.

I would like to think woke skits and jokes caused this drop but I think #2 has it right. Their little leftist audience should have stayed with them but people are migrating in droves to the streaming services. I also think that there is simply too much content available. It’s splintering the audience and there will be a winnowing of the weaker players.

They aren't allowed to do comedy any longer, so they haven't been funny in a long time. It might hurt someone's feelings and offend them. The only acceptable targets used as fodder for jokes are christians and conservatives, as we don't march in the streets or cut off their heads when we are offended.
