Jim Sheeler, a former Rocky Mountain News journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize for his extensive and compassionate reporting on the families of Colorado soldiers killed in the Iraq War and the man tasked with notifying them, has died. Sheeler, who was also an author, was 53. Sheeler died last week at his home in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, according to Case Western Reserve University, where he taught journalism and media writing. The cause of death was not immediately determined, the school said Wednesday.

Comments:

I knew Jim in the 90s. He was a true journalist and never let politics get in the way of his reporting. His obits on soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan were made into a book. Pick it up if you can. Very moving. RIP

Democrats and Republicans are right to blame each other for the fall of Kabul. It’s a loss for America’s bipartisan foreign policy establishment as a whole. For nearly two decades Washington sent thousands of Americans to their deaths and spent trillions of taxpayer dollars to wage a strategically pointless war. And because both sides of the political divide should be held accountable, military as well as civilian officials, too, it is unlikely that anyone ever will be. Since everyone is to blame, holding anyone accountable implicates everyone.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said Thursday people will “likely” need a booster dose of a Covid-19 vaccine within 12 months of getting fully vaccinated. He also said it’s possible people will need to get vaccinated against the virus annually. “It is extremely important to suppress the pool of people that can be susceptible to the virus,” he told CNBC’s Bertha Coombs during an event with CVS Health. He added the vaccines will be an important tool in the fight against highly contagious variants.

Republican President Donald Trump has a slight lead over Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in a tracking poll of Ohio likely voters following the national conventions. The state is predictably split with rural voters backing Trump and urban voters backing Biden in the latest figures released Monday by Morning Consult. It is another marker that shows a competitive race in Ohio, which Trump won in 2016 by 8 percentage points. Morning Consult polls daily and uses a 10-day rolling average for state-level head-to-head presidential race results.

The gun Patricia McCloskey waved at protesters was inoperable when it arrived at the St. Louis police crime lab, but a member of Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner's staff ordered crime lab experts to disassemble and reassemble it and wrote that it was “readily capable of lethal use” in charging documents filed Monday, 5 On Your Side has learned. In Missouri, police and prosecutors must prove that a weapon is “readily” capable of lethal use when it is used in the type of crime with which the McCloskeys have been charged.

Some 54 scientists have resigned or been fired as a result of an ongoing investigation by the National Institutes of Health into the failure of NIH grantees to disclose financial ties to foreign governments. In 93% of those cases, the hidden funding came from a Chinese institution. The new numbers come from Michael Lauer, NIH’s head of extramural research. Lauer had previously provided some information on the scope of NIH’s investigation, which had targeted 189 scientists at 87 institutions.

President Biden slammed Border Patrol agents filmed on horseback attempting to stop migrants from crossing the Rio Grande into Texas, saying they would “pay” for their actions. “It was horrible to see what you saw, to see people treated like they did—horses barely running them over people being strapped,” Biden said at a press conference at the White House on Friday. “It’s outrageous. I promise you those people will pay.” Biden added, “There will be consequences. It’s an embarrassment. But beyond an embarrassment is dangerous, it’s wrong.”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced Thursday that Border Patrol agents will no longer be permitted to use horses to guard the border in Del Rio, Texas, after “horrific” photos emerged of agents swinging long reins while interacting with Haitian migrants. The announcement comes after the media caused a frenzy by falsely portraying the videos and photos as showing agents hitting the migrants with whips. It was later revealed that the agents were in fact wielding the long reins that make it easier to maintain control of their horses, according to Border Control chief Raul Ortiz. An unnamed Border Patrol agent told Townhall’s Julio Rosas that mounted agents

Why has the federal government been trying so hard to keep surveillance footage of January 6th under wraps? We may have an answer to that question if a set of newly released videos are any indication.A judge ordered the videos be released against the wishes of the government prosecutors who claimed doing so would undermine national security. Of course, that makes no sense, and what’s on the videos runs counter to the chosen narrative.Behold, the event that has been compared to the Civil War by the President of the United States. (Tweet/Video) If you can’t watch the video, what you’ll see are open doors/windows and people casually walking in.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is warning the Republican Party that staying in former President Donald Trump’s thrall will not lead to a viable political future. The Lexington Herald-Leader obtained a preview of Peril, the upcoming book from Bob Woodward and Robert Costa that has already produced a multitude of explosive details on Trump’s last days in office. According to the new excerpt, McConnell is encouraging the GOP to move away from Trumpism, calling the ex-president “a fading brand. Retired. OTTB as they say in Kentucky — off-the-track Thoroughbred.” “There is a clear trend moving,” McConnell said. “Sucking up to Donald Trump is not a strategy that works.”

By an overwhelming majority, the House voted to fund the Israeli Iron Dome today, a defensive system that protects against Palestinian rocket barrages. That vote was necessary as a stand-alone bill because far-left anti-Semites, mostly members of the so-called “squad,” joined forces earlier in the week to strip the funding from the main budget bill. Naturally, those who live to see Israel wiped off the face of the Earth didn’t take it well as scenes of lunacy were presented on the floor. A coalition of 164 Catholic groups sent a letter to President Biden on Thursday telling him his border policies violate the tenets of his own faith and urged him to embrace Pope Francis’ teachings. The groups blasted the pandemic border expulsion authority, known as Title 42, which the government says gives it the power to immediately turn back illegal immigrants without giving them the chance to make claims for protection in the U.S.(Snip)The letter comes just ahead of the Catholic Church’s World Day for Migrants and Refugees, which is Sunday.
