Thanks to its increasing anti-police extremism, the Democrat Party has lost three influential voters in Virginia. The three influential voters — Sheriff Chip Shuler of Smyth County, Sheriff John McClanahan of Buchanan County and Sheriff Brian Hieatt of Tazewell County — were once all Democrats. But not any anymore.Shuler made his switch two Mondays ago when he formally filed a membership application with the Smyth County Republican Committee and the application was promptly approved, as reported by local station WJHL.“I am changing to the Republican Party because of the relentless attack on law enforcement by Democrats in Richmond and Washington. My deputies work hard to serve and protect the citizens

Lots of folks in the old South are Dems because their family have been Dems, and conservatives, for generations.
The extreme leftist tilt of the current Dems are steadily driving people out.

Ok fine. But keep in mind that here in small town America, people change parties just to win elections. They have no ideological path at all except for what gets them or keeps them a job.

I''m a little confused. The Democrat Party has been anti-police and soft on crime for decades. What took them so long to leave?

So, perhaps there is hope that Virginia may once again become a sane, conservative state. May have to exclude the top left part that “work” in Washington. If so, do it.

It's big news when it's the Loudoun, Fairfax, and Arlington County sheriffs. That's the heart of the relatively new progressive Virginia smack dab in the DC - NoVa burbs.

I appreciate the new Republicans, but being a Democrat for all these years shows some very bad judgment. I think the 3 need to go through a de-brainwashing pit, and not bring any of those former Democrat ideas with them.

I know some small town Virginia bureaucrats through family business, and they are generally pretty conservative and sick of the national Dems.

Who approves someone switching parties? You have to apply to be an R or a D? It's been a long time since I registered, forgive me if I'm being dumb.

NOBODY has to approve a switch in political parties. I went from republican to independent on January 7th with a few strokes on my keyboard. It doesn't shut off the flow of GOP e-mail and snail mail begging for money but it's easy otherwise.

Just like making more vintage wine by adding some swill from a box. If their political philosophy got them this far in the Dem party, they won't change because the wind shifted.
We have more than enough RINOs now.

This is only the beginning of the move by democrats to the Republican Party... obama/commie harris and their puppet/sleepy joe have damaged the moderate democrats to the point where they cannot stay with the ole democrat party...now I'm waiting for more democratic senators to move over to law and order as WE witnessed with the fake Jan 6th commission jump...welcome aboard ...

Democrats are a criminal organization pretending to be a political party. No different than the mafia.

#10, if that is a serious question....it's your choice, nobody approves anything. You check a box, and it's done.

On January 7th, all I had to do, #10, was log in to my county voter registration home page, find my voting record, and change my party affiliation from republican to unaffiliated. It took about two minutes. But, yes, I am still getting bludgeoned with beg-athon texts messages, emails, and political junk mail.
At my age, I need to focus now on my own financial affairs and stop pouring retirement money into the campaigns and fraudulent elections. Of course, I am committed to voting for non-RINO pubbie candidates and especially President Trump if he decides to run again. But, I can't do the thousand-dollar contributions anymore.

I live in Nevada and was unaware that some sheriffs are actually Democrats. It seems a conflict of interest.

I remember when our (sleazely) DA switched from Democrat to Republican in Texas oh, 20 years or so ago (he's long since left office).
Said at the time, if you're a Democrat elected official in most Texas counties, you have to consider the Three R's when running for re-election: Retire, Resign, Republican.

I believe these sheriffs have finally become aware of the fact that today’s Democrat party is nothing like the party of their youth. In the campaign to attract every fringe group, they have become the party of the radical left. And, that radical left wants nothing to do with Democracy.

I live in a small rural county in southern Oklahoma. The last County Sheriff's election was determined in the Republican Primary. There were no Democrat candidates.
