ATLANTA, GA – Those in law enforcement, and their supporters, have spent way too much time examining the case lodged against Derek Chauvin – and not enough time contemplating the ramifications of the trial of Atlanta Police Officer Garrett Rolfe. The case against Officer Garrett Rolfe is truly a double-edged sword in the realm of potential case law, whether he’s found to be guilty or innocent in the murder of Rayshard Brooks. [Tweet] The caveat of the case and trial against Minneapolis Police Officer Chauvin was that it wound up overshadowing a more critical case that has the propensity to adversely affect law enforcement on a state and national scale,

The giant flaw in his reasoning is that under current Georgia law a Tazer is already classified as a deadly weapon. That train left the station some long time ago. I don't know if this classification came as the result of a court case, or a law passed by the state legislature, but you can look it up. Georgia law says that a Tazer is a deadly weapon. That is in the officer's favor, it would seem to me, but then again I am frequently guilty of using linear logic in legal situations where all too often, logic is as foreign as silverware at a hog trough. IMO, there is no 'second edge' at all to his "double edged sword". Only one bad way that this plays out. If the officer is found guilty, it is basically a ruling that no substantial force can be used by police officers in effecting a lawful arrest. Policing will become nearly impossible.

This article is mostly nonsense. Skip to the editor's now at the end. Incapacitating an armed police officer can not be allowed since the attacker will then have access to his weapons. All force must be permitted to prevent that from happening.

Read about the “staff writer” who composed this op-ed piece. Does he really like the idea that Rolfe would be found guilty to just make case law that he’d like better?

Brooks was found passed out drunk in his car. He was cooperative until the cops went to snap on the cuffs over (IIRC) some traffic warrants. Then a brawl ensues in which Brooks grabs a taser. He discharged the taser and missed while running away from the cops. From this point he was unarmed, having already been patted down by the police. The police had his car, his wallet and license, and knew his likely nearby destination if he didn't pass out first. When all is said and done, the question will come to the Atlanta jury...What threat did Brooks present the police or the public that required an officer shooting this black man? Watch the videos before you answer...

FTA: "Currently it’s presumed that it’s reasonable for an officer to travel up the use of force options to a gun when a suspect pulls a less lethal weapon on him because the officer then has to consider what the suspect will do once the officer is incapacitated." I think the author is being overly dramatic regarding the outcome if the officer is found not guilty. The use of force continuum can be short circuited at any point. Given the totality of circumstances, an officer making a lawful arrest need not "travel up the use of force options" but may use deadly force the first rattle out of the can in order to protect someone (including himself/herself) against serious bodily injury or death. In this case, it is not the taser that is capable of causing serious bodily injury or death but rather the actions of Rayshard Brooks in his active resistance and obvious willingness to combat the police officers that would cause a "reasonable and prudent" person to be in fear of serious bodily injury or death should they become incapacitated by being tased. Police are typically required to experience the effects of a taser before being authorized to carry one; hence, they realize that they may not be able to use a firearm to protect themselves once tased. The risk to justice comes when the assumption that the jurors are "reasonable and prudent" is in error due to racial animus and/or political ideology among jurors, creating a deep bias that overshadows a reasonable consideration of the evidence. I was once falsely accused of using excessive force during an arrest that mad1e me question the worth of my career in law enforcement. What kept me going for another 20 years was the testimony of two elderly black gentlemen who witnessed the event and told the truth about what they saw. Since neither of the gentlemen came forward to volunteer information, it was the efforts of a black Internal Affairs detective sergeant that discovered the presence of the witnesses and his follow-on encouragement for them to give a deposition. Moral: not everything is as black and white as it may appear, regardless of the side you favor when race is injected.

Black inner-city areas are a bunch of giant woodpiles waiting to become bonfires. When people want to loot and burn, they will do it at the slightest provocation. Blacks are already whining about how some businesses are not coming back to their neighborhoods. Well to heck with them. They can perish as a culture or rise from the ashes, but I simply don't care anymore. It's on them, not me.

Since the previous century I’ve been articulating in the public arena an array of interconnecting ideas about how the world works. For example, I tend to suspect that racial differences in achievement in 2021 have more to do with nature and nurture, with culture and human biodiversity, than with unspecifiable malevolence on the part of white men as dictated by the theory of systemic racism. (Note that I don’t put very much effort into telling you how I think the world should work, just how it does work. At least, the latter’s testable.) I usually don’t go out of my way to make specific predictions

In a year where 141 police officers have died in the line of duty, seven of whom were shot to death in May alone, Amazon is still selling tons of hateful, anti-police apparel, including “Blue Lives Murder” t-shirts, hoodies, and masks. Three of the last four officers who died in the line of duty were Hispanic, so quit with the “cops are white supremacists” nonsense. Uber-woke Amazon started selling the hateful swag less than a month after the death of George Floyd. Blue Lives Matter founder Sgt. Joe Imperatrice spoke out against the outrage last year,

No, this isn’t a joke. Edward Luttwak, the distinguished Israeli-American strategist and public intellectual, tweeted the following this morning: 11 Chinese universities teach Greek and Latin. Another 20 seek staff to so as well. Back in the US, the Princeton CLASSICS department has just eliminated the Latin or Greek requirement “to address systemic racism”. Truly racist say I. Why not just end it ? Jobs await in 中国 The Chinese characters at the end mean “Middle Kingdom.” Princeton created an uproar by ditching the requirement for classics majors to learn Greek or Latin. That shouldn’t be a surprise: In 2017 Harvard eliminated the music theory requirement for music majors.

As an admittedly partisan writer, my bias shows up in the subjects I cover, not in the facts I report. I want to know what the other guys know. It is always helpful, often essential. Reporters in the political center and on left seem to feel no such obligation. Writing for audiences that know no more than what Big Media has chosen to tell them, these “journalists” are inclined to write politically useful fiction and often get away with it. Such is the case with Edward-Isaac Dovere in his new bestseller, Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats' Campaigns to Defeat Trump. Although no great fan of Barack Obama,

The last American president with actual combat experience, in a conflict where the United States proved victorious, was George H.W. Bush. During World War II, Bush served as a pilot with Torpedo Squadron 51 (VT-51) and on his 58th mission he was shot down by the Japanese and rescued by a U.S. submarine. Joe Biden never served in the military but from 2008-2016 he was vice president to the composite character David Garrow described in Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama. The former Barry Soetoro never served, and for the Obama-Biden team, the role of the U.S. military was not to defeat America’s enemies.

One of the enduring mysteries, one that is rarely explored, is why all right-wing movements in America have failed to make a dent in Progressivism. The first iteration of conservatism in America was washed away by Progressive reformers in the first part of the 20th century. When political crisis struck, conservatives had no political solutions, just theoretical analysis. Progressives, meanwhile, had a program. In response to the success of New Deal politics, the American right reorganized in the middle of the last century around more practical items. Buckley-style

A lot was made last week about Tuesday May 25th being the first anniversary of George Floyd's death while in police custody. For me, the most graphic indication of the impact of Floyd’s death and its year-long over-the-top aftermath was provided by the photograph and videos of George Floyd’s relatives last Tuesday outside the White House after they met with President Biden and Vice President Harris. Right in front of the White House, family members and their attorney had their clenched fists raised and pumping in the air in a radical black power salute reminiscent of the Marxist Black Panthers of the late 1960s.

In 2015, The Atlantic ran a cover story titled, "Is It Time for the Jews to Leave Europe?" In 2021, the question is whether it’s time for the Jews to leave New York and Los Angeles. The magazine cover story mentioned Malmo. Most stories about antisemitism in Europe reference the Swedish city whose Jewish population dropped from 3,000 to barely 800. Current estimates are that Malmo will have no Jews left by the end of the decade as its population flees Muslim mob violence, firebombings, and random assaults: including 100 aimed at its sole rabbi. “I hear students shouting in the hallway about killing Jews,” a public school teacher described. The Manchurian Candidate movie, based on a novel by Richard Condon, was once denounced by a British critic as a “cheaply paranoid fantasy.” Roger Ebert, reviewing the 1962 movie, acknowledged that it touched a chord despite being unrealistic: "The title of 'The Manchurian Candidate' has entered everyday speech as shorthand for a brainwashed sleeper…That such programming is impossible has not prevented it from being absorbed as fact." But if subliminal programming were really impossible, then why did it evoke such a strong reaction in 1962? We’re still gripped by paranoia. Forget the 20th century; hardly a day in 2021 passes without some new denunciation or endorsement

Several counties in Oregon on May 18 voted to consider joining the state of Idaho, which is part of a long-shot movement to break away from the state that has long been dominated by politicians in Portland. Voters in Malheur, Sherman, Grant, Baker, and Lake counties approved various measures that require county officials to take steps to look into moving the Idaho border west to incorporate the counties. The grassroots group Move Oregon’s Border for a Greater Idaho is aiming to have the eastern counties—which are mostly rural—join Idaho because they believe they would be better off with Idaho’s more conservative political leadership.
