SAN FRANCISCO – Police officers responding to an auto burglary in progress here last week found the suspect sitting in the back of a Ford van with a machete in hand. Over the next three hours, a growing law enforcement group that included a crisis negotiation team and tactical operations experts circled the suspect. He refused to leave the van, so they engaged him in dialogue. At 8:37 p.m., the suspect, Marcel King, a 34-year-old Black man, exited the van without his machete and surrendered. “By isolating the scene, calling for backup, and generally de-escalating the situation, we got a

Over and over again the problem is resisting arrest. Are police supposed to spend 3 hours apprehending every suspect?

Another high school term paper! Everybody these days seems to have all the answers! A guy sitting in a van with a machete isn't the same thing as a perp aiming a pistol at you. When a cop is facing a perp with a gun, he isn't going to go "Hollywood" and try to talk the perp out of shooting, or call in the Milk and Oreos Brigade.

In answer to the question posed by the headline: No but perhaps more black de-criminalization training would help. I don't buy USA Today's question frame, which ignores why police are called to confront the criminals in the first place and the actions taken by said criminals resulting in their deaths.

It would seem that the fanatics on the left will not be satisfied until the LEOs are basically a clean-up crew. Upon observing a crime in progress a future LEO will simply watch the scene and if there is a casualty left after the event has concluded, they will call for an ambulance. Next, file a report on what they observed and then continue their patrol. What the leftist idiots fail to realize is that if the public cannot rely on the help of the police in a dire situation, the public will come to rely on themselves. That means packing heat, a katakana, acid spray, cane-sword, or whatever the citizen feels comfortable with. It may come to pass that crime may become far too risky for the average leftist to engage in. As a man once stated "An armed society is a polite society."

I would have shot the four tires. Send all the other cops back out on their patrols. Sit and wait for the guy to exit. might take a few shifts of cops, but why waste the time of the other cops. send a social worker to talk to the guy his decision. want to rot in that van, then do it, getting to the point who cares anymore. I am getting to that point

#7, they can drive for many, many miles on flat tires. This has happened many times when police put out stop strips and flatten all four tires and they keep driving. The car gets unstable, hard to handle, throwing sparks from the rims after the last shreds of tires are gone, but they often just keep on going. Eventually, many miles away they lose control and wreck.

We have mounting violence because the left imposed let them go policies on the country, and now the criminals have no fear of the police, the judge, or jail. If the police just went in and arrested people, took them to jail, and made them stay there, we would have a lot less violaters. That has been proven everywhere crackdowns are used.

De-escalation Training! What a great idea. It should be required for all Black men and women who feel that they may have a brush with the law or have been arrested in the past. They all need to learn to not escalate in a police interaction situation. Don't try to escape while being cuffed, don't try to drive away while being talked to, and don't fight the police. Learn that by complying with police greatly improves you chances of not being shot by police.

The answer is NO. The de-escalation needs to start at home with children being disciplined, parents setting boundaries, implementing curfews, and parents taking responsibility for them, instead of ensuring that they are fed and babysat by the God-less public skrewl system.

if the guy in the article had attacked the police with his machete he would have been killed. Law enforcement needs a non-lethal weapons that will take down a perp as effectively as a gun. Nothing would be 100% effective, and some people would still die though. There are no guarantees. Tasers aren't the answer, btw. Too many perps are unfazed by them if they are high. De-escalation had nothing to do with Toledo and Wright. Both were resisting while trying to flee the police when they were killed. One had a gun. The other was trying to flee in a car. Floyd was a different situation. He was already in custody. The problem there was the police did not identify a medical emergency. Sadly, nothing will change. People make bad choices, and all too often die from them. it doesn't matter what, if any, reforms are enacted. Stop blaming others for people's poor choices. Toledo, Wright, and Floyd are all responsible for their own actions.
