In the late 1930s, after years on the Vaudeville circuit, Dorothy Toy debuted on Broadway with her dance partner Paul Wing — known together as famous dance duo, Toy & Wing. Decades later, her daughter, Dorlie Fong, had hoped to bring Toy to StoryCorps to share her story, but Toy died in 2019 at age 102 before that was possible. Recently, Fong shared memories from her childhood with StoryCorps(Snip) As a child, while her mother was touring with the dance company, Fong would watch her performances in awe. I liked this story. An unusual one, but somehow very sweet.

Bittersweet story. Although not exactly bitter, the author had more of a business relationship with her mother beginning in early adolescence, but she longed for something deeper. Later in life when the mother needed her care, she found the longed-for relationship after the demands of a career in dance were replaced with a sweet fragility. Makes one think about what might have been. Although her mother was a talented professional dancer, a field that requires total dedication, there is a lesson to be learned by all career women, especially those with young and school-age children. The precious time at home is fleeting, only 18 short years; the working years stretch on for decades. Women need to learn how to pace themselves. They can have it all, but not all at the same time. A dedicated focus on raising children, with a father who is their husband, is the ultimate career because it produces good people that will impact society for generations, rather than a product that is obsolete in five years or less. Recently on the phone my widowed sister was talking about spending time with her daughter, with whom she has a decent relationship, and two granddaughters (10 &12) when unexpectedly she lamented, "I wish I hadn't been so focused on my career." Her husband passed unexpectedly five years ago from a stroke at 69. The loss has been difficult for my niece because her father shouldered the bulk of the parenting. Since his death and my sister's retirement, my niece is suddenly the focus of my sister's world. My sister was a surgical nurse working with the doctor that pioneered skin transplants for burn patients. She eventually became the Director of Surgical Services at a large L.A. suburban hospital. She was always on-call. I can't remember a family special event that she didn't leave early for the hospital. She started as a Candystriper at 16 and retired 50 years later. Great career and she's the go-to consultant for the hospital at a cool $100/hour. But she has a daughter who has been mourning her Dad for five years, and she doesn't know how to be a mother, "I wish I hadn't been so focused on my career."

The only sad note was her mother’s going into dementia late in her long life. They had an unusual life but she was able to be with her mother throughout much of her young life. She doesn’t sound at all as though she was either abused or neglected, but that she enjoyed their special relationship.

Boring politicians are brought down in boring ways. But for spectacular politicians, only spectacular attacks will do. And Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz is nothing if not spectacular. On Tuesday, The New York Times reported that Gaetz is under investigation for a possible sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. To make the claims even spicier, the Times threw in words like “human trafficking.” Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida and a close ally of former President Donald J. Trump, is being investigated by the Justice Department over whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and paid for her to travel with him, according to three people briefed on the matter.

In his first White House press conference last month, Joe Biden needed a cheat sheet and marked photos of approved reporters. The Delaware Democrat thus invites a comparison to Franklin Delano Roosevelt who, many Americans still believe, was fully able-bodied and a tower of strength during World War II. Hugh Gregory Gallagher challenged that perception in FDR’s Splendid Deception, which carried the subtitle, “The moving story of Roosevelt’s massive disability—and the intense efforts to conceal it from the public.” In 1920, FDR was the Democratic candidate for vice president under James Cox. In our free republic, where the God-given right to free speech is recognized by our federal and state constitutions and guaranteed by our servant governments, a recent poll of our fellow citizens should amaze no one and enrage everyone. Consider these findings: 64 percent believe there is “a growing cancel culture” threatening their freedom (36 percent disagreed); 36 percent said cancel culture is a “big problem”; 32 percent a “moderate problem”; 20 percent a “small problem”; 13 percent said it’s “not a problem”; 54 percent are “concerned” that expressing online opinions would get them banned (by Big Tech) or fired by their employer; 46 percent “were not concerned.”

The Capitol police officer killed by a knife-wielding driver on Friday has been identified as veteran cop Billy Evans. Evans had worked for the Capitol Police for 18 years. On Friday, he was killed and one of his fellow officers was critically injured when a suspect, named by NBC as Noah Green, mowed them down in his blue Nissan Altima. Green, who was from Indiana but has ties to Virginia, was then shot dead by other cops. He was not known to police in Washington DC but he did have a record in another state, according to law enforcement sources.

After January’s explosive drama, the battle for digital control of American life is now proceeding quietly, by soft degrees. The shock of 1/6 has morphed into a pretext for something still more consequential: a new phase of national crisis wherein corporations with strategic control over Americans’ communications enforce a creeping line of censorship against critics of the sitting regime. While online platforms claim only to be applying their terms of service in neutral fashion, those terms themselves stink of delegitimization. WASHINGTON — If America is dominated by car culture and the call of the open road, there is a big reason for that: Over the past 65 years, the United States has spent nearly $10 trillion in public funds on highways and roads and just one-quarter of that on subways, buses and passenger rail. WASHINGTON — As President Joe Biden preaches patience but acts with urgency, his vision of the powers of the Oval Office is quickly taking shape, modeled after Democratic predecessors who dramatically expanded the reach of government to confront generational crises. In a recent meeting with historians and in private conversations with advisers, Biden looked to the examples set by Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson as he aims to use the levers of executive authority to create opportunities and break down barriers. Unlike Roosevelt and Johnson, who enjoyed formidable Democratic majorities in Congress, Biden has had to operate with a no-margin-for-error edge in fiercely partisan Washington.CORRECTION*

Were he to tap the tip of his nose, say, that would indicate smug self-satisfaction: I know this, keep me in your eye. But he doesn't tap the tip. He doesn't, in fact, feel all-wise.
