Fully vaccinated people may travel, CDC says

Federal health officials gave the green light Friday for fully vaccinated people to resume travel as an estimated 100 million Americans have had at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine, and evidence mounts of the shots’ effectiveness. The long-awaited guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is welcome news for the growing number of vaccinated adults who want greater freedom to visit family members and take vacations for the first time in a year. It is also expected to help boost the travel and airline industries that have been seeking a relaxation of restrictions. Until Friday’s announcement

I had a conversation last night with a group of friends and obviously the subject of vaccinations came up. I was the only one in the group who hasn’t been vaccinated. One person said that she thought it was just very selfish of people to refuse the vaccine. I mentioned that she was safe, having had the vaccine, why did it matter what anyone else did or didn’t do. She said that others she came in contact didn’t know whether or not she had been vaccinated and that she still wore her mask so that those around her wouldn’t feel uncomfortable. She endorsed vaccine passports and said it would be such an easy thing to do, just show it on your phone when you needed to. I said that “they” could also just tattoo it on your arm. That ended the conversation. I was the only one who was actually vocal about this, but others were nodding in agreement. Why don’t more Americans speak up.

Aren't they worried that the same helpless, inept people who are unable to obtain a picture ID to vote, will not be able to go through the process of signing-up to get vaccinated, then show-up on time to the two appointments to receive both doses? Then they would have to obtain and keep track of their documentation that they were vaccinated. This is bound to have a systemic disproportionate impact on these people.

I wrote earlier about a disturbing CBS News tweet and article where they actively encouraged full-on, Democratic activism against the new Georgia election law, as well as other laws they considered to be similar. They got a lot of backlash for their naked partisanship, and it obviously hit home. They’ve since deleted the tweet, but we have it here. They also stealth edited the headline as well. It had been, “3 ways companies can help fight Georgia’s restrictive new voting law,” taking an active voice. It was then changed to “Activists are calling on big companies to challenge new voting laws. Here’s what they’re asking for.”

An update to last week’s post about case counts declining in the Lone Star state. Not only have cases continued to fall in Texas since then, the seven-day average is now the lowest it’s been since June 18, 2020 according to Worldometer. Yesterday the state was averaging just 3,263 daily confirmed infections. On March 10, the day Greg Abbott’s order lifting Texas’s mask mandate took effect, it was averaging 4,895. Average daily deaths are also the lowest they’ve been since November — and deaths lag cases by several weeks so they might well continue to fall throughout April. Is there a “vaccine effect” at work here? Well, sure, partly

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) issued a correction on a story that made some false claims about Georgia’s election law reform legislation. The newspaper made the mistake of printing Democrat talking points, specifically remarks made by President Biden, instead of the truth. AJC originally falsely reported that voting hours had been cut in the bill and failed to note that early voting days had been added for general elections while shortening the time for early voting in primary run-offs. The newspaper printed the correction at the end of a story on liberal filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry. Perry owns a large production company in the Atlanta area.

Republican lawmakers, including Senators Ted Cruz (Texas) and Mike Lee (Utah) have called for an end to Major League Baseball’s antitrust exemption after the league announced it would pull the 2021 All-Star Game out of Atlanta. The league’s decision came in response to a Georgia voting law that critics claim makes it more difficult for individuals, particularly black voters, to exercise their constitutional right to vote. However, proponents of the law deny accusations that it aims to suppress votes, pointing out that the legislation does not place new limits on voting hours and makes the state’s elections more secure without restricting voter access. It even expands weekend early voting.

More than 550,000 Americans have died in COVID-19-related deaths. So, of course, the coronavirus is undoubtedly a serious and life-threatening disease, at least for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. But people wildly overestimate the actual risks posed by COVID-19, according to several new polls that show the stunning extent to which the public has internalized alarmist misinformation. A YouGov survey out this week reveals that young people aged 18 to 24 are the subgroup most anxious about resuming normal social life — despite being by far the least at risk from COVID-19. Indeed, the death rate for members of this age group is approximately 0.006%

Here's the unwittingly revolting report from Axios: A new analysis of U.S. voters suggests — counterintuitively — that the coronavirus pandemic may have helped drive former President Donald Trump's surprising increase in support from Latinos last November. The big picture: By shifting Trump's rhetoric from immigration to fears around the economic impact of shutdowns, the virus gave conservative and low-information Latino voters a permission structure to back Trump even if they shunned him in 2016, according to preliminary findings by research firm Equis that were reviewed by Axios.

Writing at the Wall Street Journal this week, Nicole Saphier has a very simple message for the CDC. “Dr. Fauci, Tear Off These Masks.” This new spin on a famous speech by Ronald Reagan wasn’t some sort of April Fools joke. The author lays out a very cogent argument as to why we are already much closer to the point where there’s little to no benefit from vaccinated people wearing face masks than most health officials and politicians are willing to admit. Continuing to enforce these mandates at that point would be little more than bureaucratic oppression. And the target date for ending the mandates should be Memorial Day weekend.

WASHINGTON — As President Joe Biden preaches patience but acts with urgency, his vision of the powers of the Oval Office is quickly taking shape, modeled after Democratic predecessors who dramatically expanded the reach of government to confront generational crises. In a recent meeting with historians and in private conversations with advisers, Biden looked to the examples set by Presidents Franklin D. Unlike Roosevelt and Johnson, who enjoyed formidable Democratic majorities in Congress, Biden has had to operate with a no-margin-for-error edge in fiercely partisan Washington.CORRECTION*
